Great place to be
Had a great time there. Great vibe, very good food and friendly service. A surprising combo of the north of Paris and Morocco. Recommending it.

Lovely team, fantastic food and Santa, just perfect! All the family enjoyed the beautiful restaurant and the lovely food!
Be the first to ReplyBlend of Moroccan and French Cuisine
Barbes is a unique restaurant, at least for this country, in that it blends French and Moroccan cuisine, and here is an excerpt from its website, "To call our establishment Barbès is to pay tribute to the vibrant essence of that neighborhood, a melting pot of Parisian and North African culture, cuisine, music & decor. With a menu that takes its lead from Morocco, North Africa’s culinary star, balanced with traditional French brasserie fare and a cozy atmosphere echoing the bistros of Paris (but with some really cool Moroccan touches)," that has been brough to Hoboken. My wife and I went here with our soon who we were visiting. We went there on a very busy Saturday night. I had the chicken Shawarma which I enjoyed as it was tasty and nice size. The service was well meaning, but disorganized as several wait staff came over to our table to ask us the same thing. There is not much of a waiting area in the front of the restaurant, so that when people are lined up waiting for a table, they at time left the front door open, letting a big draft into the restaurant, which was not pleasant as we were seated by the door. They should think about putting in a vestibule.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service
We were so looking forward to this place as I am both French and Moroccan and recently moved to New Jersey -- and just came back from Morocco. The service is extremely poor and frankly arrogant (not Moroccan at all). We unfortunately have to concur with the rest of the recent super negative comments here, and it makes me sad to say but it's on point. Don't go there if you are going with someone new and need a smooth experience. You will have some bad surprises. The major difference with Morocco or France is that here in the US, we're expected to give 18%. I will never give 18% in this context.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service and poor food
I booked the place for my anniversary brunch with my wife and toddler, after hearing about Barbes ambience, food and service. Unfortunately, service was very poor right from coffee to entree to unprofessional waitstaff I will not be returning here. They brought our coffee but forgot to bring the sweetener and milk till the coffee got cold. Forgot to bring an entire Entree and when my wife asked the waiter got annoyed at her and tried to reach her about how to order food in a restaurant by saying “the way it works in restaurants…”. Not the experience that we expected at all Also, food wasn’t particularly good. The pita was rubbery and hard
Be the first to ReplyNot a great experience
Service is not the good kind of French and we found a long black hair on our desert. The food was decent but not a great experience.
Be the first to ReplyHORRIBLE MANAGER
ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE MANAGER !!!! The manager at this place should definitely be replaced to say the least ...
When I made the reservation I requested a table near the live music ... NOT ON TOP OF IT .. he gave us a table literally on top of the music basically and near by he front door when it's 32 degrees outside and we would. freeze every time someone openers the door . We than requested the table behind that and he said NO AND SAID HE WAS BUSY TONIGHT .. well he made ABSOLUTELY NOOOOOOOOOOOO EFFORT to accommodate us when we clearly stated we were returning customers. He than gives us a mediocre table that BARELY fit one person. And their dinner so I don't even have to tell you how tight it was to fit two people and their drinks , appetizers and dinners in such table . NOT to mention the fact my coat was in the floor because there was just no other place to put it once we didn't even have an extra chair . So after he heard me telling my boyfriend that I was going to update my review on Yelp than all of a sudden the table we requested was available . But I was already seated and annoyed with the LACK of customer service .. so I stayed at my miserable table that barely had enough room for one person , let alone 2 with appetizers and dinner and drinks .
The food in the place is really good and unique and our waiter and bartender who were the very best were trying so hard to make up for the manager's poor and CRAPY customer service . Even tho they were really goood and the food in the place is also great , nothing can make up for the extremely poor customer service from the manager WHO MADE ABSOLUTELY NOOOOO EFFORT. To accommodate us .. ..
OHHH and that table we requested was actually empty for the ENTIRE 2 hours and 45 minutes we were there .. see the table in pictures as well as my coat on the floor under the miserable table he provided us with ... that barely fit our dinner . NOT really sure if I will return with such POOR management who made absolutely NO effort to help us .... Sad.. just SAD because it was a special occasion for us ... so what a WASTE of my outfit , hair , time and my boyfriend's money .... If you are looking for a great atmosphere and positive vibe .. GO ELSEWHERE !!!!!
Food matched service
Weekday night at a local place to avoid crowds, chicken and almond appetizer, salmon with a great mustard sauce, and shrimp over couscous, and dessert were all great. Service was VERY attentive (looked like training a new waiter).

I went with friends who go often, and so they made reservations... best to reserve as they are crowded. Plenty of outdoor seating. The staff was so sweet. Service was not perfect, but it was homey and well-intentioned. I am not a big wine fan, but the choices were great and we had a few glasses of wine. Our table ordered clams, fish, and salads. Oh my, and those french fries.......... my oh my!!!!! Chocolate mousse for dessertr... I didn't care for..... Loved it !!!!
Be the first to Reply45min to get a drink, 120min to get the meal - and we had a reservation!
During COVID everything is more complicated, we understand that.
Two weeks ago the restaurant reopened with few tables outside on the curbside and allowed to reserve tables on Resy.com.
So we did, reservation for 4 satuday night for dinner.
19:00 We get seated fast, the first waiter asks us if we wanted tap water and we said yes, 10min later another waiter same question, 15min later the owner comes with the same request.
19:25 We get water and order drinks and food
19:45 We get the drinks (out of 4 ordered 1 was good, the other 3 were with melted ice to tasted like water)
20:15 We order wine (safest choice) and asked for some bread or something to snack.
20:45 We get the meal (4 entrees) the waiter apologized but did not bring any bread or anything in the meantime.
The food was good but the waiting time unacceptable (especially with reservation and few tables to serve)!
At the end the waiter brought us a free dessert (sort of melted ice cream with some fried dough). 1 portion for the 4 of us - that was kind and fairly good!
Total of the bill 110$ excluding tips and taxes!
A touch of exotic elegance
We went to this restaurant due to a recommendation, and we were overwhelmed from inception. First, the service provided by Victoria was
exceptional. She was very engaging and a conversationalist.
As appetizers we ordered an artichoke with dip, as well as pastries called briouats, and hummus. For entrees, we ordered lamb chops, a t-bone steak and a filet mignon. The only word that comes to mind is "wow".
For dessert we had a pastilla, which was heavenly. What a phenomenal experience!
Highly recommend

Arabesque to Barbes
We’ve enjoyed dining at Arabesque in NYC for many years, and we were thrilled to learn “Barbes”, their new restaurant, was opening in Hoboken. The delicious Couscous Royal would now be closer to home!
We went there yesterday for lunch...and, Oh!, the horror...no couscous at lunch time! It’s only served in the evening. But we didn’t return home hungry. The lamb brochette was superb, as were the mussels marinière. Best of all, the service is extremely friendly. Loved the painted wall with Brigitte Bardot and JP Belmondo wearing Fez hats!
So, we’ll return soon to enjoy a Couscous Royal...for dinner!
Fun and Friendly Dining Experience
After a day in the city during a rainy day, we were excited to eat a warm, delicious dinner. And that we did. Barbès offers a wide array of French and traditional Moroccan dishes. The tagine is the warm, delicious meal we all needed. It is served in a traditional earthenware pot, and contains a plethora of flavors. The steak au poivre is a rich, delicious bite. Usually, we do not order dessert, but we decided to splurge and try a traditional Moroccan dessert, and we’re glad we did. The pastilla is one of the best desserts I’ve ever had, with such different and delightful flavors. The best part of the night was the staff. From our server to the friendly host, everyone was so welcoming and made us feel like family. We will definitely be back and I recommend you try it out too.
Be the first to ReplyNice atmosphere
The atmosphere is great, and on Tuesday/Thursday, the restaurant also provides special events (e.g., dancing). The food is a fusion of Moroccan, South African, and French foods - I like the food, but am not sure if the food is authentic.
Be the first to ReplyDefinitely average
Moroccan not, rather some sort of Mediterranean mashup. Crowded and noisy definitely and uncomfortably tight seating as well. Food was bland with garlic as the overwhelming flavor. Not a place I would go to again, sorry.
Be the first to ReplyNot great, disappointed after waiting a while to go!
Came here for dinner with friends after wanting to come for quite some time. I should have taken the blank stares I received at the hostess stand when I walked in as a sign.
I checked in for my reservation, got a drink while waiting for friends at the bar which seemed to be complete chaos. One bartender on a busy Saturday night.
When we were ready to sit, I returned to the hostess stand and was met with more blank stares about my party/reservation until the manager came over and pointed us to our table.
The four of us were seated at a pretty small round table. While looking over the menu, we placed a drink order only to have someone else come by to take drink orders two minutes later. We told them we had ordered from someone else so they went to check on them only to then have them served by someone completely different.
We then ordered a bottle of wine, had it presented to us only for the server to realize there were no wine glasses on the table. Rather than get the glasses herself, the sever asked several people to get get the glasses while she stood there awkwardly with the bottle of wine
Our three appetizers - hummus, shrimp and mussels - arrived however there was BARELY any room for the plates on the table and nothing was being cleared. I started using a nearby table as a place to put things that should have been taken away. The shrimp was over cooked and chewy and the hummus was served without pita or bread or anything. I had to ask three times for a side of pita or bread or something to be brought over. And in the end, the hummus had no taste.
Our meals came - two of us ordered two different kind of tangines and the sever had no idea what was in each tangine so I was served the wrong one and we had to do a quick plate switch.
Another member of our party was drinking Chardonnay ordered a second glass once our meals were served. When she received it, she asked the server if she was sure it was chardonnay because it tasted different. One of our 8 different servers proceeded to go get the bottle of wine and show it to her to prove it was chardonnay, which was so rude and unprofessional.
Our meals were fine, the lamb tangine had next-to-no-taste. My fish tangine was good until I had an onion from the mixture with one of the foulest tastes and smells ever. Sort of tasted like it had marinated in soda and was fizzy.
Overall, the vibe of this restaurant felt very chaotic - lots of people moving around but not doing anything. I sincerely still have no idea who our server was. I don’t know that I’ll be back.
