Great ambiance with live music but extremely rude server and stale profiteroles. Not coming back.

Food service beautiful decor with piano player, wonderful overall after show experience.
Be the first to ReplyFood was huge disappointment.
Steak was so thin It was like 1/4 inch thick! Service was great. Both my husband and I would never be able to recommend based on the dishes we sampled.
Be the first to ReplySnotty waiters, small portioned , average food.
I had the $50 three course meal. beet salid (two slices of beets, half cup arugula, two walnuts, no dressing. Mussels ok tasting but small portion again and greasy soggy frits. Sent them back and ordered green bean, $3 upcharge and unseasoned., lemon tart tasted stale. Would not recommend this place

Great ambiance Meal was a huge disappointment Croque Monsier: picture wonderbread heated in a toaster, with deli ham. Bland cheese not fully melted on top. (Should have known - there were NO photos of that meal in the Yelp photos!) Will not be back. Worst meal in NYC in memory.

I really enjoyed my food however it's too overpriced for what it is. It's good but not something that I would want or grave again. However I think it's really cute for a dinner date or to eat with a friend. I recommend getting the course because if you order separate it's just dumb expensive. Really nice romantic vibe. The girl that plays the piano is super angelic and good vibes. Service is amazing like AMAZING. One of the guys gave us jalapeños and I thought that was such a cute detail. They also gave us free wine on the house. So so sweet. Just too overpriced for what it is but was totally worth it in my opinion. If you're ever in the city or live I would recommend you at least go once lol

UPDATE (February 2, 2024) - After I complained to the Better Business Bureau of New York, Chez Josephine's responded by claiming there was a prior written agreement outlining its position, which is patently false, and that I had requested separate bills only halfway through the dinner, which was also false. Its response then disengenuously offered a gift certificate to me, but provided no amount/details (I am seeking the mandatory 22% tip to be refunded). I replied to Chez Josephine's BBB response upon the day of receipt. Nothing was ever heard back from Chez Josephine's, and the BBB has advised that it was forced to close out my enquiry as "unresolved by Chez Josephine's".
Be the first to ReplyCame here during Restaurant Week, and made a reservation
Came here during Restaurant Week, and made a reservation essentially the day of and there was still plenty of available seating left. When I got to the restaurant, we were seated immediately. The interior design of the place is quite incredible with these large posters, chandeliers, and live piano music. It was such a vibe, I absolutely loved it. I ordered the food off Restaurant Week and I have to say that it felt like they skimped on the meal, quality is not as good as what it would be if you went to eat at the restaurant without Restaurant Week attached to it. Also, the portion sizes were a lot smaller too. Kind of feel like for some restaurants, Restaurant Week is a scam just so they can do some sort of promotion on the list. Also, if you ordered what I did, you can just come during lunch and eat it for $15 less. - Soupe de Jour (Lentils) - This was essentially just lentils soup, wasn't that exciting or memorable. - Poached Sole - I was hoping the fish would be something other than tilapia but it was really just 1.5 tilapia filets with mashed potatoes on the side. Yes it was flavorful but it also felt like a cheap dinner. - Bombe Glacée Pralinée - The dessert was incredibly thinly sliced (think less than an inch in width) and it was pretty sweet. Honestly, not super happy about the food quality at Chez Josephine. I tried my friend's duck entree and it was definitely a lot better than anything I got for Restaurant Week. Not sure if I would participate in this week again... but I may or may not come back to Chez Josephine depending on how much I miss the vibes.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Food and a Special Birthday I was supposed to be
Excellent Food and a Special Birthday I was supposed to be with my parents out of state for my birthday but the weather was bad so I ended up alone. Chez Josephine is on my street so I've walked by it plenty but never went inside. I decided that my birthday would be the day to visit. I asked to take photos as I am a huge admirer of the late, great Josephine Baker. I thought that would be looked down upon in such a classy place but no. I was encouraged to also go upstairs where there was more to see! Granted, it wasn't busy on this early, cold weekday so I wasn't leaning over people to take pics. Staring at a large JB painting by the door, I asked Andy (the manager) to take a photo of me for my mom who couldn't be there for my birthday. He not only took the photo but surprised me with a book, poster, birthday candle and writing on my ordered dessert! He was so incredibly kind and truly made my birthday special along with my loved ones from afar, of course. I ordered the vegetable pasta and the food was delicious. Overall I felt welcome here thanks to Andy. The ambiance as a JB fan was like being at a museum. The book and poster will be cherished. I was just reading about that book prior to going. Who knew I'd come home with it? Chez Josephine, Andy...you made my day. Thank you!!

We chose Chez Josephine by chance to celebrate a birthday and it left us with an unforgettable memory. The artsy decoration, soulful live music, wonderful service and great food make this restaurant very special and stimulating for the senses. If I didn't live on the other side of the country, I would go back often!
Be the first to ReplyThis French restaurant was an elegant overall experience.
I had the Croque Monsieur and it was heavenly (Make sure you have it with maple syrup) our Host/Bartender was dope as well. I believe his name was Andrew, he made the best Negroni it was to die for. I will definitely go here again and take pictures.

My friend and I came here for restaurant week, and it was such a delight! Impeccable customer service, a beautiful ambience, and even live music! I wasn't expecting a live pianist there during brunch. It was such a treat! There's complimentary French bread and butter to start, and because it was restaurant week, we got a fantastic deal on a multi-course meal. Everything I had was delicious! The presentation of the food was lovely too. If you're a Josephine Baker fan, then you definitely must check this out! They have beautiful art of Josephine Baker here too.

In a nutshell: A MUST visit if you saw HBO's The Josephine Baker story and want to soak on nostalgia in this Theater district maison.GOODNo reservation no problem (granted, I am coming Sunday around 8:30PM) to be seated promptly and brought a menu almost instantly. This a new place you'd like to checkout pre or post work (I am talking to you entrepreneur) because it's certainly not conducive to bring your laptop and work for here... as far as bringing business clients that is somewhat questionable, unless you specifically know they're into Josephine Baker, this restaurant it's too bold for conducting business. Considering I'm Vegetarian/Vegan my choices here are very narrow but if you're omnivore and love French cuisine you won't be disappointed to find a lot iconic Parisian dishes on the menu accompanied by colorful and unique decor that takes the dining experience to another time and space.BADThe prices are on the line (some items 5 stars restaurant prices) with other 4 star French restaurants such as Balthazar, Pastis & Mairselles but the delivery is middle America diner so you are basically paying for dining at a Josephine Baker museum not because of the culinary experience or service level. Do not get me wrong, the service wasgood for New York standards but not for a luxury French restaurant standard. The portions were HUGE, and the flavors were adequate as in passing a test with a C... if I were a tourist from middle America I think that would be my ideal of luxury... but when you are an experienced foodie and traveler you can simply tell this is theater-diner food as the best I can say about it. Again, if you are businesswoman or man in town and want to checkout the place for novelty sake, stay at the bar and order an appetizer if you must and see how's the ambiance like because when it comes to the actual food, is not worth the price.BESTI would admit that my waiter stated being too pushy for my liking but after he understood I needed a minute and then started to pay attention to my wine refill made up for the first part of the service and appreciated his suggestions based on my dietary habits, although I didn't hated the Bombe, the Chocolate cake was better but saying that doesn't meant much, for a chocolate cake that seemed bought from a generic bakery- you know -that standard not much to it dry chocolate cake. The best, as you see in the pictures, is the restaurant decor and worth paying a visit for.

Went there for restaurant week and had a great dinner with entertainment. Then went on a Saturday night a few weeks later and was disappointed. Our wine order was late and food was not hot and not up to par. Maybe just the wrong night to go there.

Food is always good but I walked in on a Saturday at 4:30 and was made to feel bad for not having a reservation. The restaurant was empty and I was willing to sit at the bar but the older gentleman who I assumed to be the owner begrudgingly sat me at a table all the while bitching about me not having a reservation. He could've very nicely turned me away but instead he decided to make a big production out of the whole thing. I would've walked out but I was hungry and after his reaction I figured I would stay just to annoy him. Cranky old guy should be nicer to his customers.
Be the first to ReplyFood, ambiance, and service is amazing.
Live music on Saturday nights is super. Best seats are toward the back near the piano.
Be the first to ReplyMy date said this was the best ambiance he'd ever
My date said this was the best ambiance he'd ever experienced at a restaurant. We visited during Restaurant Week, on a quiet uncrowded Monday after the usual lunch hour. Three reverence and love given to Josephine Baker can be seen throughout the textured walls, olde posters, and tapestries. I'd give the food a 4 out of 5 stars, but the ambiance is unbelievably decadent. Also, you just can't beat a Restaurant Week special: $29 for Lobster Bisque, Sea Bass, & a wine-soaked poached pear with ice cream! Will return during dinner for the live music hours, 6pm to 10pm
Be the first to ReplyFun place.
Good food, service and art deco atmosphere. Too bad they don't have a lot of Vegetarian options for dinner, but they do for lunch and brunch.

Just amazing! We were on our way to watch a musical and wanted to stop at a bar near by and ended here for drinks! Well the atmosphere was amazing and magical! Live jazz! My favorite! Drinks were perfect and we ended going back after musical for appetizers, drinks and dessert! Service and food was great! Prices were good! Booked it for valentine's dinner! Didn't disappoint! Everything about this place is great.

We had such an amazing dinner at Chez Josephine! The ambiance was wonderful, and the food was delicious. We did the restaurant week dinner which is 3 courses for $39. I have gluten and dairy dietary sensitivity's and the kitchen was very accommodating and made me a delicious meal. I got the beet salad, skirt steak and poached pear dessert. The skirt steak was cooked perfectly medium-rare and was delicious. There is also live music! The pianist Gabe was incredibly talented and even let me sing a set with him. I would love to come back to Chez Josephine!

Went here for date night and it was very cute! My favorite was the poached pear dessert. Definitely recommend getting that!
Be the first to ReplyWe met a dear friend here for Restaurant Week.
Our friend had been before, the first time for my Wife and I. When we arrived the waiter greeted us in a cold and unpleasant manner. He began seating us at a table by the entrance, we asked to please be seated elsewhere, the waiter was adamant about us sitting at this particular table despite the restaurant being empty. I would have left at that point but I didn't want to spoil our friend's dining experience.About the time we were being served our appetizers, two women entered and haggled with the same waiter about where they'd sit . He acquiesced to them and seemed quite solicitous. No such luck for us. The waiter continued to be curt and nasty. When my Wife asked a question about an entree, he was dismissive and smug. I've had more enjoyable times at the DMV. A glum encounter. I'd never go back.

After walking past this restaurant countless times, I finally took advantage of restaurant week to come enjoy the French cuisine for a set 3-course dinner for $39. Reservation is recommended, but not necessary if eating early on a weeknight (before 8pm). You'll find live jazz music - singer and pianist starting around 8pm. Service was attentive and without issues - we were seated quickly and checked on often. I found the food to be very good, but not necessarily memorable. Bread basket was most disappointing. It came out cold, and by my guess having worked in a French restaurant as teenager, the bread we had was a day old. It tasted more chewy than soft dough of baguette, and certainly didn't have that outer 'crisp.' At the very least, I wish the restaurant would warm the bread before serving. Escargot: great garlic butter flavor. Grilled Skirt Steak: cooked perfectly medium, sauce good. Profiteroles au Chocolat: just alright - the profiteroles pastry were dry and not chewy, not soft. Overall the restaurant was fine. Excellent food presentation and fast service. Maybe a better pastry chef would make it great.
