Hit or miss on this outing.
The nuts were a good start and the matzo ball soup was delicious-- but not sure if I tasted any miso in it. That said the steak and fries we way off - fries were not crispy and the steak was very chewy-- even at a medium rare. I think they didn't cut against the grain. Not sure if I would come back. Service at the bar was great. I did ask if I could just have a water bottle, but they wanted to pour it for me every time.

Everything we ordered was very solid.

Ridiculously overpriced, the price was not at the level of the food that we got. I have been to many restaurants where I spent half the money for better food

8/10.... Food was very good. Very impressed by the unique flavors and an extra oomph to the usual vegetable dishes that we know and love. The relish tray was lovely. The beet salad was unique but just ok. The mushroom dish was light and tasty and my favorite was the southern noodle was very good! I'd definitely go back for that noodle dish. The cornbread was also very light and flavorful. the drinks were missing something, they weren't well balanced in my opinion. The main reason for 4 stars is the service.... The service was just ok. Everyone was extremely nice but not very attentive. We waited a long time to order a second round of drinks and for the second course to arrive. No one really checked on us although we were the only ones at the kitchen counter. Servers could've been more detailed in explaining the dishes. Desert was also nice. I'd go back and would recommend

Be the first to ReplyThe food here is very weird.
Some might call it "hip" but I disagree. I was not a fan of any of the 5+ dishes I tried, and most of my group agreed. The butternut squash dish was particularly odd. I'm convinced it was not actually squash, but squash skin/rind. Tasted bitter as hell. The matzo ball soup was the only thing that was edible IMO.

Finally tried this "Jewish meets Southern Comfort" place as the g/f and I were entertaining a friend visiting from New York. Made a resv. for their lovely dog friendly patio which was alot quieter than the inside. It's off the street so no car noise or fumes. $12.00 Valet Parking a must as we saw very limited street parking. Although he wasn't our waiter, server Brian came by many times to check on us and offer suggestions (he's a longtime friend by the way). Dishes are meant to be shared so we got a bunch including: - Laura's Kiwis $18.00 - Sumac and strawberry flavor -- these served as a nice amuse bouche / palate cleanser. 8/10- Beets w/ Deli Flavors $21.00 - Nice dish, the beets were finely chopped and came with smoked trout roe. Unusual, but excellent 9/10- Southern Noodle Kugel - $23.00 Nothing like the kugel your Nana made - more like your basic mac and cheese. This dish missed the mark. 5/10- Pickle Chicken - $34.00 Fried w/ spicy pickle sauce. My favorite dish -- this one was a nice surprise. 9/10- Lamb A LA Saless - $59.00 - Came sliced and not gamy at all. If someone had told me this was steak, I would have believed it. Very good but a hungry person could eat this himself so overpriced in my opinion. 9/10- Rose Petal Pie - $14.00 - It's "World Famous" so we had to try it. Texture takes getting used to as it's more gelatin than pie -- but flavors were on point. 9/10- We were comped a large piece of Chocolate Cake which was good. 8/10To sum up -- we ate lots of food and enjoyed it -- nothing went uneaten and there were no leftovers. However, the bill was about $100 a person (with our group having only one glass of wine and a beer) so bring your best credit card, expense account, or rich friend. (Unless you are that rich friend!)

The GOAT! Was too busy eating to take photos of food but our service was incredible from start to finish. One of my go to spots on the west side. Can't get enough of the everything beets, cucumbers, lamb (highly recommend)! Everything they do they do really really well and are very allergy friendly! Plus great ambiance super open space

Love that it is dog-friendly.Attentive staff.A solid 4.5 stars, but not quite a 5 star, as they miss the mark on a few key dishes. We started with the 'Beets With Deli Flavors' ($21). Served cold/room temp. Quality selection of cooked beets, topped with smoked trout roe, Creme Fraiche, and horseradish. I loved this dish - especially the surprise that beets and roe are delicious paired! Others at the table found it lacking that something special. Our second 'cold dish' was 'Laura's Kiwis' ($18). Topped with Sumac, strawberry & salted peppercorn. Again, I enjoyed the surprise of the unusual flavor combinations but others at my table were not wowed. From the 'hot' menu, the standout was the 'Smothered Conehead Cabbage' ($21). Topped with pickled caraway & crispy sauerkraut, it was both unusual and tasty. Our server touted that the cabbage was cooked over a wood fire, and to be honest, it could use a lot more of the wood fire effect to turn it from good to excellent. The 'Southern Noodle Kugel' ($23) was disappointing. If you want a modern mac and cheese, try this. If you love kugel, don't. Not that it is a bad dish - if they remove kugel from the name, it would be a good dish. The 'Pickle Chick' ($34) here is legendary, so you know we had to try it. That they only make 14 daily adds to the draw. If you are gluten-free, it is unusual to get a gluten-free breading on fried chicken, so there's that plus. It is breaded with potato, fried, and served with dill pickle hot sauce, fresh dill, and dill pollen. We enjoyed it and would get again. For a fried chicken, surprisingly light and not oily dish. Good dish to share among 3 people. Then my favorite part of any meal - dessert! The 'Malted Chocolate Layer Cake' ($13) was rather ordinary. A nice cake but not a strong malt flavor and nothing exceptional.Their signature dessert is the 'World-Famous Rose Petal Pie' ($14) which brought to mind the jello-cakes of the 1970's - now I remember why these went out of style. The others at my table raved about this one, but not for me.

Three of us stopped by for dinner at prime time on a busy Saturday night. Because we had made an initial reservation for two people and then added a third diner, we were sent off for reeducation in a bar booth. This was actually fine -- we had adequate space and were not assaulted by nearby noisy conversations. In fact, there was plenty of good people watching in the bar, and of course you can order from the dinner menu.Birdie G's lives in its own culinary world, but it's an OK world to inhabit: you risk little by placing yourself in the hands of the chef(s). Looking at the menu ahead of time, I was attracted immediately by the Pickle Chick. Because there are only 14 available each evening (!), I phoned the restaurant when their lines opened in late afternoon and tried to reserve a PC. "We don't do that" was the long and short of their answer, but I was assured that my chances of snagging one of the coveted chicks were excellent if I requested one as soon as we were seated. When I did exactly that, all the pickled chicks had already flown the coop. To get over my disappointment, I volunteered that a lemon pepper chicken would be an adequate substitute. But of course it wasn't really anything like a substitute because I was already fixated on the pickle and didn't like that some carpet had been yanked from other me.Looking further at the menu, I spotted a bunch of well-chosen wines from around the world (California, Oregon, Italy, France, Spain...) as well as a variety of dishes to order that looked as if they could satisfy all sorts of tastes and appetites. Our server trotted over and explained to us the basics of how small plates are supposed to work; he recommended that we order six dishes for the three of us and share everything. We ordered six dishes, but shared nothing. I don't know exactly how that came to be; maybe we didn't like being given instructions. I thoroughly enjoyed the "tinned" mussels (which were in fact served in a tin) and the aforementioned non-pickled chicken. I can't say that I ate a balanced meal (which included no salad and only a faint suggestion of vegetables), but I did like the food and the orange wine that I ordered to go with it.The three of us spent around $270 (including tax and tip) inside the restaurant and also doled out additional dollars for the valet parking. Coming from the SF Bay Area, I found that Birdie G's represented an excellent start to my LoCal visit.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional food.
A hidden gem. Birdie G's has flipped my opinion on dishes I thought I didn't enjoy. Visit soon, bring company, order big, and include multiple appetizers for the table to share. Pickle chicken if it's available. End with rose petal pie.

Fabulous. Shout out to excellent service all the way around...starting with Hannah the hostess. Nothing like starting the evening with laughter. She's great. And our waiter Kevin was the perfect combination of charm and efficiency. Now on to the food. We wanted to try everything, especially when watching dishes coming out of the kitchen, but settled on starting with the cornbread (get it! it won't ruin your appetite), peas and pecorino (brilliant), and rice flour battered trumpet mushrooms (crisp and earthy). At this point, I said to my husband that I would happily come back and eat just these three things again. But wait, there's more. We also got the Pickle Chick (if you love dill, you have to get this perfectly fried chicken) and the Lamb "a la Saless". I generally don't order lamb, but my husband loves it (and it was his birthday), so I gave it a try. This is a lamb dish I would order for myself as it was perfectly prepared with interesting seasoning. And of course, we had to finish this meal with the rose petal pie. Leftovers from the chicken and lamb tonight. Hooray. And finally, we can't neglect sommelier Chloe for looking at our order, suggesting three different wines that would work for both the saffron with the lamb and the dilly chicken. I'm so glad we took her recommendation. Can't wait to go back and try other dishes on the menu.

Came back to this place after a few years away and it did not disappoint! Great ambiance on a Friday night and the servers were really friendly. Started with a cocktail (Birdie Spills the Tea: lemon, honey, passion fruit, meletti, iced tea, angostura bitters $16) that was light and refreshing, not too alcoholic. I love having an option that isn't too boozy! We then split:- a half order of the Relish Tray with the vegan onion dip. I really enjoyed the different pickled and fresh vegetables and the dip was delicious.- the Pickle Chick fried organic half chicken with a dill pickle glaze to dip in -- really fun and unique!- Roasted Sunchokes with a cashew ranch -- tasty and savory - World Famous Rose Petal pie -- unique jello pie with a delicious salty pretzel crustOverall, it was excellent! We had to take some home as we couldn't finish it all. I would definitely come back.

I'm sorry - $15+ dollars for mediocre matzah ball soup that consists of broth and ball is a freakin joke. You should be ashamed of yourself. If all the places weren't closed already I'd of asked for my money back

This restaurant is close to my boyfriend's apartment so we've been meaning to check it out. We came on a Sunday with two friends and ordered the twice cooked yams, beets, mushroom carpaccio, noodle kugel, Kogi flat iron steak, and rose petal pie. They also have a long cocktail menu, so we had fun picking out a few different drinks to try!We agreed that our favorites were the noodle kugel (incredible), Kogi flat iron steak, and the rose petal pie. We enjoyed the mushroom carpaccio and twice cooked yams, but wouldn't order the beets again. Finally, the ambiance is intimate and tasteful. I enjoyed our experience and thought it was a nice spot to go for dinner!

I came here for a belated Valentine's Day double date with my fiancé, brother, and sister in law and had one of the best meals I've ever had in my life. Not only were the food and drinks amazing, but the atmosphere was perfect. The service was fantastic, both our server and the sommelier were knowledgeable and helpful. The whole place has a really great vibe, a perfect spot to gather with people you love over a delicious meal. It's all family style, so we got to try a variety of dishes. Must eats include the radish tray, ceasar salad, yams, fried trumpet mushrooms, peas and pecorino, lamb, and the bone in rib eye. The cocktails and wine selection are also great pairings to the food, and I definitely recommend saving room for dessert!! You can really see Jeremy Fox's vision come to life on the plate, it truly is elevated nostalgic food that warms your belly and soul. We will absolutely be back!
