We had an excellent dinner at American Son -- a surprise, since the menu doesn't have much to choose from if you don't eat meat or shellfish. Nevertheless we found enough: yellowtail hamachi crudo for the first course, and fried whole fish for the main course. We shared each of these courses and -- to our surprise -- we were too full for dessert.
The yellowtail was excellent. It was fresh and set off well by its passionfruit-jalapeno dressing. The macadamia nuts were a good addition, but the puffed rice was inspired, giving it just the right mixture of silky, crunchy, and crispy. If only there had been bread to sop up the last of the dressing. (The restaurant doesn't serve bread, to accommodate its gluten-intolerant patrons, our server said. That's a bum reason, as far as I am concerned.)
The whole fried fish -- snapper the night we were there -- looked skimpy on its platter, but the sweet meat was so plentiful that it easily satisfied us. The atypical fried rice (did they start with black rice or did it turn black in cooking?) was tasty alongside, but we did not like the kim chee. However, the chef saved the day with an extremely delicious green salad with blue-cheese dressing. I'd go back for that salad alone.
We shared a "Pear" -- a cocktail of gin, pear brandy, pear cordial, and a touch of absinthe. It was delicate, almost floral, and yummy.
Our bill came to under $90, and while we didn't have a lot of food, we were sated when we finished. We didn't even have room for one of the desserts; I would have chosen the butterscotch panna cotta or the deconstructed s'mores. Next time.
