The tasting menu is outstanding and worthy of its Michelin accolades. Every dish was precisely and elegantly crafted along with memorable flavor combinations. Definitely an excellent experience and one of the best restaurants in SF.

It's interesting because I see such a mixed bag of ratings/opinions from this place but, my experience was heavenly. From the inventive dishes to service, it was a top notch experience from start to finish. If you look at the photos that are attached to this review you'll easily spot the precision and skill that goes into the food. Simply put, it's beautiful. The asparagus, caviar, yuzu dish is still one of the more beautiful dishes I've ever eaten. Also, look at the turbot fish. The scales were made of root vegetables, it's stunning. Granted this price tag is quite hefty but, I thought it lived up to the expectations. The fare was light, bright and seafood driven. Perfect pairings for white wines, so bring some of your wine gems out of storage and pay the corkage if you want to save a few bucks on a wine pairing.

A DISAPPOINTED & UNPLEASANT DINING EXPERIENCEThe Setting:The tables in the dining room were completely bare without a table cloth or a center piece. We understand the place wanted to display the solid wooden table, however, it was a Valentine's Day weekend and it didn't even have any décor or at least a candle on the table. The room had the cold and empty feeling, not an ambience that we were looking for at a 2-Michelin Star restaurant, especially on such a high-profile weekend. The Service:From the beginning, as we were going through the wine list and before we even get the chance to order the wine, they instantly brought out the first course, the Grilled Seaweed Bread. It was two small pieces of toast, the side of a biscotti, served on a single small plate, not two separate plates. We were REALLY confused because normally the restaurant would bring out a palate cleanser for guest before starting their meals. We had to wait for the wine and by the time we touched the bread, it was already cold and dried.Secondly, when we're just finished the first course, they took the plate away and less than a few minutes, they right away brought out the second course. We felt really rush. It felt like the kitchen already made the dishes and the server automatically brought one out after another like robots, not giving the guests a chance to digest, relax and enjoy the evening. When it was time for the desert course, our server did not even ask if we would like any coffee or port, instead the desert was just brought out to us without any questions. Unbelievable! The Food:The main reason we chose COI because it listed as Californian-French cuisine restaurant. But it turned out all the dishes tasted like Asian Fusion or Mediterranean cuisine, we were shocked. There's nothing French about any of the dishes that were served that night. There's a strong Japanese influence on most of the dishes.Worse yet, our main course, Roasted Duck Crusted in Spices and Seeds, were cooked close to medium rare. We asked the server to bring it back to the kitchen and when it came out the second time, there was still blood dripping when we cut into it. My friend couldn't eat and skipped that main course. When we talked to the manager, John, at the end of the evening, he informed us that the dish is normally served rare. Yet, we were neither informed nor asked how we would like our duck to be cooked prior serving it.Overall, COI tops our list of disappointed dining experiences. The food was mediocre to basic, the ambience was cold and the service was not up to par. Never have we ever left a main course untouched at a restaurant, let alone at a Michelin-rated one, but we did at COI. For the price of $250/person, we felt cheated. COI to us is an imposter of fine dining and Michelin-rated venue. If you have not tried COI, please DON'T, it's not worth the time nor the money.

While interior is really cozy I can't say anything else too worthy of this place. Like some other Yelpers, I came for the Valentines dinner with neutral expectations (in my experience, 2 stars are always a hit or miss). We started off waiting over 40 minutes for someone to show the menu and then almost an hour for the first course to come out, and its just toast. I try not to complain about small portions/price for Michelin stars but food was really basic and kind of all of over the place -- really not up to par with their Rating or the price. We also found a crab shell in one of the courses but no remediation of that nor the long wait for service, just "oops sorry"If I knew before the dinner that Coi dropped a star, which is a HUGE red flag, then I would not have agreed to come here. There are plenty of worthy 1 stars in SF that beat this place any day.
Be the first to ReplyI don't think Coi deserves any Michelin star.
I was worried about it prior because they have been getting such low ratings lately on Yelp, but it was the only restaurant available for Valentine's Day. Food was ok. The portions were small and timing between each dish was long. Unlike other Michelin star restaurants, none of the dishes were creative/ aesthetically pleasing. All food tasted good, but not great. Service was ok. We decided to have wine by the glass and they just poured the wine without giving us a chance to taste. I think they should lose a star. In fact, I don't think they even deserve 1 star. I wouldn't pay 700+ for two people (including 20% gratuity, two glasses of wine) for the experience we had.
Be the first to ReplyCoi was the worst Michelin starred restaurant I've been to
Coi was the worst Michelin starred restaurant I've been to because of 1) taste 2) price 3) service was decent but not what I expect from a Michelin restaurant. Let's break it down. The taste was OKAY. This is a 2-Michelin star restaurant so I expect at the minimum some dishes to be mind blowing. Granted it was Valentines Day and they had a different menu. I felt like there weren't enough dishes to grant a $700+ meal for two. None of the dishes blew my mind. They were so so. The price was close to $800 for two people ($775 including tax) and we were not satisfied for the number of dishes we got. The taste wasn't there. I would not come back nor would I recommend to my friends come. I've been to Michelin restaurants like Acquerello, AL's Place, French Laundry, Gary Danko and Commis for reference. The service was OK. The servers didn't ask us once how we liked the dishes. The cadence (timing) between dishes was also a bit long. You would think at a restaurant where the taste wasn't quite there, that the experience would be exceptional. Nope. Not there at all either. I would have given this place a 1-star given the price and taste but that would be cruel. Coi needs to step it up if it wants to hold on to its 2 stars. I wouldn't event give it 1 star. I'd probably pay at most $75 for this meal.
Be the first to ReplyMy sister and I wanted to branch out from our regular
My sister and I wanted to branch out from our regular haunts on the south side of the city (the Mission) and so I booked this spot on a whim for her birthday. MAN! It was simply elegant. The servers were amazing; they were funny, thoughtful, professional and kind. The food was exceptional; each dish was carefully created to be balanced and flavorful both on its own as well as in the canvas of the entire meal. The timing was superb: we went in to have a relaxed meal and each dish was presented in a leisurely manner without either of us worrying if we had been forgotten. The noise level was perfect for my seasoned ears where background noise can render me deaf to my companion. I could hear my sister's witty comments without trouble or worry of bothering our neighbors. The dishes and decor were pleasing and considered with care that made the whole experience complete. I felt that we were valued. It was a pinnacle experience. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyOur kids gifted my husband and I a night out at COI's.
..A much needed night out I might say, after having hosted 40 people over Thanksgiving...So off we went from the East Bay to S.F.on the busiest shopping/traffic day of the year, day afterThanksgiving. Were were delight to have arrived half an hour early let our shelves in to the sound of voices and vacuuming.Sat ourselves down, 5 minutes later when an employee came around the corner they were startled and informed us that the restsurant was closed. We told her that it was quite alright we understood that we were early and we were just glad to be out of the wet and cold eve. We would gladly wait for the restaurant to open and we'd want for nothing..."I'm sorry " was her responce "but we'll be holding a meeting right where youre seating.!!""Could you perhaps come back?"Now keep in mind,we are in our late 60s, didnt have a car to sit in, it's cold, raining and dark out....not familiar with the area...my husband and I sat on a bus bench..(lovely!) a $750.00 dinner experience? No! Humiliating more like it.

Well...for a 2 Michelin star place, it surely deserves 2 Yelp Stars. The setting of this place is dark and cozy and the noise level is high. I could hear the loud party of six next to us and I could hear the couple in the corner two tables over. Oh and I could hear the guy at the table behind me and two seatings over talking on his cellphone on speaker (as well as the compressed mandarin audio coming from his phone); this went on for minutes and the staff didn't ask him to go to the other room where nobody was seated or anything (maybe they did, my back was to him..but it just went on and on). The wait staff seemed kinda disinterested while they dropped off food or poured drinks quickly saying what it was and walking away fast (forcing us to have them repeat things because we often couldn't catch what they said). It was really just bizarre given the (past) reputation and former 3 star now 2 star rating. The food, well, we we went in between Christmas and New Years and I wonder if everybody was just away. Some dishes were good (the caviar and the opening lemon ice) and some were very good (local crab in beef tendon stew and the new potatoes) and the rest was just meh to ok and really leaned like a spring time meal (not a last week of December...the service opened with lemon ice and that doesn't say winter meal). Lastly the plating was just basic (not what they are known for). Nothing really to see here with originality, creativity, taste, or service. So I gotta say hit literally any other Michelin starred place in SF instead.

3.5 Solid and food was obviously good but I dont think it was worth the price. Also my mind wasnt really blown for a 2 michelin star rating.I did like the creativity of most of the things, but I feel at the price point the ingredients could have been more rare. Its hard to rate since the tasting menu changes seasonally, and we could have just gotten a not so great selection this time around.Overall, while I did have a pleasant experience, at the price point its hard to justify coming back to what I feel was good but not great.

The Restaurant COI (pronounced a la French MOI)Is a San Francisco foodies' delightSustainable, local, organic and seasonalDesigned to enchant and excite! The only problem for the uber-epicuresPatronizing this TRANQUIL retreat Is that (please forgive this unkindly remark) There is very little to eat... As one diner observed contemplating her fareSquinting hard at what looked like fish bait "If I have to compare (on volume alone)And the merits, we'll have to debate Even cats make more poop Granted, not that ornate Than there appears to be food on my plate"
