if you've been to el quijote a zillion times before to enjoy its inexpensive (and not half bad) lobster or pound their sangria, you will be in for a surprise. whether you take that surprise as pleasantly unexpected or dissapointingly depressing will depend on what kind of person you are. if you're the kind of person who hates to see a landmark restaurant (however unglamorous or 'hip' or 'seedy') re-invented as a 4-star exorbitantly priced 'scene' restaurant, you will likely be disappointed. i'm actually that kind of person, but i have to say, i kind of loved my dinner at el quijote. they've definitely reinvented everything about the joint. starting, especially, with the prices. yeah, it's not expensive even by nyc standards. they changed the space - it's probably about a quarter the size of the previous el quijote. which is fine, as the old space felt cavernous and a bit lonely. mind you, this means you will no longer be able to have conversation with your tablemates at any kind of normal volume. the space now feels comparative cramped, crowded and LOUD. so.... why am i giving it 4 out 5 starts? the food is simply fantastic. this isn't just an improvement on the somewhat pedestrian food the previous kitchen offered. it's a redefinition of what a small hi-end spanish-influenced restaurant can be. just totally flavorful, perfectly prepared and presented. the service is also surprisingly attentive and helpful, especially in light of the fact that this is suddeny a somewhat small, hectic, hipster scene now. no hiccups, all smiles. the space also has been redone, in a somewhat expected design-heavy way. though they've been smart to re-include some of the older wall tapestries, frescos and knick knackery into the redo. yes, it's very loud, and overfilled with beautiful young model-type party-scene lifeforms wearing lanvin and palm angels, so if that kind of situation strikes you as repulsive rather than fun and mildly exciting, it's probably not for you. but the restaurant serves some pretty amazing food, priced appropriately (for once). in fact, the entire hotel renovation had nyc up in arms for a sec, but they really seem to have taken great care with it, including this restaurant and its management. i'll be back.
