Disappointed by Dinner at Casanova
We have been going to Casanova for well over ten years, maybe longer, when we visit Carmel but only for lunch. When we arrived into town on Friday we decided to go here for dinner. Unfortunately, it was a real disappointment but an expensive one at that. The service was poor; we had to ask two individual twice to turn on the heater above our table on this very cold night (and we were inside--part of their charm is that they have a tree growing inside but that probably does not seal well). They were out of what felt like half the menu (and especially the lamb shank ($49) that my wife was already looking forward to). The substitute was a pork chop that she did not finish; I tried it and it was overcooked and not spiced at all. She asked if it was the same price as the lamb but it was $55. I could have cooked a much better pork chop at home. My cannelloni ($38) was good. We split a salad ($20) that had three pieces of something in it. The menu was just a thin piece of paper so I don't understand why they didn't reprint it with the substitutions rather than disappoint diners. The total bill (with 15% tip) was $161. I do understand that we have had a lot of inflation and they purchase high quality, authentic ingredients (I do myself when I cook at home). But for such an expensive meal I would expect a lot better. As a friend told me last night, "I don't mind paying for a great meal, but it needs to be a great meal!" I think at some point the management changed hands and that might account for the drop in quality. For positives, it still has the same lovely décor as always. I ordered a glass of the Georis Pinot Noir from Carmel Valley ($16) and they brought a glass and serving container that would actually work out to almost two glasses--a good option for couples that want to sample different wines during the meal.
Be the first to ReplyNot the chill, romantic culinary experience of yore
The Good The Dover sole with potatoes was delicious and nicely prepared. The mushroom ravioli was very good but not amazing for its price point. They have an impressive wine list (as always) to match just about every palate and whim. The Bad The vibe was rushed, like a trendy restaurant on the west side of Los Angeles. We leave Los Angeles and come to Carmel to escape that vibe and crowd. Not low key, not mellow, not romantic. What happened Casanova? Another first: they did not have the wine we selected. The sommelier spent about 13 seconds assisting us to find a replacement. In the past, it was an educational experience, an opportunity to be transported and hear the wine’s story. Alas, no such experience this time. Not even a perfunctory attempt. Meanwhile, some random grunge heavy rock was playing near the chalkboard. Very incongruent with what one would expect from a fine dining establishment billed as a romantic spot with wines of distinction. The Ugly But another first: the $24 burrata appetizer was an absolute prank. First, it was cheap burrata you’d get at Safeway, not the creamy dreamy variety from a specialty foods store. Apparently, the kitchen ran out of tomatoes so they subbed them with heavily salted yellow beets cut into quarters. The drizzle of olive oil seemed like an after thought or perhaps the final few drips from an empty bottle. No attempt whatsoever at any presentation. Really? Like we wouldn’t notice or taste the difference between tomatoes and beets? The restaurateur who owned Casanova 20 years ago would have been mortified. Yes, they took the item off our bill after we questioned the dish. But I don’t feel anyone should have to question anything at this price point, much less in a Michelin starred restaurant. Bottom line I never thought we’d be disappointed with Casanova. It is exceptionally over-priced for what it now delivers, which I’m uncertain what that is. It feels like a scene to be seen, one of conspicuous consumption, rather than the chill, low key, romantic spot with amazing, creative dishes and wines to live, love and explore. Casanova used to be all about the food, the atmosphere, and impeccable service … a true culinary experience. Today, it is not the 5 star dining experience of yore befitting a Michelin rating. They were doing brisk business so clearly others don’t share my opinion. At the moment, it feels very much the “in-spot.” After two decades, we are no longer the “in-crowd.” Not returning here again.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals we have ever had!
My boyfriend and I eat out quite a lot. Casanova provided one of the best meals and service that we have had. We started with Astra Sour Dough with Aged Cultured Butter, Spinach Gnocchi Au Gratin, and Steak Tartare: Wagyu Ribeye, Pickled Green Tomato, Shallot, Cornichon. All completely melt in your mouth starters. My boyfriend devoured his Duck Leg Confit: lentils, chicory, seasonal mushrooms and I stuffed myself full with the Cannelloni: Braised Beef, mozzarella, Truffle, Tomato sauce. We barely managed to fit in dessert but the Chocolate tart: chocolate sabayon, crème fraiche was amazing. We were getting full while eating but it was so good we kept going. Needless to say we ended up going back to the hotel room in a food coma! That is how you should feel after having an incredibly cooked meal. Props to the chefs. This is a great place for a romantic dinner as well as a group dinner. Their wine list is extensive. The service was excellent. The manager Christina was spot on. Her recommendations and knowledge of the restaurant and food really made our experience memorable. Our server was very attentive and service was very prompt. We left feeling special and will certainly return next time we visit town. We highly recommend Casanova.

I made reservations in July for Aug and needed to change from party of 4 to 9. I had been calling since, but was told, no table for 9, call back. I did make it clear that if we can’t get a table for 9, we didn't need the table for 4. I was assured, it wasn't a problem, they understood. The day of our reservation, I pass by the restaurant just to check, they have a table but different time, I said “okay” let me check the group if that time works, after 5 mins I said the time doesn’t work, was told no problem, “we’ll cancel it”. The “we’ll cancel it” is the issue. The table for 9 was booked in the system and when she cancelled, I would be charged with a no-show fee of $25 pp. A few days later I see the charge and call. I explained what had happened, a staff member said she would let the manager Alla know and Alla would call me. A few days pass, no call, I call, same thing, Alla will call you, this repeats for two-weeks. More calls, I finally speak to Alla, I told her the issue she says "no problem, I will process your refund now". A week later, no refund, more calls, I speak to Alla, she says the refund is "pending" with the vendor and would call "to fix". Another week, no refund, more calls and messages. I get a message that Alla is out town and call Lily. I call Lily but only keep getting voicemail, a week of calls and messages, nothing from both. In total it’s been a month in a half. At this point it’s hard not to conclude they are dishonest and $ is more important to them.

We always eat here when we are in Carmel and still love it. Great service, ambiance and staff. Expensive but worth it. We will keep coming back.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolute best experience!!! There are still incredibly kind people out there, and this place is home to them
If I could give this establishment and its management 100 more stars I would!!! My husband and I were visiting California from PA and just happened to be walking down the street in Carmel looking for a public restroom when we actually ran into a man named Walter, who we later found out was Casanova’s owner, walking down the street and asked if we needed directions. We started talking to Walter about our trip and our backgrounds, and he invited us for a tour of his beautiful restaurant. We had such a wonderful conversation with him and then we were blown away when he surprised us by so graciously having a table set up for us with the most delicious food and wine, free of charge because he knew we were traveling on a budget from so far away. It was the most kind and generous gesture as this was before peak hours on a Saturday afternoon in his very charming, popular and historic establishment. Walter has such an incredible personal history and his restaurant does as well! Amazing food and wine in an amazing atmosphere with even more incredible management. Please make this a stop if you are ever visiting the area!!! Thank you Walter and Casanova family for being the highlight of our vacation :)

Fantastic dining experience. Icing on the cake was getting to see & learn the history of Van Gogh table at the end of the night. We will definitely come back when in Carmel again. Also, will recommend to family & friends!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing mushroom pasta
Yum! Best meal we had on the trip. Kind of gave us stomach aches, so I took off one star. The beef was a bit too much for us to handle. I would order a vegetarian dish. I had the morel mushroom pasta special, and it was outstanding. I ate all of it, that’s how good it was. Their bread was also super delicious. My husband ordered the cannelloni with beef, which we think is what gave us some stomach woe It was my husband’s birthday, and they gave us a bit of champagne to celebrate. Definitely a unique touch that I haven’t seen before. Service and ambience was incredible. Highly recommend.

We ordered the caviar & were disappointed with the accompaniments. Thick Belgian waffles instead of bilinis or toast points. The caviar was tasty but the waffles overpowered the wonderful caviar & the accompaniment was a crème fresh rather than the usual accompaniments. The sorrel mushroom pasta special was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional -- our best evening in Carmel
Wonderful dinner -- our best evening in Carmel -- special date night out -- we enjoyed oysters, asparagus, seafood linguini, and roast lamb with white beans. Exceptional service -- nice wine Moulin a Vent -- note extensive wine list, prepare early. Really quite nice.
Be the first to ReplyNever got to the eating part
Called for a 8 PM reservation for seven of us, gets pretty cool at night in Northern California, but I was NOT told that the seating was outside, nor was I called and told that before we showed up with our wives who were not exactly dressed for the occasion. They put a number of outdoor heaters around the table, so that worked. Two of our party are Testavin members, into fine wines, and three bottles, each over 25 years old and expensive were placed on the table. We were told that they had a corkage fee before we got there, no problem, but we were not told until we got there that only ONE CORKAGE per table was allowed. We left, went to Mission Ranch, should have gone there in the first place

Best dinner yet! We were in town celebrating our anniversary and we’re thankful to have made reservations here. Sat in The patio area at the large table That wraps around a tree:) Dinner was delicious- Cannaloni Asparagus Beef tartare Excellent wine from their extensive collection. Great service. Our 3 time here, and we’d return
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best meals on the trip!
Casanova is one of the best restaurants in Carmel. Everything was perfect. Our waiter was very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The sommelier helped recommend a very reasonably priced bottle of Malbec to accompany our meals. And he didn't give us any attitude when we told him the price range of bottles we were considering.
As for the food - my friend and I stated with an appetizer of escargot. And for my entree I enjoyed the Dover Sole. This fish is not often found on restaurant menus, but here you can find it - perfectly prepared.
Charming with Tree in Atrium
We'd been here 15+ years previously. It was a bit darker and cramped than we remembered, but still charming and with a romantic dining vibe. I would have liked to see vegetarian entrees on the menu, but they were accommodating and made me a pasta with veggies dish. Tablecloths would have added to the feeling of cleanliness. Friendly place, and a fun dinner.

Exceptional dinner at Casanova in Carmel-by-the-Sea. Everything from the food to the service to the suggested wine pairings were phenomenal. We shared several items including the escargot, steak tartare, 9 oz Snake River Farms Eye of rib Eye and the Dover Sole carved table side. Best meal either of us have had in a while. Will definitely be back!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food & service, Van Gogh table!
The food and service here are excellent! Plus the Van Gogh table makes it a special place, a meal to remember. The gnocchi is truly amazing, a very unique and tasty dish. The steak was perfectly cooked and tender, like wagyu beef in texture. The peppercorn sauce accented the steak perfectly. The linguine was another amazing dish, full of different seafood and very filling. Desserts - the lemon tart was tangy, the chocolate tart not too sweet, and the latte was visually pleasing as well as rich. But the real surprise for us was the house rose’ wine — not too dry, not too fruity — a perfect complement to our meals. We liked it so much, we bought 2 bottles to take home! (And we’ll visit the Georis Winery next time we’re in town!) James Hernandez’s staff were truly attentive, providing outstanding service. Highly recommend this restaurant — it’s expensive but truly worth it. We will be back!
Be the first to ReplyGreat good, beautiful site.
We had the Van Gough room for 6 of us. The service was wonderful. Attentive and helpful. Appetizers of gnocchi and prawn croquettes were great. We all loved our main courses. It was a terrific night for our business dinner.

We try to dine here every time we come to Carmel, and we are always pleased with the quality of the food and its preparation as well as the professional staff. Expensive but worth it for the quality.
The service has always been on the leisurely side (it's Carmel and we're on vacation, so that's fine by us) and that has not changed although I am sure that they must be short staffed in the kitchen as are the other restaurants in this area.
We had a long drive back to Carmel after our outing and we were going to be late for our 7:15 PM reservation on a Sunday evening. We called and advised the restaurant, and they told us that our table would be ready whenever we got there (turned out to be 30 minutes late and we were led directly to "our" table).
Youi should reserve well in advance for a weekend meal.
Amazing dinner
The ambiance was wonderful- we felt like we were in Europe. The food was delicious! They have a very extensive wine list. The service was great. Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyGood to Very Good but not amazing...
We all agreed that the best dish of the night was the gnocchi appetizer. Everything else was good to very good, but didn't meet our expectations for a Michelin rated restaurant. For example, my friend had the $70 Wagyu ribeye which I sampled. It was good, but it could have been a filet from Costco. So nothing wrong with it, but it just wasn't that special. Same played out for all our dishes, except for the gnocchi...

My husband and I ate at Casanova during our honeymoon on recommendation from a friend. It absolutely exceeded our expectations and was a highlight of the trip! The location is charming, the staff warm, and the food delicious. You MUST order the gnocchi. It was the best we’ve ever had. We hope to have an occasion to return in the future!

Casanova had been recommended by several friends and reviews were encouraging, so we went with high hopes.
Upon seeing this charming restaurant with its stonework, plants and flowers, and the rustic table settings in and open-air environment, our already high hopes went up.
Our waiter was very friendly and very professional. He helped us with our meal and wine choices and was quick to accommodate when we noted that the nearby heater was a bit too warm.
I ordered a pork chop from the specials that night and it was moist and delicious (among the best I've had) and the accompanying succotash was a surprisingly tasty treat. My wife and daughter had similar praise for their meals (duck confit / linguini with clams, shrimp, mussels). We ended our meal with the Basque cheesecake. It was moist and delicious.
Overall, we had a wonderful evening. I can't wait to return.
