14 francs for tap water
Food was not bad. But 14 francs for tap water!!!! Are you kidding me!!! The waiter didn't mention this at all when he asked us what to drink.
Be the first to ReplyLove the ribs
One of the only places in Zurich that has barbecue ribs and the ribs was delicious. Dessert was the bomb too. I’ll definitely be back when I come back to Zurich
Be the first to ReplyOutrageously bad.
Outragiously overpriced, the house salad is a shame with molecules of ONE cooked egg in the midst of a tasteless salat; we were given water glasses but the water never came; lots of idle waiters lounging around whose main activity is chatting. The dishes were less than mediocres, the quantities were laughable; we had 10 full meals in Swizerland during these 5 days "Urlaub", this one was the only "woops ! wrong adress ! " experience . Incredibly bad service and indifference, stay away from it unless you want to spend 97 CHF for next to nothing (table for two). Shameful.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food and friendly service
I am very stingy with top reviews but after several visits I really can’t find any faults with AuGust. Great food, very friendly and attentive staff, nice layout. What’s not to like? This is a meat restaurant, though they do have non meat items on the menu. My “go to” is the sliced veal Zürich style which comes with a mushroom cream sauce. Add a side of spaetzle and you have an amazing meal. Unfortunately, I’m always too full to try their amazing looking desserts. Perhaps next time…
Be the first to ReplyAnother consistent winner - traditional Swiss cuisine nicely executed with confidence & style
Returning here after many years thankfully wasn’t an error..as can sometimes be the case with fondly held memories of past dining experiences, never matching current delivery. Warmly greeted & seated at their second sitting, we were in for what transpired to be a relaxed & delicious meal..meat being central to what they do… We all went expressly to experience the classic Swiss favorite “Fleischkase”..a fine veal meatloaf that is lightly pan fried & most often topped served with a sunnyside-up egg..but it may be subjected to many added indignities such as mushrooms & other culinary treasures! Still with the ubiquitous egg. Maybe! Standard modern accompaniment are chips, but my husband & myself picked another Swiss delight >> Roesti - fried shredded potatoes..oh Boy! Their version was only just “ok” ..but their slim chips were far far better ! Prior to all this deliciousness we began by sharing super thin Weidikerli sausages & the house salad .. super !( as the locals are wont to exclaim!) Efficient service with attendant charm was consistently delightful, & I’ve only one quibble that surfaced which was the utter disbelief in being charged CHF 22 for a Swiss cheese platter whose three varieties had come straight from the refrigerator..whaaat?, This laziness is an unforgivable culinary crime against good food, & AuGust must know better. Shame on them.. We concluded our repast with good coffees..& shared an entirely unnecessary- but superb!- Millefeulle. Recommended.

The food wasn't special, the service was too chummy and the cramped seating was really unbearable. That was the end of the visit to this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThat's really not possible, a disgrace for the Widder Hotel!
I am, or was, a big fan of the Widder Hotel and have been able to enjoy the Widder Restaurant several times. But what unfortunately happened in the AuGust, which is part of the hotel, is a disgrace for the hotel and for Zurich too. The reception in the AuGust was cold or even non-existent. The restaurant was empty and instead of a "welcome", I was just given a strange look, as if you want to give me some work now... Luckily, ordering went smoothly. But what was then served is simply unbelievable. The cheese starter for 18 francs would have failed as an amuse bouche in any other restaurant in terms of portion size. Maybe 5 grams of cheese on a huge bed of salad, which shouldn't have been there according to the menu, but the kitchen was allowed to use the large plate. Well, that looks like more. Dear F&B Manager, that's more than insulting, even in Zurich. The staff are very committed to venting about the world and its problems in front of all the guests in the middle of the restaurant. Of course the guests are too stupid to notice. Since the world has so many problems, the staff were so distracted that their attention to the guests was negligible or almost non-existent. No one asked if the food was tasty. 10 minutes before an empty beer glass and so on. A clear complaint when paying was immediately acknowledged as "are you trying to cause me problems now?" Unfortunately, it's a shame that the Maitre de Restaurant is in the same league. So, dear Widder team: NEVER EVER AGAIN!
Be the first to ReplyBe careful of the water
Average food, prices also high for what they offer, but the thing I least liked is discovering that water (from the tap) is sold for 7 francs per person with the formula "as long as you want it" which on a table 4 people where 3 take the beer and only one the water they all have to pay anyway... it's written on the menu anyway... what we tasted is normal for the area, nothing exceptional including the rosti, we liked the bread and butter offered .
Be the first to ReplyPasta with Truffle
Love the extraordinary Tagliatelle Pasta with Duck and Truffle. Fast service, food is served in 15-20mins. Nice ambiance and atmosphere.
Be the first to ReplyA very good restaurant
My wife and I went to dinner at this restaurant recommended by a famous guide. We found the setting very pleasant, the cuisine excellent and the service perfect. This experience enchanted us so much that we returned there a week later. Same satisfaction regarding the quality of the cuisine and the explanations of Roger who was able to advise us effectively in the choice of our dishes and wines with professionalism and great kindness. An excellent address in Zurich.
Be the first to ReplyHappy accident
My wife and I were just wandering around the old town after doing some shopping and accidentally came across this place. It looked very nice from the outside so we just decided to walk in and try it out for a late lunch (4pm). The waiting staff was very kind (some of then are absolutely hilarious) and quickly got us seated, drinks arrived very quickly too, accompanied by some warm bread and homemade salty butter. We went through the menu (which looked and sounded very French), saw a couple of plates being served to people around us and finally opted for a tartare de boeuf and some pork ribs with salad and fries on the side. The ribs definitely rank amongst the best we've ever eaten and these side salads were absolutely delicious (they're a great alternative to heavier sides if you're watching your weight like I do). Pretty much everything is fresh, cooked and assembled on the spot, loads of ingredients come straight from a farm owned by the restaurant, that certainly explains why the food is so tasty. We also liked the prices which we found fairly low for the quality/standing (elegant waiters in shirts/jackets, cloth napkins, menu en français, etc) All and all we had a great time there and will definitely return, it is our favourite restaurant in the city center of Zurich.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent !
The best beef tartar I have had in a long time. Well structured, tasty, not too hot, justas ordered. Excellent service by Philippe late on New Year's Eve.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food. Rude service
Food was OK. Service was awful. Lady maître d’ was borderline offensive. Great location and good food though. Next time I’ll check if she’s around before going in.
Be the first to ReplyRude waiter
Walked in to enquire about a table on a Sunday afternoon (as one of the only restaurants we could find open on a Sunday in Zurich, they were fairly busy). When a waiter finally acknowledged us we found his communication style very rude. Asked for a table and he replied ‘Not a chance’ not even looking us directly and walking off in the opposite direction. Just poor manners and customer service. Needless to say we did not return.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent wine menu but very average meals at expensive prices.
I ordered the veal which was okay, nothing special at all, especially at the price they charge. The rest of the table had ribs, tartare, and burger who were all surprised at how bland the meals were. The others had the laberkase who said was very good.
The friendly server had made suggestions for appetizers for the table to share which we happily followed. After about a 20 minute wait, only 1 person was served their salad and the 2 people at the end of the table had received their starters who were informed was part of their meal. After another 20 minutes passed and us 5 hungry people awkwardly watch the other 3 enjoying their starters, we called the confused server over who had to bring the manager to our table.
The manager immediately explained that it was our fault for not knowing that the starters that were placed in front of the two people at the end of the table were meant for everyone to share.. We told the manager that the server said it was part of the 2 people's meal who reminded us again that it is our fault not knowing it was meant for everyone and there is nothing she can do. Her solution was to take away the nearly finished appetizer away from the two people at the end of the table and place it in front of me to share the left overs with then others... She then suggested that if we want more appetizers, we are free to order more....
Pretentious restaurant that serves very average dishes at very high prices. Absolutely no reason to go here.
Good Choice as a “Plan B”
Nice decor and very good service. Menü ist a bit uninspiring yet there were a few interesting choices. The overall experience was good and the price was OK given the overall quality of the food and service.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible food, crazy expensive, bunch of cheap b*******
This place is so bad in so many ways.
The service was friendly enough at first, but then peters off in attention and friendliess. We all ordered the vegetarian burgers. Think compressed sawdust discs, no flavour, the texture of wallpaper paste, served with a tablespoon's worth of wilted coleslaw. These discs were clearly straight from Aligro or some other "Costco for restaurants" kind of business and could not have cost them more than 1 Fr. apiece. Yet they have the gall to charge 29 Fr. for it. Seriously, the worst so-called veggie burger we have ever had. Worse than the terrible veggie burgers marketed by the country's two main grocery store chains (they're terrible, but nowhere close to as bad as August's).
You do get the choice of sides to go with it (fries, spätzli, salad), but that will cost you 7 Fr. extra, and only the salad seemed to be vaguely worth it. The fries were okay, but clearly of frozen origin, and the spätzli was the worst I've ever had. Ever.
Would you like some water? You can never go wrong with tap water, so that's what we ordered. We received a bottle of it (just their own branded bottles, which they fill from the tap as requested.) But lo and behold, what's this on the bill at the end? 6 Francs per bottle! For tap water! We purposely asked for tap water to avoid the silliness of bottled water and to save a few bucks on what was going to be an expensive meal (and we don't believe in bottled water; I mean in this day and age, who is stupid enough to buy that stuff?). When people ask for tap water, it's clear they are trying to save money and the planet, so the waitress COULD have said "That's going to cost you 6 Francs, so you may as well have a beer or soft drink instead." But no, she conveniently omitted that. Maybe it's a Zurich thing.
When I received the bill, I asked her what the mystery "soda ohne" was (I know what it means, soda water without (bubbles)), but I was surprised to see it there. She says that's standard practice in Switzerland and a lot of other countries like France, which was a blatant lie. I promptly pointed out the erroneous nature of her statement: it is rare to be charged for tap water in France, in other Swiss cantons (we've been living here and have toured the country extensively and have never been charged for it), and even in Zurich. Bärengasse, an upscale restaurant in Zurich, is wonderful and is classy enough not to charge for tap water or sneer at you if you prefer it. Yes, most restaurants will charge a crazy amount for bottled water, and yes, many waiters will get annoyed with you if you ask for tap water, but you will get it and you won't be charged for it. So I call bull****.
The fact that this place charges 6 Fr. for tap water can only be a sign of one of two things:
(a) this place is desperately clinging to dear life and has to nickel and dime people to save their skin (seriously, 29 Fr. for a veggie burger from veggie hell should more than cover the cost of filling a bottle), or
(b) the owners are greedy scumbags.
I vote both.
Water is a common courtesy, a friendly gesture that says "welcome", a right. For what it costs them (0.000001 Fr./litre), it's simply vulgar that they would charge for it.
When you eat out in Zurich, it's safe to say that you will often pay a hefty price for a decent meal. But this place charges a hefty price for store-bought slop.
Total cost of this meal for 2 adults, 2 kids, including 4 burgers, 4 sides, 2 bevs (juice and coffee) and the most expensive tap water on earth: CHF 167.50. That's US$183, C$224.41 (Canadian), 240 Australian dollars... You get the picture.
