🤢 2/5 - I came here for my birthday yesterday and left quite

I came here for my birthday yesterday and left quite disappointed. I really wanted to like it as I love watching Dominique Crenn cook in competitions. I think the problem was expectations.First, the Comptoir experience says "The pescatarian menu will be cooked by our chef team, live at the counter." This made me think we were going to be sitting chefs counter style, but the dishes are cooked in the Atelier Crenn kitchen and then the chef will bring the dishes out in front of you to finish plating or saucing. Second, you are required to get a beverage pairing, wine or non-alcoholic. I think we only got like two or three wines in the pairings. One was a terrible sake that the sommelier said he wasn't fond of, but thought would pair well with the bao dish. When I didn't finish it, I asked for it to be taken away and nothing was said to me. No, oh not for you? I did get a kombucha that was absolutely delicious. Maybe if the sake didn't taste like soy sauce to me, I wouldn't have wished we got all wines instead. Or wish I had been asked if I disliked it and wanted a different drink instead. Third, I was expecting to be asked if we were there for a special occasion. When we went to Acquerello last year, we were asked and I ended up with a birthday card and a birthday dessert. At Bar Crenn, we were never asked. I wonder if they knew it was my birthday, if we would have gotten better service. We were seated in the middle between two other couples and it felt like the other couples got more attention and we were looked over. The waiter and the sommelier did include us as long as it was a question they had already asked another couple. Aside from expectations, I felt like there was an air of arrogance. The waiter and sommelier were bragging about the food they received from the kitchen compared to other restaurants they had worked. There are no accommodations for dietary restrictions. Yes, they tell you this beforehand, but as a result, one of the other diners ate tomatoes and cantaloupe despite not liking them. The dishes were good but he came to the conclusion he must not like tomatoes. I felt the same way about the cheese course, tho I did not like the cheese. Also, apparently the average rating on the cheese course is 2-3, but the kitchen continues to serve it. The boyfriend also does not like tomatoes and he found the tomato tart delicious but then was also served a tomato soda that he disliked. Ironically, the tomato soda was the only thing they kept from the menu of someone that came from Eleven Madison Park (name drop) to help with the non-alcoholic pairings. There was also a point in the night where they had us choose knives to use. These knives come from someone who believes in sustainability and has a 8 year wait-time. It was an interesting tidbit but also just contributed to the whole experience feeling like I was supposed to be there to fangirl the restaurant versus it being about the customer and what they want. The food dishes were good, but I found I could kind of take it or leave it. Dishes I remember were the tomato tart, the crab tacos, the bao, abalone au poivre, amberjack. The crab tacos were amazing but were they the best tacos I've ever had? No. And that's kind of how I felt about the other dishes more or less. I think maybe the lesson to be taken is to never sit bar counter style at a Michelin star restaurant, especially if you are expecting to be doted on for your birthday.
