my wife and i popped in here spur of moment for a little nostalgia trip. used to sit at the bar for pasta tasting menu, routinely. we were younger with less experienced pallates but definitely poorer than we are today. relevant setup. $120 + $80 for wine pairing 5 pasta courses + sorbet + dessert portions were less than 1/2 size of regular pastas. 3 small raviolis of ricotta with heavy butter. fair squid ink spaghettini with crab. nice abundant lump crab but in the end a silly dish cause crab doesn't integrate into pasta or sauce. sauce was oniony then squab liver ravioli. 3 of them. unctuous. but minuscule garganelli with mushroom. the shrooms were outstanding. sauce was basically just butter. and grana padano which is kinda life too short for that. but overall this was the best course then tag bolognese which was super lame. no ragu. just like ground meat. dessert was the high point. olive oil gelato with olive oil cake topped with olive oil and maldon. totally outasite. value poor. portions lame. not happy. won't be back. end of the era and was already uncomfortable continuing to patronize the place given the former proprietor is a rapist

4 of us were celebrating our birthdays in the city. We chose Babbo because it seemed like a nice place to go to dinner and treat ourselves. They had a menu that offered an international woman's day bottle of wine for what appeared to be $50.00 so we gave it a try. See photo below. When bill arrived, they charged us $195 for a bottle of wine because they charged us by the ounce!!!! Ridiculous. Unclear. Manager said tough luck. A small gesture on the bill would have gone along way here. Just check the menu before you make same mistake we made. Place was pretty. Food was ok. Sommelier was condescending. Smallest 2nd floor bathroom I've ever seen. Very loud. There are better choices in the city for the price point.

My dad took me to Babbo when he was in town because it was one of his favorites when he lived in the city in the early 2000s! It was incredibly classy and my favorite part was the super knowledgable sommelier. The wine list was extensive and the sommelier was incredibly helpful in educating us about our options. We got tons of food, lots of appetizers, a salad, and then pasta for me. This was a little while ago so I can't fully recall what I got, but I remember really enjoying the food! Its a Greenwich Village staple and has kept up the quality of its food and service for so long, definitely worth a try at least once if you're in the city.

Be the first to ReplyTo start, the food is excellent.
It is what you would expect from fine dining experience. What separates these establishments is the overall experience. That is where Babbo falls short. We felt rushed from the moment we sat down, we almost felt as if they over booked and were rushing us out. As we made clear from our pace, we wanted to slow things down and enjoy the evening. To be clear, our expectation wasn't to spend all night, but 2 or 2.5 hours which is reasonable for 3 people in my view. Additionally, the volume and selection of music was inappropriate. It wasn't blasting but it was noticeable and unpleasant selection. I really liked the food but the overall experience fell short. This was my third and last visit here. There are too other better choices to return here..

The lamb tongue was good, but we had to send back the lobster spaghetttoni. The lobster pieces were overcooked and NOT fresh. The sauce also too thick Ambiance. The place was bombarded w exceptionally loud disco "music", 108 dbm,It affected the mood and the appetite. We requested to be seated at a quieter spot but the request was NOT honored. They attempted to lower the noise, but was still way too loud. Our waiter tried his best to mitigate the situation and was attentive . The management spoiled our evening by ignoring our request!
Be the first to ReplyMy friend booked a table for 5 people 1 month ago,
My friend booked a table for 5 people 1 month ago, specifically requesting the 7 fishes menu for Christmas Eve. When we arrived at the restaurant we discovered that the menu had not been reserved for us, that it was finished (at 8 pm, dinner time?!) , but that we could take dishes from the menu that were the same as the fixed price menu. Are you kidding us? So the dishes were there and the menu was not finished, it was finished at the fixed price. What a joke! We asked for explanations first to the waiter who proposed us the 375 dollars menu instead of 7 fishes menu at 135 (what?!) and then to the manager: really unpleasant, rude staff who invented a thousand excuses without logic (the menu was finished but the dishes were available on the menu, we had to pay a fee - never mentioned- to reserve the fixed menu etc.). No fee was mentioned on the website to reserve the 7 fishes menu, the restaurant called 2 times to confirm the reservation and did not say anything about this fee, despite the fact that we have requested the 7 fishes menu also over the phone. We felt scammed. Since it was Christmas Eve we stayed to have dinner because it was too late to change restaurant: food was disgusting, not fresh and overpriced, 2 people of my group had food poisoning that night, tables were to close, I could hear also whispers from the table behind me! Very rude staff. Never again. Do yourself a favor and don't go, spend your money somewhere else.
Be the first to ReplyDon't want to be sanctimonious, but i have eaten here close
Don't want to be sanctimonious, but i have eaten here close to 100 times (live in the WV and either get delivery or eat out - every night), and tonight was the worst dining experience of my life. Food is always great, but Nico (I think the manager), is a joke. He is really smug and dismissive. A lot of layers here, but the only one worth commenting on is that my wife has a severe nut allergy (that we informed the restaurant about, and they acknowledged), but they still served her a dessert with nuts as part of the Christmas Eve 7 fish tasting menu (which we had to fight to get, despite having a 5:30 reservation with two 3 year olds that I called about 3 times to be sure no issues and that we would get the tasting menu). A server came rushing out about 5 minutes after we got the dessert to inform us it had nuts (good thing - my wife only ate half of it - absurd). When we expressed this to Nico, he said, "you want to talk about this outside?" I said "are you kidding me?" Bastianich - Fire this bozo. This negligent service is unacceptable.

I first came to this restaurant shortly after it opened so probably around 1999 or so. I've been coming back occasionally since then. It deserves 5 stars just for the consistency of the food and service over the years. There are things to quibble about - the music is not great, the food is probably not the absolute best you can get in NYC, it's pretty touristy - but there's a reason it's been around for so long.

it's just very surprising that when the owner, Joe Bastianich, has gone on record decrying the use of "truffle" oil, his latest chef at Babbo has seen fit to ruin at least six dishes on the menu with some of that fake-truffle chemical fart gas. Blech! too bad because some of those dishes sounded delicious without it.

Food: 5/5 | Service: 5/5 | Experience: 5/5Babbo is the ideal spot for a special occasion, and they made my birthday dinner incredibly memorable. When we first arrived, I was immediately struck by how beautiful the interior of the restaurant was. We were greeted by the hosts, who offered to take our coats and had us seated almost as soon as we gave our names for the reservation, despite us being a bit early. The highlights of our meal were the grilled octopus (one of the most gorgeous plates of food I've ever consumed), the whole baked branzino, and the ravioli with pear and pecorino. For dessert, I ordered the olive oil cake, which I'd built up my hopes up around considering all of the hype that it's received; it was definitely a bit drier than I expected, but the "happy birthday" message in chocolate sauce around the rim of the plate more than made up for it. I would opt for another dessert choice next time, but I certainly hope to be back given the excellent overall quality of the food, and the service and ambience to match.Babbo is definitely a must-try!

Food quality has taken a nosedive. Kudos though to the very congenial staff.
Be the first to ReplyCame here for my 30th birthday dinner three years ago and
Came here for my 30th birthday dinner three years ago and the food was phenomenal. I didn't like that they wouldn't allow my birthday balloons at the table. It was only two the 3 & 0. I also didn't like the tiny table they squashed my party of 5 at. We were sat in a corner upstairs. The place was packed and bustling. It was loud , very dimly lit. I didn't appreciate the servers initial pushiness and pretentiousness. Half my party were foodies like me and the other half are chicken nugget and fries type people. So initially we didn't order a lot as I was trying to explain things to the ignorant. The server seemed disgusted and was like "that's it". I was too overjoyed to let it ruin my night. But it wasn't unnoticed by my entire party. To start we got the grilled octopus. It was excellent. I've only had octopus one other time and it was a rubbery mess. This was tender. The texture was a like a firm scallop. A nice char from the grill, acidity and nice hit of spice from the limoncello vinaigrette. We also got the Buffalo mozzarella with heirloom tomatoes. The cheese was tangy and rich and worth the premium. The tomatoes were perfectly ripe, slightly sweet but sharp. They gave us complimentary dish of garbanzo beans with crusty bread. That too was delicious. Not sure what it was seasoned with but it was earthy and flavorful. For mains we got the lobster spaghettini, grilled ribeye for two, gnocchi with oxtails, duck and scallops. The spaghettini was exceptional, Al dente pasta, well cooked lobster. I'm not one who likes seafood with red sauces. But the sauce had a nice sweetness, spiciness and acidity. It was simple but delicious. The gnocchi was pillowy soft and the oxtails well seasoned and tasty. I was disappointed in the ribeye it came with a side of fingerling potatoes. The potatoes were super greasy. The ribeye SUPER fatty. Like they did not trim the steak well or the left it on purpose to beef up the the size. They cut the steak for us which was a nice gesture. But for $140 I've had way better ribeye for cheaper and potatoes. The duck was good. It came with mission figs and a few Brussels sprouts. The leg and thigh was confit and the breast seemed pan fried. The skin on the breast was crispy how I like it. The figs added a nice sweetness. The scallops were served with fregula. They were fresh and perfectly cooked. The fregula was nutty and a great accompaniment. The Calabrian chiles added a subtle heat and rounded out the other notes in the dish. For dessert we got the chocolate & pistachio semifreddo, chocolate hazelnut cake with hazelnut gelato and the olive oil cake with gelato. All of the desserts were amazing. They poured olive oil on the cake and gelato at the table. It wasn't as savory as I thought it was going to be. The cake was moist and bursting with the taste of olive oil. The semifreddo was delectable. Chocolate and pistachio make a great combination. It was light, not too sweet and honestly my favorite dessert of the three. Another great combo chocolate and hazelnut. The cake was rich but not heavy. The gelato was creamy, smooth and delicious. The portion size with the exception of the duck, scallops and ribeye were small. But it's to be expected with a restaurant of this caliber. The cocktails weren't of much interest. I had a Manhattan it was well made. We did get a bottle of rosé that was exceptional. Other members got drinks neat or on the rocks. The service wasn't bad. It was kind of sterile like a hospital. Not really as warm and friendly as I would've liked. But I would definitely dine again. Oh and how can I forget very expensive, but worth the splurge!!!
Be the first to ReplyOverall was good not great.
If you are looking for some basic amazing pasta this place is not it. It has a super cute vibe and the hostess and bar tender was super nice. Our server was not so much, limited insights into the menu, and rarely saw him. Very snooty. We got the Buffalo mozzarella appetizer and it was very good. We then got the gnocchi which honestly was terrible. The sauce is watery and the honey is overwhelming. None of it went together IMO. Do not get it. We also got the bolognese which was good but nothing spectacular, had very little meat. The short rib was amazing! The truffle polenta was strong but I love truffle taste. We also got the white and milk chocolate gelato dessert and it was amazing as well. For the price the quality was inconsistent and service was not great.
Be the first to ReplyOur favorite restaurant! but the service was so bad last
Our favorite restaurant! but the service was so bad last night that we had to actually leave the restaurant. My husbands only request of me was to go to NY and go to Babbo. We arrived and were seated at our table with no menus, 10 minutes later a gentleman comes with the menus. We were planning on spending well over a $100 dollars a bottle of wine, but again know one ever came to our table. We called over the sommelier who did bring us a cocktail we expressed our concern she came back with a piece of paper and said since you are in a rush which we were not, she would take our order. Then a waitress seemed to be sent over and took our order and never came back. The person bringing the food from kitchen gave us more attention. We called over the manager and complained and he said he would take care of us but he never came back or sent anyone. We had our Appetizers with no one coming over to offer drinks etc. We were the invisible table. We then called over the manager again and said you never came back or sent anyone. We want the check which he delivered and it was $100 which my husband handed over his credits card, but I went and talked to the other manager at the front desk and he seemed shocked at this treatment and said he and the other man who ignored us were both managers. I questioned him again as to why he never came back he said I saw you had an appetizer delivered I guess we should have eaten this without a drink. The other manager said he was not charging us. I know im rambling but now we know longer have a favorite New York restaurant we are so disappointed.

Omg. I loved this place. I've been coming here for at least 15 years every now an then. If I had to have a last meal this place would be it. The servers were very scattered. The music too loud to talk and the food ok at best. My black pasta was warm at best. Its so sad how this place has fallen. Oh Mario where are you? There are way better places, so sad to say.

Be the first to ReplyProfessional local couple stopping by for a drink / dessert
Professional local couple stopping by for a drink / dessert on a Friday evening around 8 tonight.(W/out reservations)Arrived to a bustling evening crowd, lots of energy, warm environment. Noticed four empty bar seats upon arrival. Before seating the bartender asked us to double check with the hostess first but assured us he was almost certain two seats could be ours. Greeted the first hostess and passed to her we wanted to get a drink and dessert. She was quickly accommodating to our request. Then the gentleman host chimed in and asked if we'd be dining. "No, a quick dessert and drinks" we replied. "Sorry, you can only sit if you're eating." I understand maxing out capacity but you never know who your clientele are nor if others will walk in to fill those bar seats. This establishment has been on my list to visit for years in the neighborhood and the demeanor, attitude, and way the host passed his decision was extremely off putting. I'm saddened we won't attempt to try it again.
Be the first to ReplyBabbo is always top notch.
Plan ahead and make a reservation well in advance. We usually go for the pasta tasting menu with wine pairing so we get to taste lots of variety. The squid ink pasta seems to always be a staple and is a favorite, but this time, the sunchoke ravioli and the beef cheek pastas really stole the show. Both were super rich and paired fantastically with the red wines chosen by our sommelier. I would happily order either one of those again. The final pasta was the pasta bolognese which was good but a bit boring compared to the rest. Desserts were tasty. We left extremely satisfied and will definitely be back again.

The quality has really gone down hill over the last few years. What was once the place where I had some of the most memorable meals of my life has become just OK. Nothing tastes as good and most things were either very salty or under seasoned. Even the olive oil gelato is missing something that it once had. I'm sorry to be leaving hubs review.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing authentic Italian food.
I went here on a Friday night and sat upstairs. All the waiters were extremely helpful in the wine and food pairings. We had the mozzarella (chess kiss), octopus, fazzoletti, and gargenelli. Favorites were definitely octopus and gargenelli. Will be back for sure!

What a great restaurant!Came to NY for a birthday party and this was where our dinner was. The cutest little place that is bigger than it looks! Walk in to a cozy, intimate style Italian restaurant with amazing staff and servers! The only thing I will nit-pick is the sommelier we had should not work at the restaurant... the least experienced som I have ever seen and he did not know his wines... but everything else so amazing, so can't complain too much! The food was unbelievable. Amazing presentations, flavor, everything was over the top.For starters the little neck clams were amazing! The sauce was so delicious and amazing for dipping! Our favorite pasta dish was the Cacio e Pepe Ravioli. The flavor on this was unreal. Slightly sweet? This dish was devoured!! The beef cheek ravioli was also a killer dish too! Never had beef cheek so tender! The entrees were also amazing with the seared tuna being the star of the show! Gorgeous presentation and seared to perfection. Desserts were also amazing, but you almost don't even need them with all the amazing savory dishes! Panna Cotta was super amazing and very light though so this was the perfect finishing dish.Overall amazing place and really looking forward to coming back here!
