Believe the hype: one of the greats.
One of the greats in the West Village. Possibly the best roast chicken and potatoes in America. Crispy, juicy chicken, crispy, rosemary-scented potatoes. Salads, pastas, everything is good. And the cocktails and wine and well-priced, well chosen and well made.
Be the first to ReplyToo many restaurants around to waste your time here
This was our second time here and what a disappointment it was. The food was mediocre and the service was appalling. The only people that gave our table any attention were the gentleman pouring the water and who brought our food out. I wanted to add something to our meal but didn't get a chance to do so until about halfway through because the waiter never checked on us. Not like they were busy there were maybe half a dozen tables occupied but all the waiters just preferred talking to eachother. We had to catch a flight and I tried raising my hand to finally get his attention and both times him and the waiter he was talking to just blatantly ignored me. I ended up asking the lovely hostess for the check. Walking back to the subway all we could notice was all the other restaurants we should've gone to instead of this one
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Italian
With an amazing view of the Hudson River and New Jersey, modern interior, and amazing dishes, it offers quite an experience. We had a great dinner with clients for TravelDad.World, and the food was excellent. Modern take on classic Italian, but still preserving the traditional elements, it offers a fireworks for the palate and a feast for the eyes. TravelDad.World will definitely recommend this to our clients.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing service, thank you Desta!
Desta is amazing! I called to order drinks for a friend who was celebrating her birthday there, she took her time to take the order, confirm the guest and reservation, and make sure they had the drinks I wanted on the menu. So sweet and gracious throughout the process—thank you!

We were excited to have some good Italian pasta on our honeymoon while in New York but unfortunately this one fell flat for us. We ordered the focaccia & breadsticks to start with 2 glasses of wine and then followed up with sharing a bowl of the bolognese. We were so hungry & excited! We dove into the bowl & looked at one another and shared thoughts. Wayyyyyy over salted :( We kept trying and when the waiter who was lovely asked how we liked it we were honest and said it was heavily salted. He offered to replace the dish with a new one or let us try another dish. Looking back we should have but we felt so bad so we kept with it and tried but unfortunately couldn’t finish it between us. We shared the dish because we wanted to enjoy some of their lovely desserts. We decided to go with the strawberry rhubarb with gelato & is was mediocre at best. Kinda tasted like the blossoms we buy frozen from the grocery store and baked in the oven. They comped the dessert but really should have comped the pasta for us. Staff were very friendly & the place was alright
Be the first to ReplyExcellent meal!
We were visiting the Whitney Museum so my son checked out some places to eat and decided on Barbuto. I must say we were all shocked at how good and fresh the food was. I had the gnocchi with pesto, my wife had the smoked salmon pizza, my son had pasta with mushrooms and his wife had another pasta dish. First, you could taste the freshness as the pasta is handmade on site. Second, the flavors were sensational. I could not get over my gnocchi, usually a pretty standard dish but here the taste exploded on your palate. Beautiful restaurant with attentive but not overbearing service. If you're in the neighborhood (The Little Island is steps away) this is a for sure stop, you won't be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful, relaxing lunch at Barbuto
After visiting the Whitney Museum around the corner, my friend and I stopped for lunch at Barbuto. What a great choice! It was a quiet midweek mid-afternoon and we enjoyed the relaxed ambience of the dining room. Our server was friendly and professional and very accommodating. My wine was excellent, as was our food. Highly recommended!

We were so excited to snag a reservation here but the excitement didn’t last when we arrived. We had a 5pm reservation and showed up 1 minute early. They told us we had to wait but seated people without reservation. Once we were seated, we put in our order with no problem. The bread and breadsticks showed up promptly and were delicious. It took awhile for the 2 pizzas to arrive for apps, but they were well worth the wait. After sitting for over 30 minutes, we had to ask where our entrees were. They finally came out. The chicken was good and the potatoes were amazing. The seafood risotto was disgusting. It was similar to a dozen dinner that was warmed up and had no resemblance to risotto. Once our entrees arrived, our waitress became MIA. She never checked in so the issue with the risotto could be fixed. I ended up asking another waitress for our check. Our waitress returned with it and threw it on the table. She refused to interact with us. Will not be going back. There are way to many places to eat in the Big Apple that will appreciate our money.
Be the first to ReplyI want to believe Chef Waxman is better than this
We saw Chef Waxman on Top Chef masters and were so impressed with his style and demeanor we couldn't wait to try his restaurant! We had a 5pm reservation, that is when they opened. We were seated promptly; we ordered the focaccia and the 2 pizzas as apps to split. They came fairly quickly, and they were great! The Salmon pizza in particular was a standout. Unfortunately, at this point it began to fall apart. We waited over 30 minutes and no signs of our entrees. I finally asked the waitress and she reported we were the next ticket. She said the problem was everyone came at once so the kitchen got slammed. I was a bit surprised to hear this, I thought it was pretty common knowledge that if you seat every table at open you are going to slam the kitchen. The famous chicken came out and it was ok but dry. The risotto was quite frankly awful. Way undercooked, it was more like a rice dish, very dry and hardly any seafood. Completely lacking in flavor. The server was obviously not happy we asked (politely) about our food as she slammed the check on the table. Very unfortunate visit, I had much higher expectations
Be the first to ReplyOver-hyped and over priced
I’ve lived in the neighborhood many years and the original Barbuto was one of my favorites. The new location is such a disappointment! Took a friend here for her birthday. Snarky service from the waitress and a $17 charge for bread were bad enough but the entrees were a disaster. My friend ordered the truffle ravioli which came on a Salad Plate! Three ravioli $38 with sauce sloshing over the sides - the local diner would have more concern for presentation that this place. My mediocre linguine came with 8 tiny clams and maybe 3 oz of pasta. I’m accustomed to small portions in NYC -it’s usually fine for me - but this was just absurd and my friend left disappointed and hungry. Not one single thing could make this worth the $260 bill.

The best restaurant in the meatpacking district. The knowledgeable and friendly server set the tone for a fantastic meal. The space is industrial hip, but you can still carry on a conversation. theres a Nice cocktail and wine selection as well. We started with the house made focaccia and bread sticks ,meatball and house made gnocchi. Great for sharing and each bite was fabulous. The seasonal soft shell crab was perfect! The swordfish flaky and moist. The potatoes were crispy seasoned chunks that you could not stop eating. Unfortunately we had no room for desert. There will be a next time.
Be the first to ReplyOnly get the chicken
After dining at Barbuto 3 times since the new location opened I am sorry to say it really isn't that great. Last nights dinner was so salty it was barely edible. The octopus in the octopus salad was so overdone it was hard, not crunchy, hard. . My steak had a layer of salt on it. I couldn't taste the meat, only the salt. The potatoes though wonderfully crispy were also covered in salt. The pasta with shrimp and peas was bland or it could have been that my taste buds were off due to all of the excessive salt. In the past I have had the chicken and been satisfied. Stick to the chicken or ask for no salt. The waitstaff and host were extremely nice and very friendly.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Food in New Location; Service Missteps
Barbuto's new location in the West Village on the West Side Highway did not disappoint food-wise: Jonathan Waxman's signature dishes are as absolutely delicious as ever (that roast chicken verde!) as were the inventive and yummy appetizers (shout out to the gnochhi and tortellini). I am still smacking my lips remembering the sublime pistachio lemon cake for dessert. On the flip side, once seated we were forgotten by our waiter and it took eons to order drinks and place our order. The high ceiling and huge windows overlooking the river are handsome but the noise level is airport-runway level. Go later, as we did, and once the crowd has died down so does the noise and you can focus on the delectable food at this renewed New York jewel.
Be the first to ReplyLived up to expectations
Was really looking forward to dining here while on a trip to New York. Booked well ahead. Joined by a friend. Warmly greeted and seated. Enjoyed a cocktail and some olives. Then split the seasonal salad followed by the halibut and chestnut pasta. Everything was incredible, service, food and ambience. Prices reasonable. Highly recommend and will return when next in NY
Be the first to ReplyOverpriced, overpraised
We're not tourists. We've eaten in enough quality NY restaurants to know that sometimes you have to pay more to get a truly elevated dining experience. Despite his pedigree and repeated appearances on Top Chef, Jonathan Waxman's Barbuto doesn't measure up.
Barbuto is perhaps best known for its roast chicken, and it is decidedly a cut above the norm, delicately seasoned and juicy. But perfectly fine shouldn't cost $32. And it's unconscionable that it's another $10 for any sides.
The fettucine in a mushroom sauce was fresh and flavorful. But it was nothing you couldn't get elsewhere, and elsewhere it'd likely cost less than $26.
Overpriced beer and an aggressively priced wine list are also minuses. You'd think some of the money being made would go toward decor. The current iteration of
If you're in the area to head to the Whitney Museum, as we were, you can do better and for less.
Lunch shouldn't cost $120 with tip by the time you're done.
Perfected Pizza, Superb squid
Barbuto has perfected smoked salmon pizza, with a fragrant chewy/crispy/charred crust laden with a soft creamy cheese, an impressive amount of smoked salmon, and even more impressive, spoonfuls of roe. Crispy squid salad had the seafood steeped in lemon, battered and perfectly fried. The chicken was actually half a bird, likely brined and perfectly cooked. Generous and juicy. The ambiance is lively and loud, service was very professional, efficient, friendly. Everyone was enjoying the evening.

Evening started off a bit slow, once seated we received water immediately but took almost 15 minutes for our server to arrive. We were under a time crunch but in fairness to him once we communicated that he was on it. Food came out on time, overall was delicious... Kale salad and roast chicken were excellent, pizza also. Gnocchi sauce was good but thought the dumplings were a little dense. Pricing was fair for the food quality.
Be the first to ReplyGreat service and food
Great service and food. We shared a salad with finely chopped Brussel sprouts which, to a Brit, is an oddity but which was delicious. Another starter we shared was with shrimp and equally delicious. The piece de résistance, in my mind, was the carbonara. I have had many a Carbonara and without exception always have to add extra pepper and a hint more salt, but here I would change nothing! It was fabulous.

I am so sorry to see the place close. it has been in that location for years call to find out when it is closing.

Keep your eyes peeled....for the new location....splendid food...from Pasta to Monkfish.....to great veggies
Be the first to ReplyKale salad and chicken
Excellent flavor for both kale salad and chicken. Dishes are shareable sizes. Our chicken was super moist. Kale salad, subtly fabulous. Bread crumbs added flavor and kept salad from feeling like lawn clippings. Absolutely loved it. Service was good. Too loud to talk for 4 of us.
Sad to say "Good-Bye"
My group of friends had dinner here for our last meal together at one the the West Village's finest, coolest, places. We had eaten here many times throughout the years for holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc., so it will sadly be missed now that it is closing end of this month. We booked the kitchen chef's table and had a lovely & filling 4 course dinner. Drinks were delicious & the food impeccable as always. The entire staff was also personable, professional, & perfect throughout of dining experience.
I hope the rumors are true & they will be reopening soon!
Nice meal at the end of the High Line
Starting from the North end of the high line this was a nice treat 2 blocks after the end on the south side. Its busy make a Reservation! Steak salad and chicken both really good.
