Amazing Dinner at Babbo
Fabulous! let's start with that. My husband and I went here on a Thursday night for dinner. Made a reservation well in advance for 7:30 pm. Seemed quiet at that time but filled up fast by 8:00. I had the best glass of white wine i have ever had (not cheap though, $32.00 for one glass) but it was worth the price. we started with burrata topped with a small dollop of caviar. it was amazing; melted in your mouth and he caviar gave it just the right hint of saltiness. I ordered the egg raviolo; never had that before and have always wanted to try it; came with a sage brown butter sauce and it was perfectly cooked. My husband had the rabbit bolognese papardelle. He loved it. Said it was one of the best pasta plates he has ever had. we shared the pistachio semi freddo for dessert; we don't usually order desert but decided to splurge and so happy we did. it was not only gorgeous to look at but so delicious. not too sweet. The service is definitely 5 start; very attentive but very discreet also. the total cost was about $300 but for a special night, well worth it.

My friend booked a table for 5 people 1 month ago, specifically requesting the 7 fishes menu for Christmas Eve. When we arrived at the restaurant we discovered that the menu had not been reserved for us, that it was finished (at 8 pm, dinner time?!) , but that we could take dishes from the menu that were the same as the fixed price menu. Are you kidding us? So the dishes were there and the menu was not finished, it was finished at the fixed price. What a joke! We asked for explanations first to the waiter who proposed us the 375 dollars menu instead of 7 fishes menu at 135 (what?!) and then to the manager: really unpleasant, rude staff who invented a thousand excuses without logic (the menu was finished but the dishes were available on the menu, we had to pay a fee - never mentioned- to reserve the fixed menu etc.). No fee was mentioned on the website to reserve the 7 fishes menu, the restaurant called 2 times to confirm the reservation and did not say anything about this fee, despite the fact that we have requested the 7 fishes menu also over the phone. We felt scammed. Since it was Christmas Eve we stayed to have dinner because it was too late to change restaurant: food was disgusting, not fresh and overpriced, 2 people of my group had food poisoning that night, tables were to close, I could hear also whispers from the table behind me! Very rude staff. Never again. Do yourself a favor and don’t go, spend your money somewhere else.

Excellent wine list. Attentive and courteous staff. However, though the menu sounds amazing, the food was just “good” (we had the beef carpaccio, gnocchi Gorgonzola and Short ribs). And the other reviews about the 90s music are spot on. Loud and not at all appropriate for the atmosphere. I expected more.

Such a lovely place with amazing food! Prices could bite a little bit, but it is worth it. The staff is also super nice. If you decide to go here, definitely take the ricotta cheesecake, because it is the best cheesecake I have ever had!

My wife and I are very disappointed with the way we were treated. We have lived in Manhattan since 1995 and been to Babbo at least a dozen times over the past 20 years. Most of the time we have been seated upstairs and enjoyed lovely meals, oftentimes trying the pasta or regular tasting menu along with the wine pairings. Overall, very memorable experiences. This time was different. Our table wasn’t ready when we arrived, with the host ‘pretending’ he could not find our reservation despite showing him the confirmation email on my smartphone. We were squeezed into a table in a narrow corridor — a true ‘no-man’s land’ next to the kitchen. The music was playing so loudly that we could not hear what the restaurant staff was saying. We politely asked if we could be seated upstairs and, without even checking availability, they told us “…that is not possible.” We asked if they could turn the music down a bit so we could hear the staff — and each other — but were told “…that’s how the owner likes it.” After a few minutes, we decided that trying to reason with the staff was a lost cause, so we stood up and left. It’s the only time in my life that I have left a restaurant before being presented with the menus. We walked 5 minutes and had a lovely meal at Gotham on 12th Street — tasty, creative food, open and airy environment, fresh new decor, attentive staff and a helpful Somelier. It is sad to see how Babbo, what used to be a special place where we enjoyed many wonderful meals with family and friends, has turned into an over-crowded, impossibly loud and dingy place with tone-deaf staff and awful service. With so many great restaurants in NYC, we will not be wasting our time or money at Babbo.
Be the first to ReplyAmazing food and service but why the loud rock music?
We had the pasta tasting with the Riserva Selection of wines which all four of us thought was amazing. The black spaghetti was so flavorful with balanced flavors of crab and chilis. I also really liked the garganelli (black truffle pesto) - the mushrooms had a slight resistance to the bite with big flavors. So yummy! My friends thought the the pappardelle bolognese was the best. And, of course, the pasta was perfectly prepared al dente. Each dish was beautifully presented, maybe 6 bites to each plate. There were a series of 5 plates for each of us. Plenty of food. After the meal we had what I believe was a raspberry sorbet as a palate cleanser. Excellent! We had several desserts including the olive oil cake. Unfortunately at that point I was too full to have more than small tastes but they were excellent as well. The pairing of the wines with the food was spot on. At each turn the sommelier talked us through the wines and the tastes that we could expect. We thought the sommelier was a great communicator - not too much, not too little - and very enthusiastic. The service was superb, everything I would expect from Babbo. We were attended to and never rushed. Excellent at every step. We did have one big problem: the music. The music that was played over the speakers was 70's rock, sometimes even hard rock. It was so loud that a couple of times we could hardly hear the sommelier. We asked the waiter and the sommelier if it could be turned down and they said they would do what they could. But it did not improve. Finally I got up and walked downstairs to talk to the manager. He told me that this style of music was preferred by the owner (meaning he could/would not change it) but he would see what he could do about the volume. Maybe it was turned down a little? I am not sure, but it definitely cast a shadow over the evening. The last time we were there I do not recall it being such a problem. Loud, head banging music is not what I want to hear when I am having a lovely dinner at Babbo. Our guests were European and it was even harder for them. We had to yell to hear each other during regular conversation which was awkward. This aspect of our evening was so disappointing, especially since no one seemed to be able to help us. None of us could understand why this was such a problem since it is so easily fixable. I would have given it 5 stars except for the music. Because of this I doubt we would return.

My favorite Italian restaurant in the US. So delicious! I dream about their pastas. Don’t come here if you want Americanized Italian food. I’m a foodie who has traveled the world and lived in the foodie-centric SF Bay Area. This is authentic, real deal Italian that has never disappointed. I have been here many times and come here every time I am in New York. Most recently I had their Vongole pasta and their olive oil cake. Both superb. We were also recommended an excellent wine from Sardinia. The sommelier was very passionate and the service excellent. Batali I is no longer involved in the restaurant. The Bastianich’s now own and run the restaurant and I am very impressed with how they have maintained the quality.

First let me say….”shame on us” for not reading the reviews before returning to one of our favorite restaurants in NYC. Upon opening the door we were hit with very loud punk rock music. It completely changed our mood for the evening as we could not hear the servers or each other and it seemed to get louder as we sat there. The food was fine an$ the drinks were way overpriced….$45 for scotch…..both of which we would tolerate if we actually could enjoy our evening. Both upstairs and downstairs were equally loud. I don’t understand the logic of the music but it may be to speed up the turns of the tables as we dropped an easy $600 for 4 and were gone in 75 minutes. No dessert for us….we went to a place down the street so we could chat and enjoy a drink and dessert. Really not a good experience. That said, the place was packed….so who knows. Maybe extremely loud music and expensive food draws a different crowd. This will be our last meal at Babbo.

I had been to Babbo many times before the pandemic; but this was my first experience back since 2019. Friends brought me here to celebrate a milestone birthday. I had always enjoyed dinning here and was looking forward to my return. I won't be going back! The food ranged from excellent (the octopus) to poor (my wife's SPAGHETTONI with 1 Pound Lobster and Sweet Garlic Tomato Sauce tasted like something you opened from a can of Chef Boyardee). In fairness, our friends who took us, liked the food better than we did; and I have no complaints about the service which was first rate. What none of us liked, however, was ACDC blaring from the speakers so that any pretense of conversation would be impossible. We complained vociferously many times but the attitude of management was basically GFY! In reading prior reviews before writing my own, management's attitude towards noise complaints is consistent. They don't give a damn! Living in NYC, there are plenty of fish in the sea. Throw this fish back. There are too many other and better choices to choose from.
Be the first to ReplyBoring and a guest check to miss.
Our first visit, but our host had been there many times, years before and enjoyed it. Our surprise was how tasteless and bland EVERYTHING was and expensive. This restaurant is living on old reviews. Food to miss unless your tastebuds don’t exist. Service was great until they noticed we didn’t like it, then they wanted us gone. Just because it’s packed doesn't mean it’s good, just popular like spam.

As close to a perfect dining experience as you can get. Been here a dozen times over the years it’s better. Biggest italian wine list (read ‘book’) that I’ve seen. Being a California / French wine snob the sommelier picked a great ‘pinot’ that beats all. Veal Milanese with micro bread stick crust? Awesome! 200 layer lasagna? A staple offering for years and still… awesome. Desserts should come wearing ribbons. Service, bistro vibe busy as all get out you better get a reservation at t-30 days or u won’t get in.

If you prefer your dinner without blaring rock/rap music then maybe pick another restaurant. The service and food were great (thank you Vincent!) but it is a very different vibe from when we last visited. We ate early (6.15) and it was crowded. Downstairs has a bar feel and upstairs is more traditional dining, but the music upstairs was so loud it spoiled the experience. 6 pm may be the new 8 pm in NYC but we didn't sign up for a night club atmosphere. And don't order lasagna if you are hungry - it was a tiny sliver - albeit delicious.
Be the first to ReplyGreat Pasta
Food generally was very good. The pasta dishes are the showcase here, though the sauce for the gnocchi should have been a little thicker . Rack of Lamb was very good, and the pork fine, though a little chewy. The quail was good too. Service was a bit spotty. No grated cheese was offered for my pasta dish. service was a bit busk, when we asked to lower the music we were told they could not lower it. By the way, the music is a bit off, Bjork? She is great but not dinner music. The décor, which is very inviting, screams jazz, either classical or modern.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and service at a rock concert
Food and service and setting were excellent but you have to endure blasting rock music from artists you have of played really loud. The owner must be trying to find a niche of people who love to spend $100 per person of dinner while listening to blaring rock music. Given all the great restaurants in NYC, no reason to go here, which is sad as the food is great.

We used to come here before COVID- it was great Now it is mediocre food and poor service with high prices I am advising everyone to simply avoid it
Be the first to ReplyNice surroundings and service, but very loud music, so cannot recommend to go as a couple
The restaurant is off to a good start for becoming really good. However, when seated in the dining room, the very loud music is spoiling the good atmosphere, and made us just to want ro finish, which is too bad. We even approached what seemed to be the Head of the waiters (wearing a jacket), but he just said that the noise level is how it can be expected Saturday evening! 😖 Coming to the food, then the appetizers and starters were to the point, but the main course’s at bit too acidic for our taste. To conclude, then this restaurant have for sure potential, but still some way to go…..
Be the first to ReplyAwful service and food
In NYC for 4 nights as part of a month’s vacation in USA from the UK. This was by far our worst experience. Security / bouncer was downright rude from moment we arrived. We were seated outside which was fine but the tables are placed on sidewalk with people passing through constantly. The server left us sitting for 15 minutes before offering drinks. The drinks took another 10 minutes to arrive. When our food order was eventually taken, the server was vacant and looking around her and seemed very disinterested. The food was simply not good. We ordered 4 different pasta dishes and not one was flavoured as per the description on the menu. The food was very bland and overpriced for what it was. As soon as we finished - and most plates had food left on them - they cleared the table and then tried to force dessert menus on us immediately. Not only was that inappropriate regarding timing, but also completely inconsistent from their previous slow non existent service at the start. We had ordered a bottle of wine and had to ask them to refill our glasses (twice) as they had taken the wine bottle away from the table. No further drinks were offered to us or our children. It started to rain quite heavily and rain was pouring on to me and both my son and I from the dripping gazebo. I would expect staff to immediately assist and move customers in to shelter. Only one young waiter come to help by moving the table and wiping the seats down. The ignorant and rude security guy said ‘tell her to move’ referring to my daughter. Downright ridiculous. We paid and left and actually went elsewhere to eat as the food had been that bad. On the way out, the rude security man said to me ‘sorry about the rain’ in a sarcastic tone. Then to my daughter he said ‘mama is mad’. My daughter was very unimpressed and he is lucky I didn’t hear him myself. The fact that he assumed our displeasure was down to the rain shows how arrogant this restaurant is. I absolutely would not recommend this restaurant at all. It has appalling service and very poor food.

The loud music drummed out any conversation and so loud as to have tinnitus for the next day. The food was excellent as always; however, the server was mediocre at best. Not professional.

We have been to Babbo before and the experience was better. This time the while food was vey good., The service was off tempo. As we ordered the tasting menu with wine pairing we expected the wines to be prior to the food service. We expected more explanation of each dish. The endless soundtrack of CCR played very loudly definitely affected our ability to hear what the servers were saying.
Be the first to ReplyWaste of time and money
It’s been a long time since I’ve spent so much money to eat bleh food and to be treated like an inconvenience. I won’t say the staff was rude but they were indifferent. We had a late seating so perhaps they were ready to call it a night and unable to muster any semblance of personality. The food: Our appetizer of mozzarella and broccolini on a romesco was one note and the mozzarella didn’t seem fresh. My pappardelle bolognese was similarly one note and had me longing for Italian food that I had in Mexico. My husbands 100 layer lasagna had a 101st layer of charcoal which was the only layer that seemed to have any flavour. Our wine was over priced. Our “bottled” sparkling water was off a tap. Such a disappointing last dinner on our trip to New York.

We frequented Babbo when Mario Bataly was still involved and always enjoyed the food and service. We decided to return for my stepdaughter's birthday. We arrived early for our 6:15 pm reservation and were seated right away. It took a while to get our drinks (no problem) and we ordered promptly when the waiter returned. Although the menu offered three courses, the four of us opted for an appetizer and entree only. Again, it took a while for the food to arrive but we had no problem with that. While the pasta selections were good, the veal Milanese was disappointing. Whenever I have ordered it in the past, it has been served on a bed of greens with a vinegary dressing to offset the richness of the chop. Mine appeared as a bare piece of fried meat on a white plate. Not even a piece of parsley as presentation. Very unappetizing. We then ordered dessert and coffee. As soon as the bill arrived (a hefty $600 with a generous tip), the captain came over and tried to remove our dessert plates. Since we were only half done and were still obviously eating , we waived him away and told him that we were not finished. He hovered by the table and literally three minutes later, looked pointedly at his watch and at us, and again tried to take away our desserts. Turns out it was 8:00 and they had obviously booked the table for a time inconsistent with the timing of service of the meals. When I commented to the captain that I thought he was being rude, he just said it was his job to "watch over the dining room." In retrospect, I wish we had taken our son-in-law's advice and ordered after dinner drinks to seek if the captain was going to bodily remove us from the table! As we were leaving the table, he said "Please come again." Fat chance!

Recently visited for the second time with my wife. As with the first, we enjoyed the pasta tasting menu, which provides a taste of 5 truly delicious pastas with a fairly broad range, plus dessert. My personal favorites were the beef cheek ravioli and the chocolate caramel tarte. The tasting was well paced, the staff attentive, and the sommelier was quite excellent in helping us pick a perfect Barolo.
Overall, if you enjoy a solid pasta, or trying several, alongside a beautiful glass of wine, it's definitely a restaurant you should try.
Fine Italian Restaurant but ambiance is not too refined
The food was very fine with attention to details of composition, flavors and a mixture of traditional dishes and more adventurous fare. The antipasto was tasty and copious, the pastas we ordered were flavorful and al dente, and the second course meat dishes were hearty and satisfying. Fine wine and cocktails by the glass were to be had. Desserts while somewhat pricey were well made and tasty. The service was very attentive and professional. The reason I am not giving this restaurant five stars is because of the excessively loud rock music that was incessant and unvaried. There was no variance in the mood or tone or dynamics, so that by the end of our meal, I was literally exhausted from the loudness of the rock music. This really marred the ambiance and otherwise very soothing and tasteful decor. My advice to the management is to consider modulating the music so that there is variation in mood and tone as well as decibels, just as the lighting was dimmed as we got later into the meal. The fact that it was a Saturday night dis not matter I was told, as even during weekdays the music tends toward the loud and nerve-wracking. This is really too bad.
