Perhaps I'm biased, but Minato has to be one of my favorite
Perhaps I'm biased, but Minato has to be one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Hawai'i. It's a nostalgic memory for me to go with my grandparents & always come out with a full stomach. Growing up, I'd always get the chicken katsu kids' meal and it would be more than enough for me. Now, I get the chicken karaage/croquette combo and it's SO good. For their dinner meals, they pile up the food in the to-go boxes. The workers are always so nice too. When I'd come before COVID with my grandpa, they would remember us and even now after COVID, they help my aunty (who walks with a cane) carry the bags of food to her car. Truly my favorite restaurant on the island, not just for the food but the great memories

Had a nice Friday night dinner at Minato Japanese Restaurant. I had the tonkatsu ramen and tendon bowl and my hubby had the 2 item combo with miso butterfish and tonkatsu. Everything was delicious! The staff were welcoming and friendly. This is a great place for Japanese food. We will be coming back again and again!

Wow my rare 5 stars. Never had nanban chicken before covered with a very egg-y sweet tartar sauce( see the egg pieces). Huge sweet deboned chicken. outstanding salad in sweet sesame dressing. Vinegar veggies and sour potato salad Hate sour stuff and no flavor edamae. My eyes rolled back in my head, it was sooo good.

I have been eating at Minato's for the past 20 years and they've never disappoint. Their food is always delicious and although, like everywhere else, prices are going up, their prices are still reasonable. They have started charging a nominal amount if you pay with a credit card. I love their salad dressing which I buy from Don Quijote. Some of my favorites are the furikake salmon, tempuras, spareribs, miso butterfish, salads and their nabeyaki with soba. Since the pandemic, I've only ordered take out and at times it can be a 40 minute wait. Their estimate wait time is usually on time or within five minutes but never more than ten minutes. They are located on the first street (turn right on Hauoli) past McCully Zippys and they are on the right side of the very short block. I highly recommend you try this restaurant.

The ambience is relaxing with colorful string of lights and music. The service is slow but probably because the kitchen is slow. The taste is ok, on the lighter side. I ordered pork sukiyaki and had to remind server for rice and egg. He was apologetic but took a while so my broth got cold. However, the egg came in a hot broth. I wanted to scramble it but got it more like poached. The teishoku looked a bit sparse but tasted ok. We ended with a homemade dessert, an azuki bean with haupia ice cream. I wish it was creamier. I had ice crystals when I scooped but others liked it. Overall, not bad but not great to want to return. The best part was the price was decent!

Wonderful, nostalgic atmosphere, great service and ono and home cooked meals. Price is super affordable especially during these times. We got the combo miso butterfish and salmon furkake, as well as sukiyaki. Both was bomb. Server came over and also gave us MOCHI! Maybe it was because it was on st Patrick's day but we throughly enjoyed everything and will come here again. Come here for low key, affordable food :)

This is one of the few places left where you can get a plate full of food for around $10. Seriously that is such a good deal now in 2023. Everywhere else will charge $13-15 for the same amount of food... Fish or meat with rice and salad is a perfect meal for my family and I. Anyways, it was our first time here and we decided to get 2 one choice plates (1 chicken katsu plate and 1 saba and karaage chicken plate) and udon with saba for my wife. There is only 2 people working at the restaurant doing everything by themselves, so they were super busy when we got there around 11:00am. It must have taken 20-30 minutes wait to get our food. But when it came out, we were all happy to see what we got. Just the parking lot gets filled up quickly with lots of people going to the Fujiya mochi store next door, so you will have to wait for a stall to open up. Also the interior of the restaurant needs a bit of updating, but for the cheap price I can definitely get deal with it. Give them a try if you are in the area and are craving for some Japanese food.

A+++ Highly recommended!!! Our go to restaurant for family meals. Minato meals are delicious and reasonable. The staff is always friendly and attentive. I love how you get origami chopstick holders and they also have a basket of intricately folded origami by the door, I think for the kiddos to take and enjoy.
Be the first to ReplyMake reservations just in case they are busy.
Parking lot is small but free street parking in Mccully area. Lunch special are about $2 discounts and there is a credit card fee now(forgot how much). Customer service is great and friendly. I did have to wait about 30 min after ordering for food on a non busy lunchtime. Udon and shrimp tempura was delicious and satisfying for price of $9.99. My friend had dinner bento wort sashimi, pork katsu, rice, salad and edamame which said advised it was okay. Overall I was happy with my lunch and I would go back.

Be the first to ReplySo happy that Minato finally has begun dining in.
We've been doing take-out since the pandemic, but nothing beats dining in, freshly prepared dishes. We had the curry upon, miso butterfish and shrimp tempura and tonkatsu dishes.

This restaurant was so good! Absolutely blew my expectations out of the water. The customer service was out of this world, the food left me so unbelievably satisfied, and the shop itself was so cute! Everything was so personalized (they even hand-made origami chopstick covers!!) and it was perfect for a late night meal this has honestly been one of my best experiences at a ramen shop. I definitely 100% recommend this Japanese restaurant !P.S- The homemade dressing was super delicious!!

Minato is my go-to place when I'm craving a quick and tasty meal! I always get their noodle combo of cold soba and karaage chicken. This comes with a salad and their creamy dressing! The cold soba is refreshing and the crispy karaage chicken comes with a dipping sauce. The lady who is always working is very nice too!

Food is good, prices are not bad and taxes are included.
Be the first to ReplyHorrible customer service.
My mother was a regular, and so naturally I became one too. We would go there often, but that immediately came to a halt with an interaction of one person, ย and we've not gone back since. It was this punk guy instead of the usual lady, not once had a problem with ordering till then. When I asked about the order not being the usual, was shouted "You ordered it that way", no other means to resolve the issue, slam the money on the counter. Only reason he gave a refund was because he talked to the cook/owner through the curtain window. Bad day or not, treating a regular like that, nope, I said bye, and I've not returned.
Be the first to ReplyThis is our favorite J-food go to.
It is well priced and the portions can't be beat for taste and price especially with the miso butterfish. They have been renovating and can't wait to visit when it's done. Did I mention they also have cold beer on tap? lol Just be patient and nice they don't have a huge staff so sometimes they get a little busy. It's a nice neighborhood place that gets you simple dishes, if you want more than that go elsewhere.
