As good as it gets!
We wanted something special for our anniversary and weren't disappointed. This place has a tasting menu. We had 8 different small plates. Every one was incredible. A mixture of flavors, tastes and textures that complimented each other so well. I'm amazed at how someone can come up with these combinations. Emmy, our server was marvelous as were all the other staff. I did ask them to cook my piece of ribeye a bit more as I don't like beef that's not well done. They made it perfect. Two different fabulous desserts were masterpieces like the other small plates. Although not cheap, this was as good a meal as I've ever had. Sometimes it's worth paying more because in this case you got what you paid for.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding!
There are many great places to eat in Austin but this place has to be one of the absolute best! The quality of the food, service and ambience is worthy of any top restaurant and I donโt think it would be a stretch to say that this is Michelin star quality. If you ever visit Austin, please pay this place a visit - you will not be disappointed!
Be the first to ReplyThis bunch just cares...
From the moment we set foot in the door, you could just feel it โ the love. It shows in the food, the presentation, their oral descriptions, how guests are received, handling custom requests, answering questions, getting you what you want, knocking your socks off with flavor combinations โ these folks just care. And, as a result, we do to. That kind of dedication is so rare. We appreciate it. Specifics โ hey, it was all good. I think the duck and the beef were most impressive this trip, and one of the opening beef courses had a roll with some interesting taste explosions โ sour/savory ingredients in great proportions. Thank-you guys ! (And, thank-you Eric for that special touch โ we wonโt forget it !) C & J

7/27/2023 Barley Swine Title: "How to push your favorite home cooked recipe to the list of mundane ineptitudes โฆ make a reservation here." OK, I have not the facility to strictly dissect the culinary minutia of what I am tasting here this evening, but, I can most certainly receive and describe my reaction to what I am tasting. The difficulty is in resisting over stepping the mark, thankfully, as this team over shoots my vision, my expectation, of the afternoonโs imbibement altogether. The obvious attention to detail boggles as one goes from course to course โ presentation, yes, also, but primarily - palate sensation is fully engaged, over, and over, and over, again, with each course. A memory whisp of the Cordon Bleu academy prior to Domain envelopment, and the cross contaminated education (teacher to student practitioner, student to recipient, recipient to teacher, etc.) here far exceeds that ritual โ no questions asked โ yes โ โWeโll try that tooโ โ and we are never the loser โ the tidbit always exhibits a broad new world of palate spectral sensation. Yes, โhit the spotโ, vast understatement, and, but truly more. Of fourteen some odd bites, none a loser, but a few standouts โ Zuchini/chevre starter, Chefโs salad, Black river caviar/duck fat brioche/hot sorghum with champagne, Yellowtail/hoja santa/corn relish/masa, Muscovy duck/sungolds/tatume squash, Foie Gras/peach chutney/tostado, and the peach doughnut with peach leaf ice cream. If pressed, Iโd give the blue ribbon to the Black Caviar/duck fat brioche served with champagne. My gosh (insert preferred expletive), what a taste. The full list - 1 Zuchini, chevre *Favorite starter 2 Garden puff 3 Chef's salad 4 Bluefin tuna, tomato kosho, yellow watermelon 5 Black river caviar, duck fat brioche, hot sorghum (Supplement) *Favorite meal item 6 Yellowtail, hoja santa, corn relish, masa *A close 2nd/3rd 7 Shitake dumplings, soft scrambled egg (Supplement) 8 Muscovy duck, sungolds, tatume squash *best version of duck so far for us 9 Foie Gras, peach chutney, tostada (Supplement) *2nd favorite 10 Akaushi ribeye, kimchi, gochujang 11 Brown butter panna cotta, cantaloupe, pepper granita 12 Peach doughnut, peach leaf ice cream, rum (very nice) 13 Chocolate (simplification, name?) popsicle (not a menu item) 14 Chocolate peanut butter brittle cookies (special extra) Superb food, royal service, top notch mixologists, exceptional ambiance, over the top care and treatment โ a very special place to eat.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an outing !
5-12-2023 Barley Swine Oh Brother, what an outing ! 3 hours (we lingered, not them) disappeared in the snap of a finger, it seemed, with delicious bites, one after another gone way to quickly โ you just want to freeze time and savor everything. Tantalizing tidbits, artfully presented โ both in food prep โ visually, as well as for the palate, and in an eclectic array of dishware. We did the tasting as is customary these days there, and opted for every โsupplementโ on the menu โ didnโt want to miss a thing. The Black River Caviar, Duck Fat Brioche, Hot Sorghum item blew us away. The Kohlrabi/chevre, Garden Puff, and Chefโs Salad starters were also tasty favorites. The Foie Gras Strawberry Tostada really lit us up, and the Shitake Dumplings with soft scrambled eggs always rock. Just a true experience all around. Itโs fun to take someone new and watch as they taste this food for the first time, as we did this trip โ a reminder of our first โwhat the Hโ reactions from earlier trips. โGood foodโ, or even โGreat foodโ as descriptors just donโt begin to cover the territory. How do you put to words all the various little taste explosions that are happening when you bite into these ingeniously created offerings ? Surprising flavor combinations, beautiful, extremely satisfying. So well done guys ! Thanks for a wonderful early Motherโs Day outing. Memorable ! Oh, before I forget, the Grilled Flatbread/ribcap/crawfish item was outstanding ! Thanks for the โextrasโ too yaโll. What a staff โ kitchen, bar, greeters โ all wonderful. (PS โ the 1/2 doz. chocolate peanut butter cookies were gone before we hit our driveway ! Yummm. No regrets !)
Be the first to ReplyIncredible food, impeccable service
We ate at Barley Swine last night with friends and it exceeded our expectations. The food was amazing and each bite had layers of flavour. Iโd thoroughly recommend the wine pairing. Our every need was met by our server Devon and our glasses were never empty.
Be the first to ReplyMore than a meal, a creative culinary experience!
Amazing experience. We enjoyed the Chefโs tasting menu and we were not disappointed. The menu is varied, inventive, and blends together to create a memorable culinary experience. The food is locally sourced and the paired wines were not the usual offerings. Chelsea was our server and she was knowledgeable, attentive and friendly. The restaurant has an intimate ambience without being stuffy. Our positive experience began with our phone conversation to make our reservation (strongly advise) and continued through to picking up our car from the valet. We will return!
Be the first to ReplyThe restaurants name is about beer and pork but the food and the wine make it so much more
Definitely a 10 out of 10. The restaurant was very rustic but charming at the same time. The staff was extremely friendly, knowledgable and accommodating if there are any allergies or food intolerances. The food as we did the tasting menu was absolutely spectacular. I would highly recommend this restaurant as it hit the top notes on all levels

The separate courses were incredible! Wife and I went while in Austin for the weekend and couldnโt have asked for a more amazing dining experience. Food was delicious, service was over the top, and the environment was really cool
Be the first to ReplyLife !
Food is life, right ? Plus or minus some personal priorities/ideologies. Life in these modified days finally afforded us a trip out to the world interface in the guise of food not cooked by us, food not imagined by us, food/drink/life elevated above the pandemic plateau, a past view of pre-pandemic culinary glory. So glad for the opportunity. Not disappointed. Blown away as a matter of fact. The printed word on the menu leaves no clue, kinda, as to what is really in store - learned not to question their wisdom. Radish bagel, smoked turnip turn your head ? Taste it. Now talk to me. Yeah, see what I mean ? Whoa ! Nice. Very nice. Tip of the iceberg. So many more sensory shocks in store. Chef's Tasting items were not just a warm welcome to almost forgotten public repast, more like - word loss embolism for description as courses arrived and disappeared. Next, next, next, what, we're done ?! No !!! I'm home, I'm happy. I'm thinking - when can I make this happen again. Many, many, thanks - Bryce, Lindsay, Stefan, Caitlin, Kevin, Alexa, Eric, et al, for what you do. Life reaffirming. Truly talented folks. Glad this Austin edifice crossed over to the other side. Yet another understatement. Visual, and culinary, reawakening. Not to mention warm and welcoming. Thanks guys, we more than appreciate what you do ! Please keep it going ! Love what you plate. Be the first to ReplyGood Dining Experience
On a visit to Austin for our anniversary, I did my best to try to find a place that would be good to celebrate. Booked in advance for dinner, gave them all the details and everything was pretty easy. This review is during covid, they were managing everything well and even provided individual mask holders which was awesome. Atmosphere was very casual and not that intimate but service was very good and we were given a personalized menu with anniversary wishes which was a nice touch. We had the Tasting Menu and went for the optional beverage pairing as well. Tasting Menu ($105pp) with Beverage Pairing ($55 pp). 1st Course - Smoked Fish/Hoja Santa, Tartare Tostada, Pear/Jalapeno Bacon - The Smoked fish was similar to a fish cutlet, it was tasty. The standout from these three dishes was the Pear Jalapeno - the baon was so delicious, a total fusion of flavours and the mesquite honey drizzle was divine! The wine pairing was Fish Sauce' Muscato which went quite well. 2nd Course - Blue Crab/Spaghetti Squash/Coppa - Wasn't too blown away with this one, it tasted like dressing a bit, was lacking flavour. Paired with Andre Dezat Rose Sancerre 2019. 3rd Course - Red Snapper/Pepper/Masa - The peppers honestly tasted similar to mirchi bajjis, and looked a bit like them too - was not as spicy though and the coating was a bit oily. Red Snapper was pretty good and had a nice presentation. The sauce and wine pairing was on point! Willems & Willems Pinot Blanc 2017. 4th Course - Shiitake & Eggs - Simple dish but very tasty, paired with Southold Cellars 'Live Fast...' Pet Nat. 5th Course - Muscovy Duck/Buckwheat Pancake - Pancakes were good, but the duck had a bit too much vinegar to it, otherwise the texture of the duck was good. 6th Course - Dry Aged Akaushi Beef/Tater Tots - The beef was tender and cooked perfectly, the sauce was delicious too and the tater tots were a nice addition. 7th Course - Masa/Apple/Sweet Potato Tarte Tatin - Desert was delicious and had a pretty presentation. Quantity 5/5 - Very filling - 7 courses, you will not be leaving hungry with this menu. Ambience 3/5 - It's very cozy and casual, kind of a rustic feel. But the seating is limited and didn't feel very private - our table was probably one of the best, but all the tables are quite close together. Other than that was a good dining experience. Service 5/5 - Service was amazing, everyone was lovely and informative on the menu and wine selections. Spice 0/5 - Flavours not spice. Taste - 4/5 - Good but not amazing - some dishes were nice and flavourful but others were a little underwhelming. Honestly with the reviews expected a bit more, but I guess the menu isn't set and does change up so each experience will be different. The wine pairing was very good and a lot of thought has gone into matching each dish perfectly. Overall we had a good night and nice dining experience. This feels more of a casual date night or good for groups vibe as the seating is more open and close together. Staff are all awesome and attentive and the personalized menu is a super nice touch. Definitely a place to check out when in Austin!
Be the first to ReplyWho needs turkey ?!
Barley Swine Thanksgiving 2020 Review 11-26-2020 Who needs turkey ?! What a difference the sides from these guys made on the overall meal ! From a fairly pedestrian turkey dinner, these touches elevated our get together to an experience to remember in a very unusual year. Kudos to the pastry chef - the kolaches, spicy mushroom chorizo, and apple butter, the pig head parker house rolls, the pumpkin cream pie and the smoked chocolate pecan pie were all mouthwatering and I am not usually a sweets guy. Sweet potato gratin topped with a pecan crumble and a mushroom green bean dish topped with fried onions hit the spot, but of the more conventional but custom sides, I'd have to say I went more for the oyster andouille cornbread stuffing - for me, a main dish in itself. That and a little gravy... hmmm, tears me up thinking about it - time for a leftovers break ! Oh, yea, and we had some t u r k e y (HEB) too .... BTW, the tasty takeout Hibiscus Paloma 32oz cocktail was enjoyed by all, and contributed no "shading" to this review - we had it the night before ! Haha
Be the first to ReplySimply amazing!
The cocktails we had before our tasting were unique and very tasty. We came here for the Chefโs tasting menu, one with and one without the wine pairing. There are nine courses and every one was amazing! I never would have thought of combining those ingredients together, but the combinations of flavor and texture were pure genius. This is a restaurant that we will go to every time we are in Austin.
Be the first to ReplyBrilliant food and great pairings!
Barley Swine continues to serve some of the most creative and appealing food Austin. The current tasting menu is one of the best ever. Each course was beautifully prepared and presented and delicious. While there were a couple of favorites, the procession of flavors and their play on each other left them in a virtual tie. Service w as s superb. The wine pairings were lovely. Highly recommended!
Be the first to ReplyWonderful vegetarian take out family dinner
Barley Swine has become our dominant takeout restaurant. This week we ordered tge vegetarian meal. The watermelon, peanut and pickle salad was very good. The smoked sweet potatoes and butternut squash were very tasty as were the shish kebabs. The side potatoes were excellent as was the blue cornbread. And the sheet cake with candles pecans was outstanding. All together an entertaining and delightful meal. Portions are generally on the small side but quality and pre o station are excellent. Recommended!
