Heralded since opening for Southern hospitality and upscale Comfort Food that makes guests feel at home in LA’s urban jungle, it was with the partial-lifting of pandemic precautions that six friends sat down at Alta West Adams, a strict 90-minute limit making things feel slightly less “warm” considering the fact that the Hollywood Restaurant was less than a quarter filled from noon until 1:30 on Saturday.
A joint project from Chefs Keith Corbin and Daniel Patterson, Locol’s failure seeing the Bay Area Chef tap a talented native of Watts to make “honest California Soul Food,” it is through indoor seating and a bar that diners access Alta’s shaded backyard patio complete with foliage, heaters and QR-code menus.
On-concept in everything from Drinks to Cuisine, with prices one might expect in West Hollywood, it is from Starters that guests are invited to begin their meal, Alta’s Cornbread big enough to share but crumbly around the edges while Pimento Dip and deep-fried Black Eyed Peas pack plenty of heat and fare far better.
Also adding Brunch-special Pancakes, the Cornmeal Batter here well-utilized for oversized discs that are buoyant and buttery, sides tally $7-9 with excellent Mac & Cheese at least 8x the size of a laughable quarter Sweet Potato beneath two ground Pecans.
Also adding Collards, a porky sapor invigorating tender Greens and complex aromatics, fans of BBQ will find Corbin’s Brisket lacking Bark but upgraded by sweet BBQ Sauce while $31 Oxtails with Rice and $24 Shrimp and Grits each justify their cost with bold flavors and textbook execution.
Defiantly charging $4.50 a piece for Fried Chicken lacking Breasts, apparently skillet-made but more akin to what one might get from an air-fryer, Dessert poses a different set of challenges, outsourced 7-Up Cake moist and enjoyable in comparison to what is essentially a Pineapple Upside Down Muffin and neither nearly so good as the light and layered Banana Pudding.
