never again
We had dinner here few times it was always good to okay never great never bad either, but this Monday it wasn't a good experience. Stuffed Flounder dinner ($42) that supposed to be stuffed with lobster and crab meat had no stuffing at all; never mind lobster or crab neat! It was two small pieces of filet lying flat on a plate with some bread crumbs on top with few asparagus and some wild rice, fried calamari appetizer had literally 10 pieces of rubbery calamari, wings and flat bread were good. Been in restaurant business for over thirty five years I have never seen stuffed flounder served like that. Service was good! On the way out it felt like we just got ripped off after spending $145 for food and drink Plus $30 tip for two appetizers,on sandwich, one main course two glasses of house wine and two gin and tonic.

always a good meal, very busy on weekends. Very nice atmosphere and very busy bar scene. Nice drink menu and reasonably priced.

Typically I give this spot high marks, the service is fabulous and we've never had a bad meal. Tonight I ordered the pork special and it was extremely and pervasively seasoned with pepper and not tasteful at all. Peppery gorgonzola sauce spread over meat, vegetables and potatoes, which meant that the entirety of my meal was awful. At one point had to use ladies room to wipe the flavor out of my mouth. Wish my waiter could have given me a heads up as to the extent of the "kick."

Decided to stop in as we had not been there before and it was open on a Monday afternoon. Happy we did. Ordered the Mussels "TO SHARE MENU OPTION" and there was plenty for two people. Made southern style with chorizo sausage and very good. Ordered the Tuna Seared on spaghetti. Crusted to perfection and cooked rare as requested. Ordered the house burger which was very large, cooked as requested, on a roll with lettuce and tomato. Comes with choice of fries. Will be going back as the service was friendly and efficient even though the room was full.

There are many good restaurants in the Newtown area, but this one is very good on some levels. The setting is rustic with a very nice fireplace providing heat and ambiance and good use has been made of the space to create intimate dining areas that did not feel confining. Our large group was comfortably seated at a good size table with a server who was efficient and communicative - not overly enthusiastic or outgoing, but more than capable of getting the job done. The menu is reasonably sized with a little of everything: Steak, seafood, pasta, chicken, etc. We opted to start with the Pork Belly and Calamari appetizers. The calamari was well prepared with crispy tender pieces enhanced with a sweet chili sauce. The pork belly was amazing with great flavor and tender melt-in-your-mouth pieces. Neither portion was particularly generous (particularly for the mid-teen price point), but the flavors were worth it. For entrees, we opted for the Shrimp and Grits and the Sacchetto pasta. The shrimp were slightly undercooked and at $32 (as of this review) the shrimp should have been larger or there should have been more of them. The grits were purported to have cheddar and jalapenos in them, but that seemed to be more advertising than fact. The standout of the dish was the sweet chili sauce. The Sacchetto pasta purse dish was very flavorful with a great balance between the onions, mushrooms, short ribs, and cheeses. That dish, although relatively small, was worth the $28 price point. Barnwood is worth a visit and the full house indicates that diners are not put off by the price point. I'd make it a regular spot to eat if the prices or portions were more reasonable. As it is, we'll return but only on occasion.

I walked into this place with great expectations. The restaurant and bar are tastefully decorated, with a nice cozy fireplace and wonderful ambiance. The menu was excellent, with lots of great choices. Server was reserved but polite and attentive. So far so good. We ordered the lobster and clam chowder, which sounded wonderful. It came in a lidded metal terrine, which when opened, revealed a nice, rich chowder (pinkish for some reason, which seemed odd, but okay). It was delicious, but COLD. How can the special lunch soup of the day be cold at 12:30 pm??? The burnt ends sandwich sounded great, but the meat was incredibly dry, and the cheese and arugula were off to one side, so I had to open it up and spread things around. And again, it was COLD. Flatbread pizza was a good size, a little over-cheesed, but...you guessed it....COLD. So apparently, we caught them on a day when the ovens and microwaves were out of service. It baffled us that a restaurant of this caliber, both in atmosphere and menu choice, can miss out on the basic concept of delivering hot (or at least warm) food to its customers.

Stopped at BBG the other day after a long drive through Litchfield County. We love Newtown yet have had challenges finding a favorite spot to eat while passing through on our way home. We were pleasantly surprised when we ate at the bar and had a really tasty dinner. We shared the savory stuffed mushrooms and the wife had Black Seabass (on special) with a delicate lemon sauce. It was so good that I almost ate 1/2. I had the Sachetto with mushroom and braised short ribs and it was perfect. Lirik(?) was our server and was very friendly and professional. Really looking forward to returning and checking out the rest of the food. Happy they are in business. Place was real busy...they will do well.

There were 9 of us for brunch. Our service and food were both terrific. The waitstaff was friendly and attentive, but not obtrusive. A couple of us had the Barnwood platter. Highly recommend it! Steak & eggs and buffalo chicken wrap were also yummy. I would definitely go back.

We met friends here for a casual dinner. Drinks were fine. Bread arrived without butter or dipping oil ( didn’t matter, we’re not big bread eaters). Shared calamari appetizer which was yummy. Main courses were all very good ( salmon, burger, steak and brisket). Very adequate portions. Priced fairly . They do have a noise problem which, unfortunately, we have found in other newer restaurants as well. Would return.

We have been going to Barnwood Grill since they opened their doors. Never had a bad meal or experience. Owners are always present to make sure you have a good time. Wait staff is very responsive. You never feel rushed. They obviously have a great culinary team. In my opinion, they should hold the #1 spot in rated Newtown restaurants. This is an upscale but comfortable restaurant that you can dress very casual. During Co-Vid, we feel safe whether eating inside or outside. The menu offers something for all diets, allergies or special requests. You can also hang out by the bar for cocktails, appetizers or dinner.

The service was great & friendly, but the food was disappointing! Ordered Cod on the specials & it was under cooked & no flavor. The risotto with corn had no flavor & was more like plain rice. For $32 I expected more! The side of asparagus for $8 was 5 stalks on a plate. My husband had the pork osso buco on the specials & it was underwhelming! We ordered from the specials thinking the choices would be good!
I will not be going back!!!
Great food, drink, and service!
The Barnwood Grill has upped its game! My husband & I have been to the restaurant four times in the past few months and each time has been terrific, both service- and food-wise (and the COVID precautions not only provide protection but actually add to the ambiance). The drink & food menus offer traditional favorites along with creative new choices each time we visit. Steaks are cooked to perfection and the sauces on everything (meat, pasta, apps, etc.) are incredible. Even the bussing staff is top-notch. We're going to make this our weekly dinner/drinks go-to. Highly recommend!

Consistently very good food. Daily specials help to always have something new in addition to a substantial menu with great choices

One of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Served sizzling in a cast iron pan. Delicious. The drinks are also next level quality. Great service and atmosphere.

Family stopped in here lunch. Decor was very cool but that was the highlight. I ordered the shrimp and grits. Very disappointing. Shrimp were way over done and drowning in some chili sauce. Wife had a chicken dish which she did not finish. Wasn’t bad but not great either. $13 kids meals are a joke. Service was good as well. Very friendly staff but probably won’t return.

service was outstanding and food was as well. Good following Covid guidelines. Ate outside and couldn't have been more enjoyable or safe. Highly recommend. Eaten here many times and rarely disapoointed.

Spent a special occasion with great friends at the Barnwood. This place was a great choice based upon previous reviews. All service people were friendly and accommodating. Food amazing as well as drinks. Unfortunately missed happy hour by a few minutes but that was ok. Would definitely return!

Our go to place for fabulous food, especially if you have food allergies, wonderful drinks, and outstanding service. We especially love the bar staff, Arben is the amazing and Gary is great also. I believe they have a full house at happy hour because of these gentlemen. Nine times out of ten, it's the place we go when we're looking for a night out in town!
