Camphor Los Angeles Reviews from The Last Year
Sat at the bar/chef's counter.
It was easy to get a last minute reservation. The amuse was a nice little bite. The seam bream appetizer was delicious and my favorite dish of the night for sure. It felt healthy and each bite was balanced and delicious. The burger was very good. Service was excellent.
I felt this is a highly overrated restaurant.
The food is somewhat unique (at least the way it was described) but far from being great. The service was very, very slow. The waiter oversold the dishes and so when we got to eat them they were a disappointment. Ambiance is OK. Not too different from most hip DTLA restaurants. Considering the above, the dishes were totally over priced.
Any modern take on classic dishes was not very good.
Everyone can get away with it . Other dishes where excellent. Desserts excellent. Service was good. Space is nice.
Great dinner, beautiful atmosphere, and outstanding
Great dinner, beautiful atmosphere, and outstanding service! They do have valet, we got street parking but that can be difficult in this area. Drinks: Latin Quarter - my husband thought it was delicious. Like a margarita meets a whisky sour. La Chapelle - my husband also really liked this one. St. Tropez - I ordered this non-alcoholic drink and it was delicious. Not too bitter, which I sometimes feel about drinks with aperol. Food: I'm a vegetarian and my husband is not, so they were able to make some suggestions and accommodations for me which was very helpful. Bread & butter - this was delicious. The butter is mixed with some sort of cheese, it had a sharp cheese flavor to it which I loved, and it paired so well with the honey. Onion Tartine - this was my favorite dish! Soooo good. It comes with a duck broth, but they brought that on the side so I could eat it without the broth. You have to order this if coming here! Burger & Fries - my husband loved this. The cook was a perfect medium rare, how he ordered it. The bun was brushed with duck fat, and the caramelized onions were delicious. The fries were also cooked really well and came with 3 different sauces (ketchup, spicy aioli, and honey mustard). The mushroom dish - this was the vegetarian entree option. It came on top of rice and with a red wine Marsala sauce. It was very good! Potatoes - this was mashed potatoes with herbs, it comes with a demiglasse but they brought that on the side for us since that was not vegetarian. This was also good, though I'd probably skip next time just to save space. Seasonal vegetables - this was smoked asparagus with a bernaise sauce. The asparagus was cooked to perfection! Marzipan - we finished with this dessert, it was a marzipan ice cream encased in lemon shaved iced. Really delicious and super refreshing. Overall, I highly recommend coming here. It felt like fine dining, and they were super accommodating, kind, and answered any questions we had.
My Fav's French Bistro @ L.
A. Amuse-Bouche (Complimentary) , Tartare "Beef & Herb Tempura" , Scallop "Demi Lune" , Ribeye "Maître D' Butter". Sooo Much Enjoyable.
Excellent French restaurant in DTLA.
Everything was very good, just extremely pricey and could've been slightly better to justify. The best - Scallop pasta Beef tartare with tempura Onion tart Beef bourlogion Just fine (especially with price) The chicken Dover sole The desserts
Camphor is a wonderful spot and after a phenomenal meal
Camphor is a wonderful spot and after a phenomenal meal with friends it definitely earned that Michelin star. They have a fantastic wine list and we ordered a few stellar wines. The space is beautiful and relaxed - not very different from when it was Nightshade. The service was impeccable from the second I walked into the space until we left, full but happy. I had my favorites, including the sea bream, clams, spinach vadouvan (similar to a saag preparation), the scallop pasta dish, bread with the epoisses butter and the oysters are not to be missed. But across the board, the drinks, food and experience was excellent, highly recommend.
Camphor was a really good experience all around.
Food, ambiance, service & wine were all great! I had a lot of anticipation since it was a Michelin star restaurant. And I really enjoyed myself. My favorite was the French Onion Tartine. Rich & flavorful, it truly has that "French" appeal. I was very happy with the service, too. They were attentive, but did not rush us. And their pacing of the meal was very good. Sometimes restaurants move a bit too quickly. Camphor was just right. Our party was there for about 3 hours and it felt it went by quick! To me, an enjoyable dinner like this would be between 2-3 hours, closer to the 3 hour mark. I received a text a few days prior asking if we'd like to pre-order any of their specialties. Apparently they run out sometimes. But I don't know if that's true or not. Nonetheless, we chose to pre-order the Dover Sole, Beef Bourguignon & chicken. All three were very good. I asked the server to round out the meal for our party of six, and he nailed the suggestions, including the quantity. We ate everything and were satisfied but not stuffed. Perfect amount of food! Overall, it was a wonderful evening with family at a wonderful place. The ONLY knock would be price. Despite my favorable review, this place is pricey compared to other nice restaurants in the Arts District. Even with its Michelin Star, I feel it could be priced a bit lower. And if it was, perhaps I'd rate it higher. But in today's environment, I do give them credit for how they charge. They do not have any added fees for "better benefits" or "rising labor costs", etc. it's a straight up bill and you can tip as you see fit. They even emphasize that any gratuity goes all to the staff. Bi appreciate that! Just beware that they do pass through a 3.5% fee if you use a credit card. We knew that ahead of time and brought cash! It saved me about $25!! See pics for what we ordered. All were really good. Just wished pricing was a bit more reasonable and it likely would have been a 5 star rating.
Loved the decor.
It was clean, streamlined, and chic. I was a bit worried that it might get loud with the pretty high ceiling, but it wasn't too bad. Even the menu was beautiful. We ordered Opera and Le Marais to start, and they were both delicious. We loved the pommes frites and scallop. I don't think I've ever enjoyed ravioli as much before. It was so delicate yet creamy, perfectly showcasing the texture and taste of scallops. The short rib bourguignon was a bit of a disappointment. The gnocchi that accompanied the dish had quite a mushy and unpleasant texture and not much flavor. I did not enjoy it at all. Additionally, the short rib felt a bit overcooked and had a bit too much fat on them. The Kiwi mint dessert was another thing that we did not fully love. The first impression was refreshing and pleasant, but the more I had it, the more it tasted like soap. It was a bit bizarre. Service was awesome. But to be honest, I really didn't appreciate the 3.5% charge on the credit card use - this is not some cheap grab-and-go spot where I might have enough cash to cover. Also, it's one of my little pet peeves when the restaurant's suggested tip is calculated after tax. I know, it's not much. I'm not so concerned about giving a few extra dollars for the tip, but technically I shouldn't have to pay a tip on the tax. It really makes me not want to be more generous.

We had such an amazing dinner at Camphor, and I love the fact that you can choose from an actual menu unlike many fellow Michelin starred restaurants that employ a fixed/tasting menu. The food was just absolutely amazing, and the service was prompt, friendly, and attentive. We started with oysters and a radicchio salad (kind of like a caesar salad?) followed by the clams with garlic and parsley. We also ordered the scallop demi lune and the steak au poivre (filet mignon) with a side of pomme frites. Everything was super delicious but I think my favorites were the clams and the steak au poivre with the pomme frites. The steak was just done so perfectly and I think pomme frites were the best "fries" I've had in a while. They have a great selection of wines and instead of going with the wine pairing option, we decided to just order glasses individually with recommendations from the server all of which we really enjoyed. Overall it was just a great experience, and I can see myself come here again and again in the future!
