Bonnie's Brooklyn Reviews from The Last Year

From the moment the restaurant opened, people clamored to get their table. We sampled almost everything on the menu and were not disappointed on any of the dishes. The menu is diverse and showcases the culinary skills of Chef Calvin Eng. Just one drawback is that with the size of restaurant, having just one bathroom for the entire restaurant is a little daunting. Overall a great experience

I stopped by last night, a few friends recommended it (both for food and drinks). Some of the drinks were good but the bartender had an attitude and was weirdly aggressive. Not sure if he was having a bad day or just on too many drugs, haha. The vibe was cool though, and I'll be back (and hopefully have better service)
Not "just" a Chinese restaurant.
Chef Calvin pulls from his past to deliver amazing dishes while still keeping with the flavors of his mom's Cantonese/Toisanese dishes. Don't expect to find your typical sweet-and-sour pork with its cloying, red-dyed sauce. Rather, be amazed by his use of fermented bean curd, salted fish, and XO sauce (to name a few). While we were a party of 10 and had reservations for 5pm, I was surprised to see many people lined up to get in as soon as the restaurant opened. All tables were filled by 5:15. Can't wait to go again!! My personal favorite of the night - Naw Mai Fan (shiitake, king trumpet & shimeji mushroom conserva over crispy sticky rice)
Service was very friendly.
The location was very chill. We came around closing time and last call time. They let us know multiple times before hand so we got our full order in. The cocktails were pretty tasty. We got a variety of their dish as seen below. Now for the food. Their fried rice was pretty good but very standard. For the price we paid I'd much rather go somewhere else. Rib sandwich is definitely overhyped. Taste was very strong on the hoisin side. Texture could be better for the price. Walnut shrimp was prob the highlight. Again you can get it elsewhere. The chicken was pretty good but would be alittle better with a different sauce. Overall experience is good but alittle pricey for what we got.

Came here with a reservation for 8pm on Saturday with a group of 5. Here's what we got: dao gok (Chinese Long Beans) - this is a MUST these were so good! I wish we ordered 2 plates of these instead of 1. Definitely need to get these! gerng jook (Congee) - this was really good! As a vegetarian, it was nice to be able to try something that isn't usually vegetarian friendly. This was so good! I especially loved soy egg naw mai fan (Mushroom Sticky Rice) - this was good not great. The bites I had with the mushroom were really good but without mushroom it was a bit bland. x.o cheung fun (Rice Rolls) - this was by far my favorite and are a must! The small rice rolls were PACKED with flavor. Wish the portion was bigger but these were so good. 10/10 must! fuyu cacio e pepe mein - this was really unique! Definitely tasted like cacio e pepe with a twist. I would get this too! bak cheet gai (cold poached chicken) - my friends really liked this! Fair warning, when they say cold, it is really cold. But they loved the flavor of this! The rice and sauce with the chicken was also really good. Fair warning though, it does take a while to come out. Overall, it was a great experience and I would recommend giving this place a try. I will say, the food is pretty expensive for what you get and it took over an hour to get our main dishes after we got our appetizers which was a bit of a let down. Other than that, we had a great meal!

Such fun and interesting food, the drinks are incredible too! Everything we got was amazing and we'll be back often!

Highly overhyped restaurant that serves traditional cantonese dishes with smaller portions, higher price point, and with cantonese pinyin names. Not a fan.
This restaurant is really over-hyped.
I thought that ideas/concept of the dishes were very interesting, but honestly all of the flavors were lost. Every dish was so oversalted I was literally thirsty for hours afterwards. I also think they were a little heavy handed with the msg (which I love cooking with, but you can just dump a bunch in and expect it to taste good). Basically, I have no idea why this has so much hype other than the dishes sound interesting on paper and it's a small place so it's hard to get a reservation. Also worth noting when we went here everyone dining and cooking at this restaurant was white, so maybe it's made for a more american palate We ordered: - the chrysanthemum salad which was pretty good, but nothing special -salt and pepper squid which was basically mushy, extremely salty calamari - long beans and youtiao which again had this heavy salt/msg flavor which got old. The beans were kind of mushy. The youtiao was good, but it's fried dough so that's always going to be a win -mussels these were good and juicy. The sauce was nice and I liked the small shoestring fries. However, I feel this dish was pretty standard. I guess I haven't seen mussels and fries at Asian restaurants before so that's interesting I guess? - rice rolls had the same flavor as many if the dishes above. I liked that they were crispy but wanted a little bit of chewiness that I've had at other places. -the trout was fine. It's a very creative concept and the fishcake was pretty good but not mind blowing. And after eating so much salty, bland food it did not stand out to recover the meal In summary: a bunch of average/below average food for a pretty steep price (both monetary and having to fight for a reservation) Pros: -Service was good -Interior is cute - I actually thought the portion sizes were pretty decent for an upscale fusion place in NYC (though no one really wanted to finish each dish) - MSG martini was delicious
Several of the dishes were really special.
The chrysanthemum salad is unmissable. And the fried squid was excellent. I thought the cacio e pepe was good, but not especially notable; and the updated rib sandwich was also good, but not spectacular.

Love love loved this dinner! I wish I remembered our servers name, she was super nice and helpful in our ordering. We sat outside and it was like 30 degrees out so I was worried but we were totally covered and closed in with heat lamp things on the ceiling per table - most people took their coats off. We had the peppered shrimp and that was STELLAR! It was flavorful and unique and just delicious with a large portion. Also had the mussels which were in this amazing broth that we loved! Overall a really great spot if you can get in!
Interesting ~ but not quite “exquisite”..
The ambiance was a bit questionable from our vantagepoint in that neighborhood: specially from the streetside plywood shed ~ which is basic, to say the least ! Thankfully, it wasn’t freezing at 5:30 that evening, with the drafty door and cheap plastic sheeting ‘windows’ that enclose the structure. Its sooo hard to get a table here that we had to choose a really early dinner – far, far earlier than the 8pm-ish time we wanted. And the electric heaters are minimalist ! ~ if that’s a design statement. The music was too loud and crazy - waaaay past our generation. Service: excellent ! Ellis was a wonderful host. Attentive and helpful with the choices and suggestions. Thank you. Drinks: expensive ! …specially when half the glass is occupied by a huge boulder of ice that soon dilutes your drink if you don’t chug it down. Food: the x.o. cheung fun fried noodles that look and taste like blah lumps of dough.. not great. Noodles should be noodles – not overgrown gnocchi. And I dislike gnocchi… what the heck is a lump of underdone, pasty and tasteless dough doing disguised as food ? The shrimp & walnut was really wonderful, with crunchy lumps of walnuts that preserved a separate form and sweetish taste to complement the large, scrumptious, chewy and well spiced shrimp, with a creamy sauce to bind it all together. And lastly: black pepper steak. Great ! Cooked just right and well balanced slices of meat, with colorful pieces of chopped, sauteed vegetables that are not overpowered with spice or chilies. Oh.. I didn't mention the Tinned dace dip, which comes in a sardine tin. (..and now, I did !) It's really very good. We’ll go back. It’s been difficult getting a reservation as they’re really booked up. I guess that’s the real consensus here ~ and I hope they will thrive. But, if you’re keeping that outside shed, folks, you REALLY need to invest a little. But I gave them 4 stars on Resy.
The Best Wings In Park Slope!!
Right on the heart of park slope I had the chance to enjoy the best wings hands down I order the bbq and the hot spicy buffalo wings (Mild) and it was really tasty, food is fresh and they also have outdoor seating.

Good Afternoon. It looks like you have requested a name transfer for Carbone NY. Unfortunately, this is one of the restaurants that is almost impossible to do name changes for. They don’t accept phone calls so they are difficult to change the reservations that were booked online.
