It's an LA institution, and was definitely a fun experience. We had a reservation, and were seated on the patio within a few minutes of arrival. The patio is cute and to the side of the restaurant, but you miss a little bit of the traditional ambiance of the restaurant. I did not request patio seating, but was fine with it given there were heaters, and the night wasn't too cold. Almost immediately after being seated, we were given water and a bread basket. There's a wine list and a full bar, but no cocktail menu, so I started with an Aperol Spritz. We each got a salad -- I ordered the Caesar and my partner ordered the Caprese. The Caesar was more dressed than not--which I liked--but it had very few croutons for the amount of salad. The Caprese was fresh and had a good dressing, which we mopped up with some of the bread. The Caesar is pretty large, so it's a little frustrating that there's a $5 split charge had we tried to split it. I wish they'd just offer a smaller and cheaper portion if they are trying to discourage the sharing of appetizers. There is also a $10 split charge for dinner entrées, but that wasn't a problem since we always planned to order separate entrées. I got the signature and much hyped Chicken Parmesan, while my partner got the Veal Piccata. The waiter kindly double checked that he was okay with capers on the piccata. Both came with a side of spaghetti with a choice of sauce--meat, marinara, or olive oil. I chose the marinara and was happy with it, while my partner chose the meat sauce. The Chicken Parmesan was very cheesy and tasty, and the Veal Piccata had a good lemon flavor. I don't know if either was the best I'd ever had, but both were solid meals. Both of us finished the sides of pasta, and took home portions of each entrée. For dessert, we split the traditional Cheesecake, which was excellent. Overall, the meal was solid and service was excellent from start to finish. We never lacked on water refills, our waiter checked on us repeatedly, and the food arrived quickly and piping hot. I have heard that there can be a wait on busier nights, even with a reservation, so it may have helped that we went on a Monday of a holiday weekend.
