Cotogna San Francisco Reviews
Came here with sky high expectations based on how hard it
Came here with sky high expectations based on how hard it was to get a reservation. I think maybe I hyped to it up too much, but ultimately it was a great meal. Partly my fault for not asking the waiter what certain appetizers were. But I wasn't a huge fan of the consistency and color of the eggplant appetizer. It's a dark green eggplant flan, and it really threw me off. However, the pasta (as expected) was the star of the show. I love agnolotti del plin, and always order it whenever it's in a menu. I'd say their agnolotti is second best--only after Scarpetta in Vegas and NYC. Girlfriend's lamb sugo was unbelievable--prob the best bite that I had. We were still hungry and got the carbonara pizza. It was very tasty, but not something super special that I haven't had before. We were too full to grab dessert, but none of the options really appealed to us. All in all, a great meal, but not worth waiting a month to get a reservation. That said, the meal was fairly inexpensive compared to other dining in SF. 4/5

Visited Cotogna, which is the more casual sister restaurant to Quince next door. Absolutely loved my experience there! We learned that the meal production starts around 3:30am each day, when the produce is freshly picked from their farm which is about 1 1/2 hours outside of SF. Early each morning the ingredients for the day are delivered to the restaurant and the meal preparation begins. Can't get fresher than that!! The pastas are all handmade and the menu changes for every meal. Standouts for me were the raviolo and the corn triangoli (normally the corn would be done for the summer but because of the weather this year, the dish was available for an extra two weeks)! Another favorite was the eggplant and pecorino sformato, which is basically a savory flan and is amazing and unique! For dessert we tried the strawberry meringata, which was delicate and refreshing. Both the service and the food were impeccable and I can't say enough nice things about this restaurant!
Service was friendly, efficient and professional.
We brought our own wines from our private collection (#HowellMountainVineyard Cab Franc- delish!). Wine service seemed a bit off, not quite the engaging personality one would expect. The tasting pour upon opening a bottle was closer to a full pour. They did a nice job recognizing the birthday celebration. The restaurant had a comfortable & casual neighborhood vibe. All the dishes were generally good. A couple of the lamb dishes were a tad too salty. The summer special corn ravioli was a major hit. The eggplant mouse appetizer was a surprise for those who normally did not like eggplant but actually liked the dish. That's quite a compliment to the chef's skills. Overall it was a good meal but nothing spectacular. While we were not expecting Michelin level food nor service, our expectations were high given all the hype and the difficulty to get reservations.

Really enjoy the decor and ambiance here, and the food is generally solid with plenty of delicious pasta dishes. That said, my last two visits didn't feel quite as impressive as my first one. Wondering if the overall experience justifies both the cost and the effort of getting a reservation. Still, judging by how busy it always is, many people clearly feel it's worth it.
The raviolio and corn triangoli were the most insane things
The raviolio and corn triangoli were the most insane things I've ever experienced. I'm the kind of person that didn't believe in paying a lot of money for pasta but this place definitely proved me wrong. The service was nice and got our stuff in a reasonable time considering how busy this place gets. I get the hype and I would recommend you try it out too. On side note though, I would skip on the burrata as it's way expensive for what you get and there's nothing special about it

For some reason this place was locked for reviews for a while, but what I remember about this place was that it's super hyped....and surprisingly it met expectations. Hard to kind of book, but everything here was pretty good.

Came here to celebrate a birthday and boy was it hard to snag a reservation! We ended up getting one of the last remaining ones of the night and were seated outside. The waiters were kind enough to set us up with a space heater and warm blankets to fight to cold SF wind. We ordered the seasonal corn pasta and a pizza to share. The pasta was delicious, but portions were conservative. The pizza was out of this world amazing. May be an uncommon opinion, but I would highly recommend the pizza, maybe even more than the pasta. Our waiter was very kind and attentive, and we were able to share a complimentary scoop of ice cream at the end of the night
Happy to finally be able to confirm for myself - Cotogna
Happy to finally be able to confirm for myself - Cotogna absolutely lives up to the hype! I came for lunch on a Friday with pasta in mind. We ordered the corn triangoli, the famous raviolo, and the agnolotti del plin. I truly had the most delicious time. The triangoli is a dream - the creamy center, the smooth sauce, and the pasta cooked to a perfect al dente. I would eat this forever if I could. The agnolotti was so yummy - tons of flavor packed into a small little pouch. The real showstopper was the raviolo - it's somehow incredibly rich without being too heavy. The way the yolk blends with the brown butter sauce? Insane. We finished off our meal with the Shakerato gelato, which we basically inhaled. You will absolutely find me at that gelato cart trying every flavor. Our server also let us know they're opening a gelateria down the street some time soon! The service was amazing, everyone was friendly and happy to answer any questions we had. I will be snagging the first res I see and will be back to try more!
My partner and I reserved for Cotogna almost a month before
My partner and I reserved for Cotogna almost a month before to ensure we had a seat to celebrate his birthday. It was nice that our place mat shad a personalized Happy Birthday on it, they also gave us another at the end of our meal! Service was really nice and attentive. They came by pretty often to check if we needed any help and explained dishes, also ensured that none of us had allergies. What we ordered: - GL Coletti Chardonnay 22: This was so crisp, light, and refreshing! The Chardonnay complemented most of our dishes so well! - Cucumber Salad: This was pretty refreshing and relatively simple. Cucumbers, tomato, and feta cheese. The cucumbers were slightly pickled so it helped give some flavor. - Raviolo di Ricotta: Dare I say... the best ravioli I've had in awhile! The ravioli was super flavorful, creamy, and cheesy. The egg yolk in the middle gives a lot of texture and creaminess to it too. Definitely a fun dish to try! - Paine Farm Squab: The waiter let us know that the Squab they serve was locally sourced. Some pieces were gamey (which was prefaced before ordering) and some were juicy. I enjoyed the peas that came with it! - Pappardelle with Rabbit: This was rabbit ragu with morel mushrooms. This was pretty flavorful paired with the olives. - Jenn's Vanilla & Honeycomb: So creamy and light! I enjoyed every bite of the gelato, lots of honeycomb infused into the ice cream as well. The server did mention that they change the menu relatively often so most dishes might not be available depending on the time you visit!
I stopped by Cotogna for the Gelato cart.
Jennifer Felton is the executive pastry chef, and formulates the gelato flavors. The cart operates Thursday-Saturday from noon to 4:30. Here are the flavors I sampled: 4.5: Vanilla & honeycomb: Great flavor, but it was too sweet. 4.4: Dark chocolate & toasted almond: The chocolate flavor is good, but the nuts don't work as a mix-in. 4.2: Shakerado with coffee brittle: Good mild coffee flavor, but it had coarse ground coffee bits that did not work. 3.0: Aprium (apricot/plum): This flavor didn't work. It was like unripe apricot. Scoops are $8 each, plus a 6% menu surcharge. so it's really $8.50/scoop. For gelato geeks: She uses a more advanced gelato formation with dextrose and glucose syrup powder.
Cotogna in San Francisco: A Delightful Find!
This past Friday, my eldest son and I were in the Bay Area for an awards program at UC Berkeley. Not wanting to miss an opportunity to enjoy downtown San Francisco we spent all day Saturday sightseeing and eating -- plus dropping in on William Stout Architectural Books. After my purchases, I asked the clerk if the restaurant at the corner was "good". EVERYONE IN THE BOOK STORE, maybe 10 to 12 patrons, gestured with a two thumbs up or a soft "yes". Incredible! COTOGNA is a superb restaurant -- it rivals Sazon in Sant Fe. Mid-afternoon the place was packed, and not wanting to wait, we sat at the counter and had an awesome view of sous-chefs, a pizza oven, and the grille. I video taped the ambiance to share with my wife and daughter-in-law...now I'm obligated to bring them this summer. THE CUISINE: Every meal sounded divine, so we shared our selections. We feasted on Fogline Farm Chicken which was savory with a touch of "levitation" and Marinara pomodoro that must have been flown in from Sicily. We started off with their Carrot Sfomato out of curiosity -- the antipasti did not disappoint!! Cotogna is a delightful find, a fun and casual place, and the service and personnel were the best.
Trendy but Hardly Terriific.
We had dinner here with another couple. Noise level made it impossible to have a conversation. As well, rhere were no double doors, so our table, which was close to the door, was subject to cold winds all night as people were coming and going. Service was decent, food was okay, pasta portions were small, and overall it was an average experience. It should be better for the prices.
Tasty but too expensive
Good & friendly service, upbeat environment inside. We arrived on time however our reserved inside table was going to be at least 25 minutes to wait for which we didnβt appreciate So made alternate seating arrangements Pasta is delicious but portion size truly minuscule. Cauliflower custard was meal highlight & really beautiful. The entrΓ©es (sea bream and osso bucco) were tasty but again portion size too small. $175 per person out the door for 2 drinks, 1 app, 1/2 pasta and 1 entree each is overly expensive even for SF. The restaurant is a SF institution and very glad that itβs thriving but donβt need to return anytime soon. If we do, itβll be for lunch pizzas.
One of my favorites for Italian in SF!
One of my favorites for Italian in SF. SOOOO sad to see it closed M-Thursday for lunch!! Can get a bit loud in there at times though or maybe im just getting older!!!
Great solo trip
The staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. Partially a tall gentleman with tattoos that was behind the bar on the evening of 14th June 2023.
Good food and service
The food, ambiance and service was excellent. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. We reserved the outdoor seating - very comfortable with heat lamps. The portions are small but the food is delicious. We shared the butternut squash tortelli, the Raviolo di Ricotta and the rock cod fish. The fish was a little dry. The Marsala panna cotta dessert was good. Overall a wonderful afternoon.
One of my all time favourite restaurants
We happened upon this restaurant as we were walking around the neighbourhood. We were visiting from Canada and this was the end of our trip. They were completely booked up but told us to come back in 30 minutes and they could accommodate us at the bar. We are so happy we waited. It was worth it. The service was exceptional and the food was amazing. We just loved the atmosphere and vibe of this place. I wouldnβt hesitate to come back here. One of our all time favourites in all of our travels. Truly a GEM!
Donβt Miss Cotogna!
Dinner and Service Exceptional! Great ambience whether you are sitting at the bar watching the chefs /bartenders or at tables. The patio area is creatively designed which adds to the atmosphere. Blankets and heaters provided. The staff make each customer feel special and welcome!
Superb lunch at Cotogna
I had a superb lunch at Cotogna in San Francisco. The menu was very interesting and I would have liked to try multiple options but eventually settled on a blue fin tuna starter and black cod main. Both proved to be excellent choices. The wine list was relatively short but very good. Service was very friendly, informative and helpful. Would highly recommend. The best Italian restaurant Iβve visited!
Sadly uncommon example of what can be achieved when a restaurant owner cares.
A rare bird.. I've been going there since it opened. It's incredibly difficult to run a restaurant, especially one that you can are proud of, one that feeds your own soul, not just your customers. Because of this, Cotogna attracts and retains the best, most motivated employees because they too hold themselves to the same exacting standards and seek more than a paycheck from their working lives. Not cheap, but not pretentious, fussy, and overpriced like the hundreds of mediocre show-off places you'll find in big cities around the world.
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal! Probably in our top 10 SF
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal! Probably in our top 10 SF restaurants. the butter corn pasta is a MUST. Initially we were skeptical, but it's almost like a dessert pasta -- sweet but not too sweet. I really enjoyed the blue fin crudo and Arancini as well. Service could have been a little faster but they were very attentive overall. We sat outside and it was a beautiful day but they also provide blankets and individual heaters above each table.
Hands down one of the best places to go to for Italian food.
The service makes you feel like you are some high VP person. Waiters are so nice, come and explain everything to you as they are bringing it out. We were vegetarians as well, and when we were ordering a dessert we didn't realize that the top layer would be made of beef. The waiters remembered we were vegetarians and told us to not order it. It's simple things like that. Inside seating is amazing, but outside is also really nice. Their choices of vegetarian pasta and pizza are absolutely delicious. I usually don't like corn dishes, and squash either. But it was absolutely delicious. I was surprised at how good the food was here!! Highly recommend.

My pasta wasn't what I expected & to my surprise the manager and the bartender went above and beyond to value what I had to say and make the situation right . Customer service is sometimes lacking and I have to say everyone here is so kind . I also was introduced to earthy meat like mushrooms here that were truly chefs kiss .. I would love to try the squash blossom pizza so I will definitely be back ! Service 10 out of 10 !!! Thanks
A friend selected this location the evening before we went.
She was able to secure a reservation (CC required) for 8pm on a Saturday night for outdoor seating. The restaurant is located along the edge of the financial district and north beach. I was able to find street parking right away. We are early and they were able to seat us right away. All the outdoor seating has heaters, plus they had throws if needed. They were needed. It's SF - factor on the micro climates! The FOOD and STAFF were amazing. The staff was well versed on the menu and the background of the dishes (the village where the cheese is from, the flour with pollen something and fennel something) - my friend and I were eager to experience the food lore of the foreign Italian locations! As we were seated outside it was not all that noisy (not much traffic on Saturday). It seemed a little noisier inside. The inside space was lovely and lively. The food was tasty, arrived well paced. The staff was impressively on top of clearing the table, changing dishes etc. A lot of great options on the menu. Everything we ate was delicious.
I wish I could give more than 5 stars.
This place is incredible. Food was out of this world, and the service could not have been more amazing. I went for my anniversary with my boyfriend and they even printed us placemats saying happy anniversary with our names on it. I cannot wait for the day I get to go back. I salivate just thinking about this place. One of my favorite restaurants in the city by far. The outdoor seating was so cute (that's where I sat). They had heaters and blankets and beautiful furniture. I just love this place.

was so excited about finally trying cotogna! everything was absolutely delicious and surprisingly light for italian food! my favourite dishes were the corn pasta and the arancini, and the salad was also surprisingly delicious
Very high quality Italian food.
Not cheap, but a great option if you're looking for a special night out. Service was very good, and all the food we tried was amazing. We especially liked their selection of homemade pastas. This place also has some of the nicest parklets in the city, so don't be afraid to sit outside even in cold nights. Definitely get a reservation, as it's very popular. You'll likely need to book well in advance.

07/04/24 - summer season Noting when we came because they serve up new dishes as the days change The filling of the corn triangole (literally) is a creamy potage that could warm your tummy on a cold (northern Italian?) day and certainly warmed our spirits on this day of brilliant American independence Also if you think about it, you rarely find corn as the featured ingredient on an entree and this was the highlight of our 4 dishes. As someone who's never had cooked fig before, it was simply a delight to try the tart n sweet balsamic vinegar glaze on the fig and perfectly roasted onion app And our second pasta, the rabbit pappardelle, was not a heavy entre even with the meat and sauce. A light and hearty end to the main course. Torta croccante was a delectable ferroro rocher cake on a plate with hazelnut ice cream. Yum. Bit rich though so could've done with bit of fruit or another acid to break that down Ryan, our server + bartender extraordinaire, was thoughtful, knowledgeable about kitchen practices, the dishes, and their supply chain even just a few weeks into the job. Also complimented me on my fig app strategy to pair with the entrees ;) With an elevated dining experience in an upscale part of SF, Cotogna could be your next date night spot if you like farm fresh and inventive Italian. Would recommend and come again

This place has been on my list for a while and it didn't disappoint! Top notch service, fresh and local ingredients, warm & inviting ambiance. Perfect spot for a client dinner / impressing guests!
Great anniversary dinner.
Was dressed very causal after a day of sight seeing and greeted and treated like a million bucks. Sommelier was spot on with recommendation and wine service. Dining room was warm and lively but not loud.
One of the harder tables to get
Two notches below Vetri Cucina @ Philly, yet itβs the golden boy on the block. Says everything about SF food scene. (Food wise)
Make a reservation well in advance!
My second visit did not disappoint. Went early and sat at the bar. Amazing pasta. Great wine list. Cozy atmosphere and ample outdoor seating. Walking distance from Embarcadero area.

I visited this place for lunch on Monday, and I must say, it was beyond my expectations. The place is packed, but the food is fantastic. Their pizzas are a must try. It's a fun and vibrant place to be. I am planning to go there for dinner next time.

Walked in on a sunny Saturday afternoon at around 4pm and was able to get seated immediately inside (iykyk how hard it is to get a rez at Cotogna) The restaurant was still pretty busy and full, but the staff and sommelier did a great job introducing the menu, and recommended a crisp Chardonnay that we loved! The food was great but not make a reservation 1-2 months in advance amazing, and it's pricey. My favorites were the Sunchoke cappelletti - the sunchoke chips adds a great texture on the luscious cream and filling, and I appreciated how they used the sunchoke in different ways in the dish. Unique and worth trying! The pork chops were juicy and tender, I always like to order pork at restaurants because it's quite difficult to be made well at home and this delivered! The other two pasta dishes were good but nothing special imo. The ambiance of this place was so lively, great for a get together or dates. I would recommend trying Cotogna if you get a chance! (But I personally wouldn't go through the trouble of making a rez here)
This place was decently priced for what you get!!
This place was decently priced for what you get!! Personally I still like other Italian restaurants better but it was worth the visit. The Agnolotti was not my favorite. Basically no sauce it's just like the soup juice from the beef that's inside the mini raviolis. The mushroom tagliatelle was amazing - delicious creamy mushroom flavors. The vanilla with honeycomb pieces inside was also delicious. Outside seating was very cute and peaceful. Service was okay, we had 2 waiters but only the second one was knowledgeable.

Service: Our waiter was so sweet and patient with my 82 year old mother, whose birthday we were celebrating. He enthusiastically explained and re-explained to her the different types of pasta and dishes. She loved the extra touch of her placemat noting her birthday (she made sure I took a photo of it for her ;) ) as well as the complementary scoop of gelato w/ a candle. Thank you for making it such a good and memorable experience for her. Food: Everything we ate was delicious from the raviolo, arancini, housemade focaccia we had as appetizers to the agnolotti (my husband is still talking about that!) and other pasta w/ ragu to the steak with a side of white beans and brussels sprouts. My favorite bite was having some of the steak with some of the olive oil mixture from the beans! Heaven! We have been to Florence/Italy quite a bit and ate a lot of incredible food there and this was one of the best Italian meals we have had. Parking: We came on a Saturday for lunch and was able to find street parking on Broadway after circling a bit. There are a few outdoor self-parking lots nearby for ~$20. Atmosphere: The atmosphere was just perfect. Casual, friendly, and welcoming. Couples, families with kids, etc. were all having a lovely time. Kudos to the whole staff.
I agree with so many.
The service and ambience was great. The food really misses the mark. Out of 4 dishes 3 were severely oversalted. The Chicken was so salty I could not eat it. The only dish of the 4 that actually tased good was the agnolotti which was perfectly cooked and had a beautiful reduction. Please take the salt away from the kitchen. It is way over the top. Thank you.
My very favorite restaurant in San Francisco.
Always fresh and innovative food. A must

Food: 4-5/5 Service: 5/5 Value: 4/5 Ambiance: Upper casual Been here twice as of this post. My first experience was better, but that seasonal menu better suited my taste. Quality is excellent, flavors are very thoughtful, but portions do leave you wanting more (at least in my opinion). Service is very professional and top notch. Waiters are extremely attentive. The outdoor seating has good decor, heaters and gives you an experience where you don't necessarily feel as if you are outdoor. Will continue to come again.

We had been trying to get a reservation here for a very long time but finally saw a table open up during the week and were beyond excited. I am pleased to report we had a great time. The service throughout the evening was very helpful but with the right amount of space. Staff were very knowledge in recommendations as well. The cocktails and wine across the board were also delicious. For food, we started with the Little Gem Hearts which was crisp, fresh and a very good start to the meal. For mains we ordered a Potato Gnocchi, a Raviolo and the Agnolotti. The pasta was super fresh, the sauces, fillings, and finishing touches were all delicious and made for a great bite every time! For dessert we tried the Bomboloni and the Olive Oil gelato which I highly recommend!! While we didn't get to try the pizza or focaccia, we're 100% going back!
Delicious food only surpassed by extraordinary service
Don't get me wrong, food is wonderful. 3 pasta dishes were superb; creative sauces and pastas that simply don't get any better. A Focaccia from a specific region in N. Italy, was a taste sensation. An Italian Chardonnay was beautifully balanced. Even so, the extraordinary service, exemplified by Alfredo, Mario & David, deserves special mention, a perfect combination of knowledge, friendliness and respect, such a hard trio to deliver, but delivered by all at Cotogna, so consider this a 5+ rating!
Great Meal
Great spot in Jackson Square area. Outdoor seating with heaters or indoors. Italian menu with very high quality food. Run by the same folks as Quince (Michelin 3 star). Server never brought my beer and despite saying she would bring parmesan never did.
Delicious!
We sampled several of the dishes and the meal was delicious. Spuntini: gnocco fritto with prosciutto, gorgonzola and pickled onion Antipasti: little gem salad with blue cheese, asian pear and walnut Pasta: sunchoke tortelli, agnolotti del pin, pappardelle Pizza: sopressata In addition to the great food, we loved the ambience. We were seated inside, but the outdoor seating also looked very cozy. Overall, I'd recommend for business dinners or date nights.
A mixed bag
This is a highly regarded restaurant that we were both pleased about and disappointed in. The service was exceptional - A+ - with knowledgeable and helpful staff throughout. The outside sitting area is one of the nicest of all the covid era outside dining areas. Tables are comfortable, at a distance from each other, there are lovely plantings and a nice barrier. Another A+. The food was a disappointment however: among the four of us only one had a truly exceptional dish - the radiatori -pork ragu. The quail and sea bream were fine but didn't live up to our expectations, nor did the spaghetti. Apple tart with gelato was delicious. A word of caution: the inside space was full and very very loud! If you're looking for a quiet evening sit outside. So, a mixed bag.
COTOGNA - SIMPLY THE BEST!
We absolutely love Cotogna. YES, we believe one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. From food to wine to service it is outstanding . But it is very difficult to get reservations - especially when we live in Utah and fly in with a short term plan of arrival. Dining at Cotogna is an amazing experience. If possible plan ahead.
Anniversary Lunch
We found this place because it was close to the hotel we stayed at. We enjoyed our walk over. Look at the menu was a little intimidating because we couldnβt pronounce any of them! But our server was super nice and extremely helpful when we asked questions. We took his suggestion with the ravioli & corn platesβ¦everything was perfect! It was great experience to have lunch here for our 8 yr anniversary
Date night in SF
It was good but not five star. I didnβt like the fact that our wine was kept away from table and were reliant on someone bringing the bottle to table. I also thought it was overpriced for what is essentially pasta dishes (more than twice what youβd pay in Italy). Food pretty tasty though and the restaurant ambience was excellent. Would I go back - at a push. I think other options for an Italian would have to be explored first.
Always a joy to eat here.
The food in incredible and the service and ambiance to match. Many many regulars here.
