On a recent trip to Nashville, we tried City House for dinner after reading many glowing reviews, and are very glad we did. Our dinner here was excellent, with good food and service and a perfectly casual environment. City House is located in the Germantown section of Nashville, which we really only saw for purposes of getting to the restaurant, but it seemed nice and wasn’t far from Downtown where we were staying. There is a parking lot right next to the restaurant that we used, or you can also look for street parking in the largely residential neighborhood. The restaurant itself is an old brick house, which looked cute enough from the outside and serves as a good setting for a restaurant. On the inside, it’s really loud and bustling, and there’s really not much décor. It’s mostly just white walls and an open industrial feel. There’s one main dining room on the main level that’s the loudest part, and contains an open kitchen. We were glad that we were seated in a separate and much smaller room that was a few steps up from there. It was still loud, but not as loud, and being in a smaller room with only four or five tables allowed the dinner to be a bit more intimate. Our meal proceeded very well from there. Our server was friendly and attentive throughout, and we thought the food and wine were great. They had a very nicely curated list of Italian wines to choose from by the bottle, and we appreciated that you could find something pretty nice for a decent price point. The bottle of Valpolicella Superiore we selected was very good. For food, we decided to split a bunch of things for our table of five. We started with the frico with fennel and radicchio, kale salad with squash, and crispino lettuce salad, and all three were very good. I thought the kale salad in particular was a really delicious and perfect fall dish, but all three were tasty. After that we had two pizzas and two pastas. We went with the basic cheese pizza and the apple, kohlrabi, and bacon pizza, as well as the gnocchi and the cavatelli with white beans. The pizzas were both awesome, just really tasty with great crust, and the gnocchi was quite good too. The only dish I really didn’t love was the cavatelli, which was pretty bland. It didn’t taste like much more than plain pasta with bland beans, and I’m sure that’s not what they were going for. We also finished by splitting a couple desserts, including the tre latte ricotta cake and lemon almond ricotta skillet cake. The desserts were good, but not quite as compelling as some of the earlier food we had eaten. However, they were large, good for sharing, and generally good, so we had no real complaints there either. Overall, dinner at City House was a wonderful experience that we enjoyed in all respects. We liked the casual, bustling feel of the place since that’s what we were in the mood for that night, and everything about the meal itself was great. Service was good, the wine was nice, and virtually every food item was either good or great. We’d definitely recommend City House.
