Tucked away in a side street in FiDi, this little gem serves high-end donburi in a serene space. ย Half of the space is for tables and the other half is a large bar, and as it is a small space altogether, not recommended for large groups but rather a quiet lunch for two. ย Had the Seared Aburi Otoro donburi which was pricey for lunch at $28, but the fish was excellent and the dish perfectly seasoned so worth the mid-day splurge. ย The same dish could probably be had for less than half that price in Tokyo, but think of this as an alternative to a ticket to Japan. ย Bonus: ย They have Dole Whip!

Chikarashi Isso is an incredible contemporary Japanese spot in FiDi. From the moment I stepped in I was blown away by the beautiful decor--the distinct large circles and wooden themes brought me right to Japan, and then all the geometric lines and black color brought me to modern day. The dimly-lit bathroom is uniquely all black, including the toilet paper! It's a nice touch. The menu was wonderful--not too overwhelming, but just enough choices to have something for everyone. I enjoyed my Toki highball, and we especially loved the karaage and the unique sukiyaki--the waiter came over and melted a large poof of cotton candy over flame to create the sugary base to cook the meat, tofu, and veggies in. Service and ambience were excellent. Would recommend to everyone looking for a unique contemporary Japanese dining experience in the city!

Good looking food and staff is so nice, so I feel a little bad leaving this review, but I can't justify the price of the food or the drink we hadThe waiter here was so friendly and he offered to take off my jacket for me! I am wishing that man well he is so niceI already forgot the name of this drink but we were hoping for a sweet drink because yuzu was included. However, it came out very spicy & hard to down! (Apologies I forgot the name of it, but it is pictured here)We had the monkfish liver, agedashi tofu, chicken karaage, and the tempura plateThe tempura plate was our favorite presentation-wise. All the variety of tempura on top of rocksMost surprising was the monkfish liver, which was almost like a chewy salmonThe agedashi tofu and chicken karaage I felt you could get the same at much cheaper prices anywhere in the city? Nothing too mind blowing but otherwise a decent dinner

Thee we food was always good as well as the service. BUT, TODAY's SERVICE WAS LESS THAN 1 STRAR! We waited for 45 minutes and asked the manager and server "when" and each answer was coming now, coming right up... then finally they admitted they are still preparing without apologies. The excuse for them was "this is normal operation." We we're running out of time plus we could not accept their behavior so decided to leave. We had miso soup ahead of the main order. Miso soup got cold, but they tried to charge us. Finally the manager waived the miso soup but we wasted time and energy. They should let this manager and server go. They don't know how to handle the situation, upset customers, and how to make it up to the customer, other than making all kinds of excuses.

Wasn't certain what to expect after taking a look at their somewhat eclectic menu before stopping by for lunch but ended up extremely impressed. The restaurant isn't very large but nicely laid out was also bright and elegant during the day.We had the Salmon Ikura and Uni & Toro Don and both were excellent with the latter especially standing out. The flavor and texture was amazing! The Dole Whip was a refreshing dessert and provided a nice finish to the meal. Will definitely come back, especially to try their dinner menu.
Be the first to ReplyOur first visit to Chikarashi Isso was at the end of
Our first visit to Chikarashi Isso was at the end of January of 2020 with a plan to return that March when we were back in New York, well . . . the pandemic intervened and Chikarashi Isso was closed for 18 months. Fast forward and Chikarashi Isso is open again and is as great as we remembered on our first visit. While Kappo cuisine is normally left to the chef what to serve, like omakase in sushi, at Chikarashi Isso it is a more contemporary version of Kappo cuisine where the dinners select their courses. The food focuses on seasonal ingredients and may well change from visit to visit. It is very much the fine dining counterpart to the much more casual izakaya-style Japanese cuisine. We will be back very soon!

So bummed I missed their outdoor pop up but I'm still glad I got to enjoy the restaurant! We made a reservation the day before and they checked our vaccination status upon arrival. The ambiance is extremely clean and calm. The customer service was also outstanding as well. Now for the food: 1) Their sashimi platter was really good, but I do wish they had fresh wasabi! 2) The tempura plate was amazing!!! Definitely a must get when you come here. 3) the presentation of the uni ikura don is very nice and it tastes good as well. 4) my favorite was probably the sukiyaki. I LOVED the flavor and how they also provide Japanese egg to dip your meat in.Overall, the food, service and ambiance were all great and I would definitely recommend this place!
Be the first to ReplyThe bowls are out of the mind!Fresh, classic & top quality.
Not mentioned that the management is amazing. Uni toro bowl was exceptionally good and the portions is generous. Seared toro was moist & seared into perfection with the combination of the sauce is heavenly. This would be my best neighborhood restaurant!

Sukiyaki was really good! So was the uni and wagyu appetizer, tempura and smelt. I thought there was an omakase option but there isn't one in the Fidi location.
