We went to Char for the first time on January 29th. We are new in the area and are trying out local restaurants. Based the reviews from others we expected a high-end steakhouse experience but unfortunately this did not happen. I made a reservation and said that this was a birthday celebration. It turned out not to be a dinner worth a celebratory event. We came to the restaurant and were promptly seated since it was a early reservation. As we approached a nicely set table, I noticed that it was very near the doors to the kitchen and in fact I could see directly into the kitchen from my seat. What I could see of it did not look clean and organized. Throughout the dinner I saw many a near collision between servers entering and exiting the kitchen since there was a large service bar impeding their progress. We noticed that there seemed to be a dress code for the servers but glaringly one female server was not following it since she wore a jeans jacket over her black outfit. I noticed a small champagne style glass included in the place settings at each table and wondered why they were there. I soon found out why as we were approached by a waiter offering each of us an initial glass of effervescent wine. Since I was the only one at my table drinking alcohol at the time, I accepted the small taste. It was a low end sparkling wine to my palate and the others at the table were not even offered the option of a sparkling grape juice. The dinner proceeded from there and we ordered appetizers and an entrée each. We waited quite a while (slow service) and the waiter came out with 3 of the 4 appetizers we had ordered. After being informed that an appetizer was missing he assured us that it would be forthcoming – it never came. We later received our entrees, 3 steaks and a fish entrée. The steaks were of average quality but the fish was good. Two of the steaks were not cooked to proper conditions and we sent one of them back to be redone. I ordered a glass of pinot noir wine to enjoy with my steak. When it came it tasted off because not only was it from a bottle that had been obviously opened the previous day, it was served very chilled (about 45degrees.) I sent that one back and got another glass from a newly opened bottle but it was also served chilled. Since chilling to that extent severely effects the nose of a red wine and thus effects it’s taste in a negative fashion, I asked about serving cold wine and got the response that all wines were stored “in a refrigerator.” I was astonished that this wine was so improperly served and this made me wonder about how that practice would effect the quality of other wines with higher prices on the wine list. After dinner, we ordered two desserts, a “chocolate souffle” cake and a crème brulee in a chocolate shell bowl. They came and finally the missing appetizer showed up with them. The “souffle” was the consistency of a dense brownie and the chocolate shell bowl was so thick it was difficult to crack and eat. During our dinner we observed another couple celebrating an event and, as part of the restaurant’s efforts to support this, they received the biggest sparkler firework I had ever seen in a close indoor setting. The firework spit sparks that traveled about a foot for about fifteen seconds. Does the fire department know about this dangerous practice?
Needless to say, based on the average quality of the food for the price charged, the slow inept service, and the general neglect of the safety of staff and patrons, we do not recommend this eatery.
If you must go, overlook the details and get overcharged for a dining experience that should be so much better if anyone cared.
