We went to Avra Saturday night for dinner and my wife's
We went to Avra Saturday night for dinner and my wife's birthday along with our daughter and son in law. I will say it was a pleasant evening, but I have some issues with the restaurant. We frequent many restaurants and can honestly say we eat out almost all Saturday nights. I very rarely write reviews pro or con but I feel this is worth saying. Friends of ours love Avra, but I don't understand why. The food was nothing special, it was good but for the price I feel there is much better in Manhattan. If you want to be a top end restaurant in midtown I feel you have to be better then average and it was not. The issue that bothered me the most was when we sat down we were asked what kind of water we wanted and we said tap. Keep in mind we are life long New York City residents and we know NYC has the best drinking water in the world. The water came in bottles and I assumed they were being refilled. At times the bus boys also refilled our glasses from pitchers. When all was said and done the check had a $30.00 water charge. When I brought it to the attention of the server she said she was sorry. I feel she was a good waitress but I feel this was not acceptable. I don't like to make a fuss but our check was well over $ 500.00 I paid the bill but I will never go back to this restaurant and I would not recommend it.

Nice upscale restaurant! You can keep it casual or dress up if you'd like! Make sure you order plenty of appetizers to try! The Mykonos Breeze drink was my favorite. Also can get very busy so I suggest making a reservation!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing Lunch!! Really nice Greek restaurant.
Waitress was super nice. Went on a business lunch, slightly loud for any in depth conversation but we also sat in the lounge area bc it was a little last minute so idk if regular seating is a little more spacious. Overall pleasant experience.
Be the first to ReplyAvra will always be in my top 5.
A perfect place and my go to for special occasions. Everything is thoughtful and superb. Always the freshest food and superior service! Don't forget to pair an amazing wine with your meal. And definitely don't skip out on dessert here! Paired with a cappuccino or a cup of tea of course. Don't think about it, just make the reservation! :)
Be the first to ReplyHad a business lunch meeting here.
We arrived early. They brought out really delicious and fresh bread with butter that had sea salt or kosher salt sprinkled on it. The meals we ordered were the Bifteki, Tuna Nicoise, and Plaki. Everyone liked what they ordered. I thought the mustard vinaigrette Tuna Nicoise was mild compared to other times I have had Tuna Nicoise. It filled up rather quickly. There were a lot of conversations going on. However, you do not have to fear being overhead by people at neighboring tables.

Made a reservation via resy same day so I was able to get a great table at the time I wanted. The food and service were both fantastic.

Stopped here for dinner, had a drink while waiting on others to show up at the bar. The fish bar shows you the fresh fish for the night, a good selection of whole fish there. The menu was mostly fish, and the appetizers varied - I liked the octopus grilled, classic spreads were ok, and the sea bass souvlaki was just so-so. The main dishes we shared a strip steak (just ok, a little over cooked for medium rare), sea bass plaki was ok (again, not sure why so much tomato sauce). Grilled veggies were fine, and the truffle fries too dry (they need to cut them thinner). Dessert - olive oil cake was ok. Overall the food was ok; the service, though, wasn't great. A lot of waiting for the service between courses, no one around even to refill water after it was requested.
Be the first to ReplyLet me start by saying we went specifically for the lobster
Let me start by saying we went specifically for the lobster pasta and the sepia appetizer. They were out of the sepia which was a major disappointment and we were there for a 5:30 PM reservation so I don't know how they ran out so fast. The best appetizers were the octopus and Avra chips. Also ordered one langoustine and one king prawn which are both priced expensively by the pound. The langoustines were $82 a pound and the king prawn $63 a pound. I was very disappointed by the size of the langoustine, it was tiny, and the king prawn was not so king-ly. Seemed more like a med-large shrimp. Since I only asked for only one of each, I wish they gave me a larger portion. For dinner, we ordered the lamb chops and the lobster pasta. The lamb chops, I ordered medium rare, and there was hardly any pink... they were dry and overcooked, and had way too much char flavor almost like they were burnt. So we did not enjoy those. It also only came with three pieces and for $72 at least give us the fourth piece. But since they weren't that good, I guess the fourth piece wasn't necessary. The lobster pasta was decent. Although the sauce could've had more rich lobster or any kind of seafood flavor. The sauce was just a basic Pomodoro sauce and didn't have any depth to it, but it had a decent amount of lobster meat. Overall, for the steep prices, I don't think this place is worth the visit. Appetizers are as much as entrées at a normal nice restaurant in the city. The food wasn't worth it. Disappointed we came here instead for our anniversary. Passed up ILIS or Atomix, stupid decision.

It's always hopping so you may want reservations. Food is fresh and authentic.

Talk about a trendy seafood, Greek style restaurant , this place is outstanding. Awesome drinks, friendly bartenders to super attentive wait staff this place has it all. Fresh seafood with sides to die for. This is my forth time eating here and each time it is nothing but spectacular.

Very good, though very pricey We came 7:30pm on a Thursday and the place was PACKED. Looks like a lot of colleagues or client dinner meetings, which the atmosphere and food is great for, but as a result the place is so loud with everyone talking.Free bread to start. I loved the Avra Chips with its tzatziki sauce. Both the grilled calamari and the freshly grilled fish we got were tender, light, and delicious. The latter was priced at market rate per pound. They have many fresh fish to choose from. Mediterranean food done well. These 3 dishes and a glass of wine turned out to be ~$100 a person..
Be the first to ReplyNot a fan and would not return.
I hosted a group here for a work lunch in January. The service was not great. Not very attentive, didn't bring us enough menus, only brought one beverage menu for a large table. This may be restaurant policy but it was weird. Not very friendly or welcoming and hard to track down our server at times. This may indicate understaffing, it was hard to say for sure. Food came out pretty slowly but we weren't in a rush so it wasn't too bad. The food also left a lot to be desired. We left many dishes at least 75% uneaten. We had 4 starters and each had our own entree and there was a ton of uneaten food. No one asked if there was a reason the lamb salad was untouched, or one of the other people's entrees. The reason is that they weren't good. One person told me after they found plastic in their food but hadn't wanted to make a scene. The shrimp cocktail was overcooked too which was too bad. The beet salad I had was ok but pretty bland. A woman stopped by towards the end of our meal and asked the table how our meal was but my clients didn't want to critique anything in front of me and she was on the opposite side of the table from me so I would have really had to have announced quite loudly if I wanted to bring any issues to her attention. We answered "everything was fine!". Honestly I can't be too harsh on this bye etiquette wise it just wasn't really a good opportunity to give feedback. I'd recommend that if the staff wants to deal with these issues on the spot more effectively they may want to ask more specific questions. Anytime plates are left full it's worth getting more info.

Still fabulous after all these years!!! Fresh fish flown each day!! All apps excellent with excellent service. I asked for a table with less noise and that's what we got!! Awesome night! Came here again Sunday before 4. Same menu only it's a 3 course menu and the price is right.

Pretty good food although their menu can certainly be expanded upon to offer more options and variety. The service is what sets it apart.
Be the first to ReplyWe loved it.
The grilled octopus was amazing. The potatoes delicious. The filet mignon was beautifully cooked and seasoned perfectly. The cocktails could have used some ice. Bit the food was great. The staff was also very attentive. Everything very cleaned.

We saw this fancy place on the AVenue of the Americas and hoped we could slip in for a quick lunch without a reservation, and were so grateful the hostess seated us. Our waiter was Petros, who explained the specials and patiently answered our questions. We did not have much time so ordered quickly and the wait staff was prompt and polite. We just loved the roasted beet salad... it was perfection. We loved the fried calamari too. Petros was very attentive and kind and helped us understand some of the menu items .. they were Greek to us! A beautiful, modern, clean and elegant classy restaurant where you can find affordable dishes or totally splurge on the fresh fish.
Be the first to ReplyI came here for team lunch, and was pleasantly surprised.
This place is SO spacious and the service here is top notch. Everything also seemed so fresh and well seasoned. I HIGHLY recommend the Avra Chips; they were so well seasoned and crispy. Most of my teammates, including myself, did the 3 course menu. I got calamari as the appetizer, grilled organic chicken for the entree, and greek yogurt for the dessert. I left feeling SO full and took most of my entree and some apps home. Our server was amazing and so funny. He really knew what he was doing and made the experience here so great.

This was my favorite outdoor dining experience during my recent week's stay in Manhattan. Everything was exceptional... our attentive server, handsome to boot... the striped umbrella seating... and most of all the delicious food. You absolutely must order the AVRA CHIPS... if I lived in the city, I'd go daily just for those! Everything we ordered... grilled shrimp, classic spreads, Greek salad, was fresh and so flavorful. But, be sure to save room for their olive oil cake. Linger over mint tea and enjoy the neighborhood atmosphere. I can't wait to return!
Be the first to ReplyI came here to eat and really enjoyed myself.
The place was packed with people, and the ambiance was very nice. Dim lighting and just a nice relaxing dining experience. I have eaten at another one of the locations and I felt the service was better at the other location. The server was not as engaging. The food was beyond excellent.
Be the first to ReplyGood choice for business luncheon or dinner.
I have been to this place many times now and always in company dollar. Don't take me wrong - I'd bring friends and family there too. Oh yes, top notch food and service.
Be the first to ReplyLovely outdoor dining.
..we were a party of six for a weekday lunch.we ordered from the price fixed menu. Our waiter was great but so overworked that service was lousy.Appetizers were great and large portions and come with pita olives and dip.I ordered the swordfish kabob which was delicious.Everyone else ordered the salmon...no one commented about it or finished it...Lovely experience even though they were understaffed.
Be the first to ReplyThe food itself is quite good.
I came with a group of nine selective folks and we all enjoyed everything we ate.The staff in general seemed kind and friendly but our server was awful. The service was incredibly slow, he constantly forget our drinks a s part of order etc. While we had a handful of requests for second drinks, I came with an incredibly polite party. The waiter seemed annoyed from the moment we arrived and hardly checked on us.
