I finally got a chance to swing by and try this staple.
What holds me back is the hours as they are mostly visitor/tourist hours and not working hour friendly. We made reservations but came a little early and were accommodated. One thing I would say is service is a little slow. We sat at the bar while waiting and the bartender served another couple before us which set the mood a little off but they made up for it. The waitress also moved a little slow so have a little patience when visiting. The food was really good and honestly what we came for anyway. Everything was fresh and made with love. I'd I get a chance to visit again I surely would.

Excellent service and food wish I had taken photos of the delicious meal my family enjoyed. First time visiting will be back!

Amazing service from genuinely great people who love what they do. Food so delicious you'll be dreaming about it for the rest of your life.

I would give the place 5 stars if it wasn't for the bartender with an attitude and I did not receive the complimentary bread. The place was nice, food and service was excellent. We had the gumbo, fried chicken meal with Mac & Chicken Creole which included jambalaya and shrimp. The bread pudding is one of the best I've had in NOLA and felt light. The rum punch was way too sweet but nice drink if you like sweet drinks.

Be the first to ReplyVisiting Dooky Chase's Restaurant has been on my bucket
Visiting Dooky Chase's Restaurant has been on my bucket list since I was 13 years old and watched the Princess and the Frog for the first time. I'm 27, finally made it to NOLA, and made it my mission to dine here. My experience was nothing short of what I'd imagine. It was absolutely brilliant. I made reservations for my husband and I two weeks in advance, which I'd recommend. We visited for brunch on a Sunday and I don't think we'd had gotten a seat if we didn't have reserved tabled. Not without a lengthy wait. The entrance and waiting area showcases the restaurant's rich history, the walls adorned with news paper articles, awards, and photos of celebrities and politicians dining with the owners. Even if you have to wait for your seat, you'll find it's easy to be distracted with all the portraits and readings available. We were greeted by our very friendly server who brought us crispy, buttery, golden garlic bread. I ordered the famous Red Beans and Rice ($14.95) that came with 2 pieces of fried chicken and paired that with the recommend wine, the La Crema Pinot Nior. The pairing was excellent, and my main dish was heavenly, the blend of spices a magical delight. There was just the right amount of sausage and rice. The fried chicken was fantastic! Beautifully crunchy and full of flavor - I could have easily eaten twice the amount I was served. My husband ordered the Shrimp Clemeneau (shrimp sautéed with garlic sauce, peas, mushrooms, and brabant potatoes, $18.95). If you like butter and garlic, this is the dish for you. While we both found it a little overwhelming, especially towards the bottom of the dish which is drowned in the sauce, everything above was delicious. Wonderful flavor and a very unique blend of seasoning. There potatoes were roasted perfectly and the shrimp was delightful. Of course, we couldn't leave without trying some sides and dessert, especially since we'd travelled from so far. We tried a cup of Creole Gumbo ($7.95) that we both LOVED. By far, the best gumbo we ate during our entire stay in NOLA. The Stewed Okra and Jambalaya ($4.95) were equally as delicious. We ordered both dessert options, Praline Bread Pudding and Peach Cobbler. I honestly couldn't pick which I favored as both were out of this world! I highly recommend ordering both! A couple tidbits/recommendations: Please make reservations, especially if you're visiting on a Sunday. Also, the restaurant is not in the French Quarter, or anywhere touristy. We chose to take an Uber from our hotel. You can also take the bus if you have the time and/or understand the bus routes. There is a dress code which can be found on the restaurants website. It's also plastered on the host station. I will 100% be returning to Dooky Chase's if I'm ever in the city again.

Came here while visiting New Orleans with some friends and had to try this spot after hearing many great things about it... and it did not disappoint! Got a lunch reservation at 2pm on a Saturday -- highly recommend getting a reservation as it gets very very busy. We arrived early but were told that we would get seated right at our reservation time. Service was great, however, we did have to wait over 45 minutes for our food to arrive, which is probably the longest I've ever waited. Luckily the food was absolutely worth it! Got the signature fried chicken which came with three pieces of their creole seasoned chicken and a side of mac and cheese. Accompanying the chicken was a very small side of pickled kale salad which complimented the richness of the fried chicken and mac and cheese. Everything was absolutely delicious... the fried chicken was outstanding! Perfectly seasoned, juicy and crunchy. I also got the Madisonville Mary (aka their version of a Bloody Mary) which was fairly spicy and quite delicious! Definitely made waiting for my food a bit easier. Delightful experience, despite the long wait time. Highly recommend a try if you're in New Orleans!
Be the first to ReplyMy wife and I recently dined here.
We both enjoyed our meal. I had the red beans and rice which came with two pieces of fried chicken. The chicken was excellent. My wife, a New Orleans native, said the bread pudding was the best she's ever had.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely amazing food and history.
This exemplifies home cooking. PLEASE make sure you have the gumbo and fried catfish. You will NOT be disappointed!!!
Be the first to ReplySadly Chef Leah Chase died in 2019 at the age of 96.
The lunch buffet here has always been amazing as it let you sample items such as the fried chicken, shrimp creole, jambalaya, red beans, mac 'n cheese, green beans, and dessert. The famous gumbo z'herbes is a dish that is usually just served once a year and that is a crowded and popular day at this venue that can be an interesting experience if you can get in. It was always a treat when Leah Chase was in the house as she usually made a point to come out and say a few words to folks so her absence is certainly notable these days.My video review of Dooky Chase's Restaurant is here:<a href="/redir?url=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%2F5izv0pZ00Vc&s=4b1d811903d26e2cd07d19337c6c980be9d82addefdf283676d19b6935773c28" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">youtu.be/5izv0pZ00Vc</a>
Be the first to ReplyI've been wanting to visit Dooky Chase a few years now.
My complete love to New Orleans' Queen Mrs Leah. I wanted to meet her as she's an inspiration, but unfortunately I wasn't able to make it on time. I did buy her cookbook and will be trying her recipes. Thank you so much to Cleo, your Fried Chicken is the best I've ever had. My trip from California to New Orleans was well worth it. A very big thank you to Keyshawn for taking care of us. We appreciate your recommendations and for giving our compliments to the Chefs. Thank you also to the gentlemen that brought our delicious drinks and kept our water glasses filled. The atmosphere is very bright and warm. The music was right on point. After your meal be sure to take pictures of the beautiful art. Save room for dessert or take it to go. When called to reserve I did ask if meals were served buffet style and was informed they don't anymore. After this pandemic I understand, so we'll be back for more. Thank you Chase Family.
Be the first to ReplyI've been to Dooky Chase's a few times over the years, but
I've been to Dooky Chase's a few times over the years, but wanted to do a PSA more than a review. The recipes for all the dishes come from the late Leah Chase and are executed perfectly by Chases. I am fond of the fried chicken, which is one of the best recipes in the city. Loved the creole gumbo. Surrounded by art and photographs from over the years, sitting in a maroon and cream styled dining room, it feels like settling down in a living room. That's the feeling Miss Leah wanted to express. She wanted patrons to have something a bit better than the norm. Service is excellent. Miss Stella checked on me to make sure I had been taken care of, and I'm not special! If you are new to the city, I encourage you to go to Dooky Chase's for a great dining experience. Their website is <a href="/redir?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dookychaserestaurants.com&s=99f1b94526132f8ce9062ea1fdc11eb52af27d13d4f1cfe0c968dcf0e1ce6396" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">dookychaserestaurants.com</a>. Here's where the PSA comes in:Dooky's doesn't serve breakfast or brunch. It's closed on Sundays and Mondays. Only serves dinner on Friday and Sat nights - lunch the rest of the weekdays. The restaurant website mentions making reservations twice for a reason. When I went to lunch today (with a reservation!), there was a tour bus near the place. They had two parties in private rooms and the dining room full to capacity. It was towards the end of the day when I had lunch and, from where I sat, I saw people arriving and acting up because they didn't have a reservation, but expected to be squeezed in. If there were adult high chairs with food trays, maybe! One guy got snotty with the hostess, which was uncalled for. Have manners in place, or rent them, before arrival. Don't be a Karen or a Dick.About the dress code, which is business casual. Don't arrive in jeans that are torn up to where they look like they were shredded by zombies. Doesn't matter if it's lunch or dinner, please care about what you wear. I met Miss Leah at the restaurant the day after Mr Dooky passed in 2016. She was cooking at the restaurant because she said she couldn't stay home. Cooking was her business, but people were her passion. Supporting local artists. Bearing culture and civil rights. And firmly believing solutions and commonality could be found over a bowl of gumbo. You need to experience her bowl of gumbo and how what she created is sustained.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place! True New Orleans food and people.
They have the best gumbo and fried oysters.
Be the first to ReplyJust landed in NOLA.
After a brief hotel tour, I headed right to DC's. It had been about 30 years since my last visit; so long ago that I met the Mrs. Leah Chase (former owner of Dooky Chase). Well, I must say I had the most delicious experience. The actual restaurant is on the historical walk. As you approach the front door, there are cement rectangles with names of prestigious folks who have dined at the establishment. Quite impressive! I digress, let's get to it! I started with the Lavender Lemonade. It did include a splash of vodka and elderberry syrup but besides that, the drink was a beautiful lavender color and the lemonade was fragrant, fruity, slightly sweet and smooth going down. Onto my meal. I ordered the Red Beans and Rice which came with two pieces of fried chicken. It came with a side - I selected green beans and paid a little extra for sweet potatoes. Honey! Let me tell you. That may have seemed like a super simple meal but it was so good!!!! The red beans and rice was creamy and so flavorful, right out of the pot goodness. The fried chicken ooh wee! Seasoned well, crispy and crunch and fried to perfection. String beans were so go even a child would LOVE them and the sweet potatoes were better than you'd want them on a Thanksgiving day! The meal was capped with the bread pudding. I'm not a big bread pudding fan so was decent but slightly mushy from the sweet sauce. Service was good but a little slow. They were busy and I totally understood why. Great way to spend an afternoon!
Be the first to ReplyFood is Amazing the Lavender cocktail is sooooooo amazing.
The wait time is not favorable but it's very popular. I for sure will be back.
Be the first to ReplyThis was the worst experience I've had a anyRestaurant in
This was the worst experience I've had a anyRestaurant in years. BEWARE: Do NOT order food here if you are not sure that you will like it because they will NOT take it back and they will not remove it off your bill. My MIL had to argue management down about the crab stuffed shrimp that she had only taken ONE bite out of. To be told that the chef did a quality check, but the two individuals who ordered the dish had only took one bite each was insulting.Apparently per there policy (that does NOT appear on any ANY surface or menu) they do not take any food back to the kitchen and will NOT remove it from your bill. The attitude we received from Tracey(the manager) was terrible.
Be the first to ReplyI was visiting my Tulane student daughter, and she picked
I was visiting my Tulane student daughter, and she picked this place and made a reservation for us to dine during my visit. Neither of us had been there before, so we were excited to try it, but unfortunately, we were left disappointed. First, the good points - the dining room is attractive, the atmosphere pleasant, and the service outstanding. Where the restaurant fell short was the food. My daughter ordered the chicken creole on recommendation of our server, and although the sauce had good flavor, the chicken did not taste fresh (tasted like frozen breasts were used), and both the chicken and shrimp were overcooked. I wasn't very hungry and wanted to save room for dessert, so I ordered the BBQ shrimp as my entrée. The flavor of the sauce was on point with a nice little kick, but the shrimp was, again, overcooked. I confess to being picky with the correct temperature/doneness of proteins, and it is key to food/restaurant being okay/good versus great/excellent. We got the peach cobbler for dessert. It was just okay. The key to good cobbler is using fresh fruit and crispy, warm buttery crust, neither of which appeared in our cobbler. We're glad we got to try this historic restaurant in which the likes of Obama have dined and to check it off our list of must eat places in NOLA, but we won't be coming back.
Be the first to ReplyA institution in New Orleans since 1941.
It's a very nice and historic restaurant with lots of history including visits from US presidents and other big name folks and stars. It has classy interiors and the servers are very polite and well groomed in their button up shirts and ties. I felt bad I came in t shirt and shorts and should have been more well dressed. The gumbo was light and thin and bursting w/ flavor and the soup was not heavy like a lot of places that serve gumbo. The fried chicken was cooked just right but I personally prefer Willie Mae's down the block! What you are really here to eat is their " Shrimp Clemenceau" that had shrimps, potatoes and full of garlic flavor! The oil and sauce all over the shrimp! So delicious! I would go back to just eat this again!
Be the first to ReplyThe ambiance of this great place is amazing I would return
The ambiance of this great place is amazing I would return just to look at the art work again. The fried chicken was heaven sent. The French green beans were pretty good but the rest was ok nothing too spectacular and that was rather disappointing because it seem so flavorful when I watched a pbs special about the place. My server terry was wonderful. If you go ask for him. They are rather strict about the dress code so make sure you are covered up when you go here.
Be the first to ReplyDooky Chase's is one of the restaurants I was most excited
Dooky Chase's is one of the restaurants I was most excited to visit in New Orleans and I'm happy to say that it did not disappoint. We did not have a reservation, so my husband and I made sure to be standing outside in line by 10:50am on a Friday morning. When they opened at 11am, we were seated right away. The dress code (as noted on the website) is enforced. The server politely asked my husband to remove his bulls cap, though she joked that he might have gotten away with it had he been wearing a pelicans cap. Onto the food, I started with an excellent bowl of gumbo that was on the right side of the line between flavorful and too salty. My entree was a classic, fried chicken with macaroni and cheese, and it was delicious. I only ate half my entree because I wanted to try their bread pudding. That was a good call, I loved it!My husband had the stewed chicken, which was also very tasty. Maybe getting there early is key, because we enjoyed great food and great service at Dooky Chase's.
Be the first to ReplyWe go to New Orleans several times a year.
This was our first time going to Dooky Chase and we loved it. We got the Red Beans and Rice with fried chicken and chicken creole. The fried chicken was amazing. Also, got peach cobbler and bread pudding to go. The service was good. We went for lunch and they were really busy. You will need a reservation. We will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyI visit NOLA every year.
I've attempted to eat here 2 years in a row. However, while their website encourages you to call to make a reservation in advance, every time I tried calling to make a reservation weeks before my arrival, the phone goes unanswered and their voicemail box doesn't allow you to leave a message. On the couple of occasions someone actually answered the phone, they hung up when I asked to make a reservation. I'll take my business elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyAfter reading a recent article about the history of Dooky
After reading a recent article about the history of Dooky Chase in atlas obscura, I was excited to experience it myself! I was in New Orleans for a friends bachelor party, and it seemed like the perfect opportunity. We made a reservation a couple weeks out given the size of our party, and couldn't have been treated better. Upon arrival, the wait staff went out of their way to make sure we had a fabulous dinner and took the time to answer all of our various questions. Near the end of the evening, the current owner even came by and greeted us and posed for a picture! Lastly, the food was absolutely incredible. We had several different appetizers for the table and each one had its own flavor and story to tell. Thanks for a phenomenal dinner and for making our experience a memorable one! Looking forward to a follow up visit one day
Be the first to ReplyOk I'm here in New Orleans at Dooky Chase a local
Ok I'm here in New Orleans at Dooky Chase a local neighborhood restaurant. It is quite obvious the local community uses this place for celebrations and community wins for good reason. Though I was recommended this place from others, I can say I was not disappointed. The shrimp creole was simply delicious and the fried chicken was cooked perfect. I also manage room to eat the peach cobbler that taste like no other, I mean my tongue melted at first bite. I love this place and what it represents
