Alpen Rose Philadelphia Reviews
My husband and I had our 5th wedding anniversary dinner
My husband and I had our 5th wedding anniversary dinner here last night. We started off with a regular cocktail (no 21 and hubby enjoyed) and a zero proof cocktail, (one with the rose water) and it was fantastic! We split the bone marrow toast - the toast itself with the beef cheeks is so good! The bone marrow, which neither of us have had before, is as okay. I would not order it again but like I said the toast with the beef was really good! My husband had the tomahawk and I had the beef Wellington both cooked medium rare and we shared the potato pave and the Mac and cheese and everything was absolutely delicious! The steaks are carved/cut table side for you. We had the chocolate cake for dessert and hands down one of the best chocolate cakes I've had - moist and the icing is almost fudge like! Our server was great, attentive and offered suggestions when asked. 10 out of 10 would recommend!

Celebrated my 4th wedding anniversary and first trip to Philadelphia at Alpen Rose. It's the perfect backdrop for an intimate dinner with a significant other or a small group of friends looking for the complete fine dining experience. My hope is that more restauranteurs lean into the "boutique restaurant" model as it really caters to a niche, but bountiful, population of foodies.

In Philly's heart, where candles glow, Alpen Rose puts on a show. The bread? Like clouds from angels' hands-- Soft little pillows, no demands. Oysters rich in garlicked grace, Filet cooked right, a perfect place. Then came the cake, a blazing flame, A sweet and fiery end to fame. A meal divine from start to close-- I'll dream again of Alpen Rose.
Great restaurant to celebrate any occasion.
Definitely more upscale than I'm used to. Great service. The restaurant itself gives a speakeasy feeling. Dark atmosphere. Low music. The food was very good. Only thing I don't like is that the sides are purchased separately from the main course. I was happy to finally try oysters Rockefeller. The duck was good, nice size, for an entree.
Do not go here
They are so unfriendly and so stuck on themselves. We could not get out of our RV spot because the way they did the roads and they’re blaming us because we drove over the grass. We have a 45 foot coach and that’s the spot they put us in where we could not get out. The woman came out yelling at us screaming so unprofessional. There’s a kind way to handle things and there is a bad way to handle things and this woman handle things extremely poorly. They have all these rules here and I am so unhappy with this park I would keep going. There’s other nice parks in the Durango area.

Came here for my birthday, and to get in, you have to ring a bell. When you walk in, it's a small restaurant with a cozy atmosphere. The ambiance was lovely, dim lighting gave it an intimate feel. We were seated right away, and our server was very attentive, answering all of our questions. The rolls were incredibly soft and airy. The creamy spinach was good, though it could've used just a pinch of salt. The bone-in ribeye was cooked to perfection, though I added a little salt to enhance the flavor. For dessert, I ordered the chocolate cake. It was moist and delicious. Overall, it was a great experience!

This place is beautiful! A small, quaint restaurant where you have to ring the bell to be let in. I thought that was so adorable. Immediately upon being seated we were greeted by our amazing waiter. He was attentive, helpful, and efficient. I came here for a birthday and they added a sparkler into the dessert for the birthday girl. Loved that. Now onto the food. The steaks were cooked to perfection and a nice thick quality, but needed a touch bit of seasoning more for me. The creamed spinach was spectacular! Great steak place if you're looking for one!
Starting with parking, it's philly.
Get to alpen and got in and the scene is pretty perfect. Low key at its finest. Got seated and the waitress was super cool. No fake smile vibes. We got an array of sides along with the filet and beef wellington. The experience is a great part of dining here so im not trying to give away to much with this review. Anything you order will be delicious! Food and drinks etc. I would highly recommend !!
Fabulous "special occasion" steak house.
Excellent meal only surpassed by friendly, competent service (shout out to Dana). Club ambiance without being stuffy.
Found this place from a social media profile I follow.
What sold it for me was the library of books. I knew I was gonna be in town for a Library conference and I always treat myself to a fancy meal a couple times of year. This means dressing up a little, no ripped jeans, tank tops etc. I tried making a reservation via their online but it wouldn't let me for less than party of 2. Called and left a message and shortly after they opened I got a call and spoke to a lovely gentleman who said they had a seat at the bar at opening. Get there and you ring the bell and a window portion opens. Like a speakeasy. The place is fairly small, so I can see why reservations are hard to get. 8 booths and 4 tables and 6 bar seats. The bar was great as I get to watch the drinks being made. The menus are like old school library due date cards. Instead of patron name its the menu item and due date is the price. Started off with a non alcoholic drink which looked Ike the real thing and was refreshing. No98. Rose syrup, cranberry and sparkling soda. So good and refreshing I had two. Now this is not a place where you get and all in one meal. You pick an appetizer, main and sides and pay for them as priced. If you are a cheap person or date don't come here. I'd never had bone marrow nor beef cheek so started off with that. The beef cheek was shredded and served on a slice of sourdough and half bone shanks with toasted marrow. Server told me how to eat and scrapped the marrow and put on to toast. The beef cheek was so rich and combined with the marrow buttery. Next I opted for salmon (yes, I know its a steakhouse) but my hotel had a fridge but no microwave and I know i could eat all the salmon. For the sides I went for grilled asparagus and potatoes pave(layered in a loaf pan and baked) the salmon grilled to perfection and served with fresh made horseradish and a half grilled lemon. The asparagus was out of this world. Grilled with a nice tender crunch and topped with freshly shredded parmesean. Potato pave came with sour cream. This side wasn't my fav I will say. Now on to dessert. This, besides the decor is the other reason I wanted to eat here. Baked Alaska in the shape of a pineapple. Baked Alaska is making a comeback from the 80s. Im one of those fortunate to remember this as child attending fancy fundraisers. Its made with a cake base, pineapple and cherry sorbet topped with meringue carefully shaped to resemble the pineapple. Its brought to the table and rum in a vessel and set on fire and poured on to the meringue which "bakes" the meringue and the alcohol burns off. It was as I remembee remembered. Ended it off with a cappuccino martini. Staff is great. Not overly attentive, but pay attention when parts of meal are done. Checkin when needed. That alone is worth a good tip. Treat yourself here. You'll lovf it.

My boyfriend and I ate here last year to celebrate our anniversary. We LOVED our experience, the ambience is nice and dark and intimate, music wasn't too loud which I always appreciate. He ordered the beef wellington and really enjoyed it. I ordered the duck (with apple gastrique and pecan) and have regularly joked since that I should start my culinary career just to learn how to make that duck dish. Worth mentioning that the table next to us ordered the tomahawk and it was HUGE. They said they liked it a lot. One thing I'm always concerned about when eating at nicer/pricier restaurants is the serving size, but we had plenty to eat plus leftovers. Drinks were unique and reasonably priced, I especially liked No. 21 (bourbon, smoked tea, pedro ximenez, fino). Ordered the REFINED No. 01 as well (rye bourbon, amaro, black walnut, applewood smoke) which comes with a gorgeous smokey presentation, but tbh No. 21 feels more interesting and balanced. Bottom line: Would absolutely recommend coming here as a special celebration, and I hope to come back in the future.
Terrible experience at expensive and over-hyped restaurant
One of our worst dining experiences ever. This fancy speakeasy has no name on the door, just a gold plaque with a rose on it. You have to ring the doorbell when you arrive and a secret panel opens in the door for the host to speak through. I found it on a list of “cozy and romantic” restaurants with great reviews. It is very dark, with bookshelves, and mismatched vintage plates (which fit the décor I guess, but I would have expected something more minimal. It is very popular and by the time we made a reservation (on a Thursday night), the only available time was 8:45pm. This was already late for our preference, but we thought we’d try it since everyone raved about it. We arrived early at 8:30pm to see if our table was ready. They said it was not, and the people currently seated had just ordered dessert. They recommended we get a drink nearby and they would text us when the table was ready. We waited at our hotel lobby around the corner, thinking it wouldn’t be that long. We received a text at 9:06pm that said “Your table is now ready at Alpen Rose!” When we arrived a few minutes later, we rang the bell again, only for them to tell us it was still NOT ready. There was a rowdy party of 5 guys also at the door that were taken in before us. It was almost 9:30pm by the time we were seated. Starving, we ordered oysters Rockefeller. Being so late we asked if we could put in our entrée orders but was told that “the chef likes to course it out”. We were surprised by (who we assumed was) a manager bringing us a complimentary appetizer of tuna carpaccio, however I do not eat raw fish. She left with it and came back to ask if we would like shrimp cocktail instead (which my husband is allergic to). We imagine they were trying to make up for being late, but never asked our preference. She finally brought out a wedge salad, like it or not (which was good, even though I don’t eat bacon). It was very noisy and we were right on top of the people on either side of us – not romantic at all (the space is very small, seating maybe 40 people). The only good thing were the drinks (we had No. 3 and 21). Vegetables and starch sides do not come with the main dish, you must buy them separately (the asparagus was large but tender and tasty). I ordered the branzino, which she said would have some bones but were large and in almost every bite. We were shocked that my husband’s $56 filet was so tough it was hard to cut! Two small dessert bites showed up at the end of the meal, but they did not make up for the poor performance at this price point. We were seated next to the noisy guys who came before us, so in the end we tried to make the best of it, joking and trading photos with them and being entertained by their drinks covered with smoke, massive Tomahawk cavemen bone steaks, and flaming baked Alaska with a sparkler. Maybe at 50 we are older than the typical crowd, and now we know not to make a reservation that late (especially when the times are not honored), but a pricey establishment like this should know better how to space out their reservations. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone, even given the hype.
There are much better choices for a 300 meal.
First time here, won’t be back. Dry aged is the house specialty and they didn’t get it right. I ordered the dry aged rib eye medium rare. First time out, the meat was a true medium. With appropriate apologies, they cooked another. This came out a true medium rare. However, there was so much char on the meat, I could not taste the subtle taste of a $78 piece of meat. Okay, not happy, but we wouldn’t come back. We were offered a free dessert. Now, at the table adjacent to us, the couple ordered a filet medium rare. Theirs too came out grey. And, like ours, the char was so heavy they said it over-powered the taste of the meat. Finally, our complimentary dessert. It’s prime peach time and they had warm peach pie with ice cream. It had a huge puff pastry crust that had no flavor. And worse, the peach cubes were cold, hard and tasteless. In the middle of peach season. Top all this off with tables so close together that when the server was pouring our neighbors wine, their ass was right in my face. Literally, right there. The only redeeming feature was the cocktails and whisky list. This was our third try of restaurants in this chain. Thy Mary and Pearl Oyster House was okay, but The Oyster House is much better. The Giusseppe restaurant was average; Villa Di Roma is a better choice. And Barkley Prime far outshines Alpen Rose.
Great food, good service.
Long wait for a table but once we were seated, everything was fine.
Had a group, family style dinner.
The food was phenomenal and service was excellent. Will definitely be back and highly recommend

This is in the top restaurant experiences of my life and I've eaten at Chez Panisse, Zahav, Vetri, Peter Luger (all fabulous) among other greats. The service is attentive, fun, and non pretentious. We sat at the bar and had a great time with Angelo, the bar tender, who explained recipes and history of restaurants and shared foodie experiences. He gave us good guidance on the menu and made very good cocktails. I sincerely would have stayed for 6 hours if I had the money, the time, and the room in my stomach. The ambiance is cozy and elegant and you don't feel like you're packed in like sardines like at Ralph's (but I will always love Ralph's no matter what).
Very cool speakeasy type restaurant.
They couldn't seat us initially so they brought us through the kitchen to the sister restaurant which was a very cool experience. Great food, very respectful and on-point servers, and good ambiance.
This is the perfect restaurant to celebrate a special event.
We celebrated our anniversary here and everything was perfect. You can believe the hype. Service was 5 stars. Our server was super friendly and very attentive. She even gave us a card for visiting! The restaurant was very cute and instagram worthy. I love that the restaurant was pretty much by reservation only and didn't feel too crowded even thought it wasn't that big. The food and drinks were all perfect to me. My husband steak was a bit salty but I suggested he sent it back and he didn't want to, so that's on him! lol We will definitely be back!
Cannot wait to come back
Fabulous !! It was wonderful ! 2 couples - started with the seafood tower ! Perfection - but so do not miss the bone marrow toast - we each had a little something different - cannot wait to come back !!!!

Had dinner this evening with my wife, daughter and son-in-law. Wonderful experience from beginning to end. A throw back to a by-gone era. You ring a door bell. A small door in the door opens to see who is there. The hostess welcomed us into the cozy and warmly inviting dining room. Our waiter, Don was awesome. Made us feel like we were the only customers he had. All of the food was perfectly cooked and very tasty. Around the table for appetizers we shared bone marrow and octopus. For entrees we had ribeye, filet, duck and branzino. For sides we shared mac and cheese, asparagus, carrots, potato pave and for desert we had peach pie with ice cream and pineapple upside down Alaska. We all agreed it is a place we will go back to.
This place is awesome.
100% recommendation from me. We ordered a tomahawk, with mac and cheese and some square potato thing for our sides. We also ordered the bone marrow toast for appetizer. The tomahawk was amazing. Cooked perfectly with perfect sear and flavor. There was a woman who came to our table with the entire steak and cut it for us in front of us, which was pretty cool. We've had a few tomahawks before and this was the first time we've seen this. Mac and cheese was the best mac and cheese we've ever had. Every bite was an experience. The potato thing was great too. The bone marrow toast came as a piece of toast with meat already on it, along side the bone marrow. I've also never seen this before and it was amazing too. We got some cheesecake-esque dessert and had a few cocktails as well. Zero complaints, everything was awesome. If we ever come back to Philadelphia we are for sure coming here again.
Just an amazing meal all around.
I usually do not go to many steakhouses as I would prefer to grill myself, but this is the exception. I'm already looking forward to returning. We had the bone in NY Strip and Filet (photographed) with the Mac and Cheese as a side. The location itself was unique. You ring a doorbell outside and the hostess opens a slot in the door to greet you-- which caught me off guard at first. There's no lobby or standing room inside which is actually a nice touch so there isn't crowding by the door with other people who are waiting. Highly recommend!
OMG The vibe here is amazing.
It is a hidden gem. I've walked past this place so many times and never knew it was there. You have to knock on the door and give your reservation name as a password to enter. It's really cool. This is a pricey restaurant but the food and experience is excellent. The bone marrow toast is chef's kiss.
The ambiance was perfect and the food was even better.
It's a nice intimate restaurant with great service!
The food service and ambiance was amazing.
The atmosphere gives off speak easy while the service is nothing short of fine dining. Everything from the plates to the ambiance was perfect especially sitting close to the semi open concept kitchen. Huge fan and will be returning. Despite our reservation being half an hour before close my partner and I did not feel rushed. The plates are a work of art as well!
If you want to spend $750 for dinner for four, have poor
If you want to spend $750 for dinner for four, have poor food, a limited and expensive wine list this is the place for you. I have eaten in restaurants in California, Philly, Maryland, Florida and France. This place was by far the worst. You can't find it. When you finally get close, you still can't because the entry in inside a small alcove just ouside the door. Once in the alcove, you still cannot enter because the door is looked. Then you must ring a door bell and wait. After a minute or so, a small window in the door opens and a man or woman asks what you want. The restaurant is a gimmick. If you want to waste you money, this is the place for you.
Staff are fantastic from time you are seated until you walk
Staff are fantastic from time you are seated until you walk out the door. Ambiance is a take you back to times of privacy and special treatment. Can not speak enough about the bone Marrow app that would have never tried it the waiter did not highly recommend as a MUST try and well worth living on the edge. Drinks were super creative and fun for our party tried most of the cocktails and shared for all to sample The steaks are wonderful and the Tomahawk was a real treat. There is something for everyone to dine and enjoy and plenty to take home. Wonderful family dinner.
My partner and I came here for our anniversary and it was
My partner and I came here for our anniversary and it was an awesome experience. It felt like we were in a completely different place the whole time. The interior was cozy and calm. Our server was incredibly sweet as well as the other staff members. Everyone was so nice to us the whole time. We weren't rushed and got great recommendations from the menu. The food was absolutely amazing. We got the lamb, the filet, creamed spinach, and potatoes. Everything tasted amazing and high quality. My favorite was the lamb shanks and the creamed spinach. Incredibly simple but flavorful. We ended the meal with the cheesecake mousse and they gave us complimentary rosé because they knew it was our anniversary from the reservation. It was so incredibly sweet and meant a lot. I would definitely come back here for a special occasion!
Ambience the best - Food subpar
Ate there last night. Great ambience and decor but one of the worst steakhouses I’ve been to as far as food goes. Got a NY strip Pittsburgh medium rare, it was about an inch thick if that and very tough to cut. The creamed spinach side dish was served in what looked like a coffee cup - very small portion. Been to all the steakhouses often. The food here just doesn’t compare to any of them. Sorry.
Have been wanting to try this spot for over a year - and it
Have been wanting to try this spot for over a year - and it did not disappoint!! We split the filet and the beef Wellington because we couldn't decide, melt in your mouth absolute perfection. The vibes are classy and boujee and the service was even better than the food, with suggestions because I really didn't know what to get!
Very nice hidden restaurant .
I was here on my husband's birthday. The food was great, the servers were friendly . Absolutely we will be back

This was my first time ever going to Alpen Rose and it was absolutely phenomenal. First off, the service from beginning to end was astounding. Our table wasn't ready yet and the bar was full so they took us over to Sampan so we could sit at that bar. When our table was ready, they came back and got us and gave us free grilled prawns for having to wait. The food was absolutely delicious. Definitely get the bread because it was so good - I still think about it to this day. The salads were amazing, the steaks - incredible, and the chocolate cake? Omg. So good. The restaurant itself is super classy and nice. I loved the vibes. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd go here every weekend.

We've been to Alpen Rose a few times now and it's reliably delicious. A bit of a splurge but every time there's been something new and exciting. Highly recommend sitting at the bar!
Wow... where do I begin? I will start with a full
Wow... where do I begin? I will start with a full disclosure of the service because I don't want that to get lost down below. Staff here worked hard to make sure we had a wonderful time. My wife's NY Strip was wayyyy too rare for her tastes, she ordered a medium, they took it and the chef did a lousy job to change the internal temperature. Still pretty red in the middle. We decided to let them know again that the steak isn't cooked enough. The manager (Eric I think?) came and really went above and beyond. He apologized an enormous amount, gave us free desert, took off some sides off our bill, and gave us a fresh raw steak wrapped up to take home. The amazing thing is, we thought he just wrapped up the half eaten steak my wife received; we told him we will just cook it more at home. When we got home we found a fresh raw steak wrapped up for us! This is quality service. Additionally, the ambience is absolutely what it should be for a steakhouse. Classy, sophisticated, music not too loud. Drinks were excellently done. I got the "Refined No. 1" and it was like a mix between an Old Fashioned and a Rusty Nail. My wife ordered the "No. 112" and she loved it. Food was amazing. Beef Wellington blew me away with the tenderness and flavor. Mac & Cheese was elevated. Potato Pavé was perfectly golden. Carrots were alright, labneh didn't do much for it. All in all this is an amazing steakhouse that is a must if you live in Philly!
Superb.
Honestly, the best experience and meal I've had in a very long time. The second you walk into the door you are greeted with such a friendly environment that's classy and beautiful. The interior is small but the decor is classy creating a more romantic and chill environment. The service was exceptional. The waiter was attentive and sweet. Now the food, oh my dayz. Everything had me wanting more and more and if I didn't get full I'd order more. We got the oysters which were fantastic. Then we got the famous bone marrow toast and I now know why everyone raves about it. I would literally eat like 10 of these as my meal. The flavors were on point. Hands down the best dish. Then the ribeye was brilliant. Cooked to perfection and seasoned well. The baked Alaska was good, although I will say this was not my fav dish but my partner loved it. I think for me the run was a little too overpowering but the other desserts looked just as amazing. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great experience and amazing food.
This places vibes is just immaculate, feels like it took me
This places vibes is just immaculate, feels like it took me back in time and I love it. Very very romantic atmosphere, perfect for date nights or anniversary/birthday celebrations with your S.O. The presentation is on point, from the cute little clipboard menus to them letting you take pics of the steak before taking it to cut for you right in front of you (my fave part bc cutting steak is my least favorite thing to do lol.) And let's talk about the food, chefs kiss! Flavor is on point, loved loved loved the lemony seasoning on the octopus. Ugh so good. Bone marrow toast was another fave dish of mine. Staff was amazing, great experience here!
Total Disgrace!!
I flew in from Paris and was excited to invite my mother and family to Alpen Rose after hearing all the hype. A difficult reservation, but I thought it was worth it - oh wow, how I was so wrong. When we arrived we were informed through a hole in the door that the table wasn’t yet ready so we were shuffled over to the sister restaurant to sit at their bar and buy drinks. Is this done on purpose to push the alcohol consumption? After a 25 minute wait we were finally brought to our table. A load of bread and a tuna carpaccio was gracefully offered to help us forget the wait. After ordering dinner and opening our first bottle of wine we were serenaded by the sound of whaling fire alarms - they set off a fire in the kitchen!! A few minutes later we were told that we had to leave as the kitchen was now closed and the alarm were whaling in our ears. The manager (Eric) gracefully presented me with a bill for two bottles of wine - we didn’t even touch the second bottle - the waitress opened it in anticipation of our dinner that they cancelled on us. An interesting concept to charge clients for a second bottle they didn’t touch while being victims of a cancelled dinner ! No a single apology, just a “here is the bill - pay it!” After a short heated discussion the manager, Eric Sailor, finally accepted to remove the second bottle. If the manager and the establishment knew a bit about hospitality they would have apologised and mentioned that there was nothing to pay, but know. Not the case at all. I regret not having my dinner, but am happy I have understood the true colours of this establishment. Take my advice, stay far away!! The captor grill will welcome you with a smile and a friendly and professional staff !
Awful service and drinks, sure place to ruin your special occasion
Me and my wife were super excited to try the new and exciting place in Philly. So I thought why not do it as a special occasion for her 50th birthday. BIG MISTAKE! We arrived for our reservation at 5pm on Oct 27th and we’re immediately rushed to our seats right across the door. The server, middle aged man, who came off as old school know it all been in the steakhouse business for 20 years greeted us briefly and asked for our drinks. He did NOT go over the style of the menu, restaurant rules or anything else to ease us into new environment, esp. after we told him it’s our first time here. He also made zero acknowledgement of the fact that we’re celebrating a major milestone. We managed to read through the menu is the dark and order 2 drinks: a very plain cucumber margarita that had zero flavor and a smoked old fashion. When the drinks were brought to the table the server ripped the top of the cloche and walked away causing all the smoke to blow into my wife’s face instead of gently floating above my drink as it supposed to be. And as I watched another server properly do to a pair of male customers that were sitting near bookshelves area. Then things got even more bizarre as the server came back demanding an order to be put in and when we told him that we want to start with just appetizers he only then mentioned the “restaurant rules” of having to order everything at once. It took us a minute to digest these news as this is something I must say I never experienced at any places dining around the world unless it was all part of the unique experience. Since we weren’t giving any choice we settled on just ordering the apps. Well that apparently didn’t sit well with the manager of the place -Eric, who promptly arrived at our table, reiterated the “rules” and told us that if we’re not happy about it he’d gladly comp our drinks so we can call it a day as he needs to make room for other customers. Clearly we were not a priority customers for Eric or the server so we decided to cut our losses and leave as he suggested. In my nearly 50 years of existence I must say I’ve never been treated with such disrespect and discrimination being 2 women just trying to enjoy special occasions.
Salmon Cooked With Love ❤️
Amazing, yummy and delicious food. We went here as a family and friends group of 7. We had steak, salmon, asparagus, mashed potatoes, macaroni, cauliflower, oysters and duck. All of the food was worth the wait. We were a large group and everything was cooked to perfection. Our new favorite ❤️ restaurant!
Delicious food, fantastic service and an exquisite space.
Speakeasy vibes and great ambiance. Though nearly impossible to get a reservation, this spot is worth it!
I mentioned to my boyfriend that I wanted to come here for
I mentioned to my boyfriend that I wanted to come here for dinner. He surprised me with reservations! We came in on a Sunday evening at 5pm.Where so I start? You ring a bell in order to have your reservations checked and then you are let in. The restaurant is beautiful! Curved wooden ceiling, stunning chandeliers, rounded windows, and the list goes on! It is intimate with only twelve tables I believe. The service was incredible! We started with the rolls and bone marrow toast. We spilt the porterhouse and had the creamed spinach and a potato rosti as our sides. We cannot wait to go back and try different dishes!
We love Alpen Rose!!!They are definitely giving Barclay
We love Alpen Rose!!!They are definitely giving Barclay Prime a run for their money. Barclay was our go-to steakhouse, but that rank has been usurped by AR.1. Cool speakeasy vibe, dim and intimate ambiance. It's a pretty small place. Bar seating is only four count.2. Bone Marrow Toast - herbs, beef cheek, red wine - Favorite appetizer! 3. Tuna carpaccio with housemade potato chips was also very good.3. Octopus - fingerling, sumac, lemon confit - it was pretty good, but I would forgo this one. Potatoes were nice and tender. There was something julienned in there, and I'm guessing it's like myer lemon rind? No clue but whatever it was, there was a lot of it, and it was a bit overwhelming. We ended up trying to eat around it, but they were so entangled with the fresh greens within the dish.4. Beef wellington. I have been waiting all my life for this. I saw beef wellington at Gordon Ramsay's at Atlantic City, but I didn't get it due to trust issues. I had a knock-off Beef Wellington at HUP, but that doesn't count. I've never seen it again until here, and it was spectacular. The pastry puff was so soft and flaky, and the beef was so juicy. It comes with this to-die-for bordelaise. Everything about it was so perfect.5. Lobster Mac and cheese - so good! This can be hit or miss at places (e.g. very fishy). I like how they mince the lobster meat it's more homogenously mixed, so you get lobster in every bite! Some places just sprinkle lobster on top as if they're chives. Always a fan of capanelle too! 6. Forest mushrooms - I loved this. While I love mushrooms, I generally do not like mushroom sides because it tends to be extremely salty for me. It was delicious here.7. Chocolate souffle cake with salted caramel sauce a la mode - whoa! This was like an ultra-refined version of your molten lava cake. I don't even love chocolate, but this one was a winner. I'm excited to come back to try the pineapple upside down. 8. Amazing service! They cut your steak in front of you too! Last person to cut anything for me was my mom.9.Drinks No. 21 and No. 8 - also solid bourbon based choices. Go for the No 8. You will NOT be disappointed. I'm not providing any more spoiler alerts. If I still lived down the street I'd be here all the time!
This dining experience is special.
.. from the ambiance to the service to the food. Highly recommend for a special occasion, or just a regular Thursday night. Special shout-out to the cocktails and baked Alaska!
Visited here last week and didn't feel the meal lived up to
Visited here last week and didn't feel the meal lived up to the hype. We were excited to get a last minute reservation due to someone else cancelling. The service was friendly and professional from start to finish, but the food left much to be desired. We started with a couple of cocktails that were fantastic (No. 112 was my favorite) and ordered several appetizers. The wedge salad was great, but our clover rolls seemed to be slightly burnt and therefor had an unpleasant and bitter taste. We also tried the oysters rockefeller and agreed that we had tried much better at other restaurants. I had the lamb rack which I felt was good, but did not knock my socks off. He had the beef wellington and was unimpressed which was extra disappointing because he had been talking about it for days prior. Our sides, the pomme purre and the mac & cheese, weren't nearly as tasty as they looked online. The environment of the restaurant is super cozy and uniquely decorated. Definitely a cool experience with the speakeasy style entrance, but we just wish the food had lived up to what we had been promised in the reviews.
HIGHLY impressed with this steakhouse.
Came in for a late night dinner (reservations are sparse and the restaurant is small/intimate). When we arrived, we rang a bell and the host opened a small window and asked for the name on our reservation. He then opened the door and allowed us in. The restaurant is quaint and beautiful. It is perfect for date night. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I wasn't necessarily as impressed with our waiter. He seemed overwhelmed and his attention felt forced. We didn't love our waiter but really enjoyed Dana's passion in describing our food when she brought it to our table. She seemed so enthusiastic and sweet. I was also able to meet a couple of the kitchen staff, Jose and Alfredo, that were super amazing! Onto the best part, the food!! We started off with the octopus: the moment I knew I was in the right place. The octopus came with fingerling potatoes and a perfect lemon confit that gave the dish a perfect kick. Next, we ordered the Branzino and the Grass Fed Filet for our main course. For our sides we had the grilled broccoli and mac n cheese. Everything was FANTASTIC. The Branzino was deboned and perfectly cooked. So was the steak. It was exactly how I ordered it. The star of the sides was definitely the mac n cheese. It had a crispy top layer with a creamy and cheesy middle. Best mac n cheese I've had in a very LONG time!! Lastly, we had the baked Alaska for dessert and it was such a unique experience. I've never had anything like it. I simply cannot wait for my next visit here!! If you're going to visit, make sure you make plans well ahead of time!

This is my second time at Alpen Rose and it won't be my last. From the wizard of oz door to the intimate setting, this place has become a favorite of mine. The service here is phenomenal. The servers are so upbeat, accommodating and knowledgeable. I started off with a really refreshing drink, I can't remember the number but if you like tequila and cucumber, this is a fun refreshing option. The seafood tower was amazing. I could have done without the tuna, and not because it wasn't great but because I demolished the entire tower to myself, the tuna was seafood overload. The steak was cooked to perfection, I paired it with a delicious French Malbec. For dessert I had the apple pie with vanilla ice cream to go.

This was our second time here and I am convinced this is still one of the top 2 or 3 dining experiences in Phila and definitely the best steakhouse. Service was exceptional as were the drinks. My steak was best I have had in years. When my daughter had an issue with her chicken ( she just does not like wood grilled food) they graciously cooked a chicken dish just for her which was sublime. Yes, it is a hassle for non Center City residents to get here ( we did Uber), but it is well worth it. I honestly think if Michelin ever covered Phila, this restaurant would get rated highly. Staff is very attentive- like the 5 star establishments in NYC. I love the ambiance also, and as before, as we got here early we went next door to one of the owner's other establishments for a drink. A wonderful dining experience.
In awe of this place.
Best meal I've had in many years. Wellington: wow. Ribeye: wow. Even the salad (chopped) was amazingly good. Staff were friendly and "there". Will be back for sure

We came here on the recommendations of friends for a special night out. There was a party of four and we had a 30 minute wait for a table. They kept encouraging us to go get a drink next-door but we chose to walk around the block until about 30 minutes later. There is plenty of to see and do in Center City. If I had been more hungry, I would probably have been more upset at the wait. They did give us a complementary bone marrow toast as a thank you for the wait time. Drinks were great, the cocktail number 8 was quite strong With double proofed bourbon. It also came in flames next to the table, which is very exciting. They were also able to make a virgin cocktail for my husband who does not drink, and that was excellent with rosewater and honey. The ambience feels like a old school library at Harvard where they chose to put a dining hall.We had a variety of sides and mains to share as we wanted to try everything. Our friends raved about the Beef Wellington and the quality was impeccable. I also love that they will help you cut up the steak at a little station next to your table if you're splitting, which is what we did with the porterhouse. We even got the bone to take home for our friends dog. In terms of sides the mashed potatoes were definitely the best. But my personal favorite was the mushrooms, which had a hint of sour really cutting the overall heaviness of the meal. For dessert we had the Baked Alaska and the chocolate soufflé. At the end we all agreed that the Baked Alaska was much more exciting, but the attention to detail on the soufflé with the cookie crumbs was emblematic of the great evening. Almost took a star off for the wait but the service, ambiance and quality brought it back.
Not worth the money!!!!
This place is not horrible but it is absolutely over-priced for the quality of the food and really the whole experience in general. The oysters were good and they do have a kick ass hot sauce! We also ordered the grilled octupus and that was a complete joke. They gave us three small pieces that were lost in a sea of wedged potatoes that were literally like the ones you buy at the grocery store and bake for your kids. Epic fail! I will say the sides were actually pretty solid. We got the mushrooms and spinach. Not as good as other steak houses but serviceable. The steak is where my coworker and I had our heads explode. I got the NY Strip, which was noted as being 14 oz. I literally got a steak that was no more than 9 or 10. Additionally, it was pencil thin and had little flavor. To be canidd, it was absolutely awful. It looked like a thin sliced, store bought strip you throw on the grill at home. My coworker got the ribeye, which by the looks of it was pretty solid. However, it was the most over marbled steak he had ever had. 70% plus of it was fat. It was almost not edible. Truth be told, we would have sent both steaks back but it was getting late and we were tired from travel, so we just muscled through it. Lastly, the place is tiny and terribly loud. You have to yell to have a conversation and they pack you in like sardines. I would not go back.
