Good experience
The food is fresh and bursting with flavor. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. A must-visit for food lovers---------
Be the first to ReplyWay overpriced for bland uninspired meal
Terribly disappointing and overpriced. There is a very good reason they lost their Michelin star so many years ago, what is baffling is how they’ve continued to increase their prices. We paid $700 for the prix fixe menu with wine pairing on a Wednesday evening. The service was clunky but most importantly the food was shockingly mediocre. I absolutely would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. They are charging for the name and legacy but their cuisine and value have dropped embarrassingly low. For $700 I expected to enjoy one of the best meals of my life, this wasn’t even my best meal this week. If the chef has lost their inspiration, it’s time to close up shop, not continue to gouge based on a history that has been tarnished.

Went as a family to this legendary location. It was outstanding in all regards - from the arrival to the wait staff to the food. Our waiter gave the most animated description of the wine options and was interested in what we preferred rather than his favorites. The food preparation was wonderful with great complimentary flavors. Great evening.
Be the first to ReplyService culture needs to find itself - very disappointed
We were recently there for a celebration dinner - an anniversary and birthday. We planned one year in advance. This was a very big deal for us. The food was just as impressive as we imagined. However, the service was very very disappointing. From the moment we arrived to our waiting staff, we were made to feel like we were doing them a favor. No smiles, no conversation, limited interaction - aloof, cold and impersonal. There is no excuse for a highly known and established first class culinary focused restaurant to have that kind of lacking service culture - very sad at these prices.
Be the first to ReplyChez Panisse Cafe
Slow service. Polite and professional but sooo slow. Waited half hour for salads. Food was Mediocre at best. Disappointing. It’s resting on its laurels. Lunch with friends for the holidays and glad not to be shooed out the door. But it took forever to get the food that it was too long.
Be the first to ReplyPleasant dinner with excellent food
I wanted to hate this place, it has a pretensious foodie rep, etc. The waiting staff was very low key and pleasant, our waitress asked basic questions about what we liked or were allergic to, made recommendations, and was down to earth. We had a nice table in view room, which was a little warm due to the west facing windows. The chairs admittedly were uncomfortable. The foods was excellent. Our group ordered different things including desserts, so I'm reluctant to recommend just one thing, especially since everyone liked what we ate (and we ate most of the food family style). The food is bit pricey for what is somewhat standard fare for a fine dining restaurant, but this is ultra delicious standard fare, in what was a surprisingly casual, down to earth setting and unpretentious service.
Be the first to ReplyCafe: Overpriced, uncomfortable seats, and average food
I hate to be the naysayer here but my husband and I were disappointed in the meal and the ambiance of the cafe. Loud, uncomfortable and average the dining experience did not satisfy. I would recommend all servers letting their patrons know there is a built-in 17% service charge (tip) at the time of introduction. Instead, if you have not noticed the service charge (even for 4 people), you put on an additional tip. I had the short ribs (fatty with little meat) and the Little Gem salad (overdressed). My husband and one of our guests had the halibut. Fine but the presentation was fair and the taste average. What I am trying to articulate here is that to drive over an hour, have a dickens finding parking, and then dine in a din, was simply not worth it. As I say on my account here at Trip Advisor, if the meal is terrific, I love to tell everyone. If it is over-priced and average, well, that needs to be told as well.
Be the first to ReplyFormidable!
Today’s menu was very interesting and well chosen. All the four dishes were delicious! I’ll photograph the menu. The fish and accompaniments as well as the duck were a revelation. Cher mais vaut le prix.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional experience at Chez Panisse cafe
A wonderful meal in an iconic setting. We dined upstairs at the cafe, which offered a varied menu, unlike the more formal dining room downstairs (which was much more expensive -- $175 pp -- and where the menu did not appeal to us). I had the tagliatelle with morels and sweet peas, with the baked goat cheese to start, and my husband had the beet salad to start followed by the roast pork loin with mustard-caper sauce. Both were simple, straightforward dishes expertly prepared, and the server's wine suggestion (Nebbiolo) was perfect. While many might have the Chez Panisse dining room on their bucket list, the cafe was perfect for us.

What’s wrong ? We visited in August of 2022 and the cafe was excellent. This time in December horrible. Server BIG TIME attitude. “If you don’t like what you are doing go find another place to work “ Salads pomegranate 5/10 no love here. Fruit was dry and salad was placed on the plate fast food style. Farmer salad dressing boring I mean really boring Mushroom pizza 5/10 salty crust, flavors not inspiring at all Confit duck 2/10 totally over done. Dry and not edible Orecchiette pasta with chili and garbanzo beans 1/10 really ? This was so basic and thrown together we almost returned the dish. So sad … Huckleberry and lemon ice cream 1/10 so so so sweet it wasn’t edible period Apple tart 9/10 excellent crust and delicious. I think it’s time to have a sit down and ask what are we trying to accomplish here. Following this establishment since the day it opened. It’s not me it’s YOU ! We can’t wait for the new team to arrive. Merry Christmas!
Be the first to ReplyTasting menu
Exceptional in every way. As expected. Take a look at their website to reserve as much as a month ahead of time for a chance to experience their tasting menu. I was not able to reserve initially, but they sent a note a few weeks in when a table opened up, and they were all very accommodating with adjustments to that reservation a few days before we arrived.
Be the first to ReplyAn Overdue Visit to an Iconic Restaurant
Flawless Service, impeccable but slightly unexciting food, wine pairings unexceptional The downstairs restaurant has a buzz with a window into the kitchen with an open fire. The food has a heavy emphasis on vegetables which I love, and the quality of the vegetables themselves was fabulous. The vegetarian menu encompassed : A delightful farm egg starter followed by spaghetti with artichokes, and a grilled asparagus main were delicious but nothing so outstanding that I will reminisce over it in 5 years time. The dessert was too sweet and I didn’t finish it but the closing refreshing tea and treats were delicious. The wine pairings were not as good as anticipated and we regretted in retrospect not getting our own choices from the wine list. An experience which we enjoyed, but expensive for what is on offer. A better choice might well be to go to the Cafe. Service incidentally was thoughtful and understated.
Be the first to ReplyTwo years closed, was it still going to be good? Conclusion: just fantastic!
Chez Panisse has been closed for two years and was wondering if it could be just as good. It is even better. We went on the fourth day of reopening. Service was outstanding and the staff really seemed happy to be open and welcomed guest liked they meant it. We were greeted with a glass of Prosecco with Seville orange. First course was a heavenly goat cheese soufflé. The halibut in a clear broth was cooked perfectly. I never order lamb in a restaurant because most do not know how to cook it but the lamb chops were out of this world and were served medium rare. You got three chops. The Apple galette with oranges and vanilla ice cream was so delicious. Each of the wine pairings were perfect. The meal ended with a spearmint tea and little treats. Congratulations to the staff for doing such a great job. The meal and service was flawless.
Be the first to ReplyPre-order / pick up - nonetheless amazing
Unfortunately, when we visited Chez Panisse was only doing pre-order and pick up (no in-house dining), but the food was AMAZING nonetheless -- simple, and delicious we had the roast chicken. you have to order 48 hours in advance.
Be the first to ReplyAsk a Berkelerian...
If you ask a Berkelerian, what is the best restaurant in Berkeley they'd probably say Chez Panisse? Chances are, those who give you this advice have never been to Chez Panisse. It is just the most famous restaurant in Berkeley, the first one that started the farm-to-table movement, well known around the world, etc.etc. It is also known as the priciest restaurant in town, so people automatically assume it has to be the best.
I was one of those people - I have recommended Chez Panisse to many out-of-towners, but I had not actually visited it. As I said earlier, it is a bit on the pricey side, so I was waiting for a special occasion. So, on our 10th. wedding anniversary, my husband and I made a reservation for Chez Panisse and expected to be blown away.
Well, the problem with waiting for something too long, is that you build up expectations. The other problem is that you go to other places and discover plenty of other great restaurants in Berkeley, and you get used to certain standards.
When the actual event happened, it was really underwhelming. First, we were sited at a very small table, with no elbow room, uncomfortably close to other people, and with no view of anything but another person's neck. Second, the portions were minuscule, as if the place was built for dwarfs. We expected to pay hundreds of dollars, but we didn't expect to go home hungry. The menu was limited, to say the least. The food was tasty, but not memorable. There was nothing that stood out, like texture or combination or presentation, or anything else. It was very...ordinary.
The service was good, our waitress was very friendly and very fast. The people were very polite. The reservation was easy to make. So, would I recommend it to out-of-towners again? Probably yes, because it is the most famous restaurant in Berkeley, but would I eat there again? Probably not.
Excellent Restaurant
Really enjoyed the pre-fix menu this past Sat evening. The flavors and ingredients are spot on. The service is outstanding too. I visited Chez Panisse many years ago and found this most recent visit equally as good. The ambience is upscale but not stuffy, so it’s very comfortable and inviting. Very likely to try the cafe upstairs.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing
We had a friend in from New York and thought that he would enjoy Chez Panisse as one of the original greats. Very disappointing. The staff fawned on regulars and ignored the rest of us. The food was boring even the normally very reliable vegetables. The waiter practically pushed us out to make his second seating. In a town with great restaurants, go elsewhere.
Be the first to ReplyOver priced and over hyped.
Had ski high expectations, but the restaurant fell flat. CRAZY expensive for what you get. Felt like I had entered the Mecca of Pretentiousness. Everything seemed like it was dipped in gold (price-wise.) Did not enjoy the menu that evening (it rotates based on what they feel like serving). It was packed and I could not help but feel that I would have liked to have asked the tables around us if they enjoyed their dinners. I think the restaurant is over-hyped. Perhaps it was once much better...but our dinner was slight and seemed lazy. For $300+ for two people eating dinner, I expected more...and honestly would have preferred to have spent $40 and had a great burger from Barney's on Solano.
Be the first to ReplyStill Serving Wonderful Food in the Cafe
This is our third time at the cafe. As usual, the dinner was delicious. I had coq au vin, which unlike most coq au vin dishes, was served without any liquid. The chicken (leg and thigh of a normal sized chicken) had clearly been marinated in red wine and was delicious. It was served with perfectly cooked carrots and spinach. My persimmon pudding was moist and flavorful. My husband and a friend had the lamb, which came with a yummy caper/garlic sauce. Another friend had the butternut squash ravioli, which was quite good. Usually ravioli has a thick pasta and hardly any filling. Here, the pasta was thin and tender and there was plenty of filling. Service, as always, was impeccable.
Be the first to ReplyOver Rated and Over Priced
This is a popular restaurant in Berkeley and must rate well with a certain crowd, but there is nothing exceptional about it, in my opinion. We had a simple two-person lunch followed by a light dessert that we shared with only water served as a beverage and the bill came to a whopping $126, not including tip! The food was presented well and made with fresh basic ingredients but was only average in taste. I have been to a number of good restaurants that fare much better without such exorbitant pricing. We do not plan a return visit.

I much prefer upstairs - more informal, you get to choose what you like - downstairs is chef's fixed price deal
