Hmm I want to like this restaurant but everything from
Hmm I want to like this restaurant but everything from food, to service, ambience and decor just pale in comparison to my other Michelin experiences in Korea and France. My family members who either had dined at Michelin-rated restaurants or never had, agreed that we were not impressed. We had the 5-course menu and only one dish had both the creativity and good complements of flavors and textures. The dessert, which is the part I always look forward to, was just average, that we did not care to finish.

A one michelin star restaurant in the Goodwood Park Hotel, went there to celebrate my wife's birthday for lunch on a weekday. We took the 3 course lunch set which I would say is very reasonably priced for a michelin rated place (although you do pay extra $10 to upgrade some of the courses, and you should). I got the horsehair crab to start off, wife got the crispy tofu with foie gras, both dishes were excellent, a great fusion of asian and french techniques. We both got the boston lobster pasta for the 2nd course, I felt that the pasta was cooked well, and had a nice spice to it. Lobster was ok but would have liked some more of it. For desert she got the Apple tart tatin which was pretty good, I got the Amou strawberry which was ok at best. Her dessert did have a surcharge as did the crab and foie gras so it is a bit more than the advertised $39, but still one of the best fine dining lunch deals in the city. Service was excellent.

4.5 stars. One Michelin star fine dining at the Goodwood Park Hotel. Food is modern European with an Asian touch.Everything tastes good (4*) and some dishes taste great (5*) - details by dishes below. - Bread basket - quite standard, yes it's more innovative than your typical restaurant bread basket but nothing special for a starred restaurant- Beef and beet root salad - ok / average- Crab in potato soup - hit and miss on our table - I quite like the dish but some find the crab meat too seafood-y in smell and the potato soup too rich/creamy and that overall it just didn't come together- Fried tofu in foie gras puree - excellent dish - rich foie gras smell/taste and the tofu is crisp-fried to perfection- Lobster pasta (cooked with olive oil)- terrific dish and probably the highlight of the meal - a very simple yet extremely well-executed dish. - Seared duck with duck confit ravioli - the duck confit ravioli is a nice touch and tastes excellent. The seared duck though is quite underwhelming - have had much better duck elsewhere- Iberico pork jowl - another excellent dish - the pork is tender and the skin crispy - a solid main course- Desserts: the apple tartin and strawberry sorbet are great - simple but well-executedSolid wine selection. Good professional service as expected from a restaurant of this caliberWould recommend!

The restaurant was located at the first floor of the hotel, with the entrance facing the open carpark. There was 3 different lunch sets available with 3 course (S$39++), 4 course (S$55++), and 5 course (S$88++). I decided on the 5 course lunch set (S$88++).The meal started with pipping hot Potato Bread served in a wooden box, accompanied with truffle butter. The butter was quite dense and the bread was quite savoury on its own.CHUTOTOTartare| Turnip | Saikyo MisoRefreshing cubes of raw fish, accompanied with crunchy rice pops and crunchy vegetables.CRISPY TOFUHomemade Tofu| Wild Mushrooms ย | Foie Gras Emulsion .The dish reminded one of agedashi tofu, simple but in a harmonizing way.BRITTANY CODSmoked Shimejil| Burnt Leek| Ponzu EmulsionPresented with a piece of kai lan by the side, it was rather chinese style. The fish was juicy and chucky.OHMIHorseradish| Red Cabbage ย | Sansho PepperAlthough the meat looked rather fatty when sliced. It simply melted in the mouth easily.MANGOCremeaux| Yogurt| MyogaRather tart and refreshing to end the meal with.It was accompanied with a cup of coffee. One can't help but noticed that the post on the restaurant's instagram stated that the set lunch came with a complimentary glass of wine ย . ย One would appreciate if the staff had informed one of the promotion which was not stated on the menu.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of my favorite restaurants.
I have had many fond memories, special events. Since winning a Michelin star, their food continues to improve. In terms of variety, quality, creativity and presentation, Alma is in the same league as other great restaurants. What makes Alma stand out are it's flavors. Exec Chef Johari and his Chef de Cuisine Zaini, Singaporeans lend unique flavors to their dishes. Every bite is an adventure. Front of the house is helmed by long term Manager and Sommeller Saravana who makes sure the service is impeccable. Nothing is too difficult and if you need something special, they will move mountains to get it done. Price wise, it's in the upper end, but considering it's a Michelin star restaurant, frankly a bargain. If you don't want to burn a hole in your wallet, consider heading there for lunch. At under $40 per person for a 3 course meal, you can sample chef's artistry in the cheap, though I warn you that you will likely go for the full monte dinner 6 or 8 course menu at a later date. Highly recommended restaurant, they change their menu every 4 months or so, so you shouldn't be bored.

So I booked Alma because 1) it's highly recommended as a 1 star michelin 2) ideal location on Orchard Rd and walking distance from the Marriott where we were staying and 3) duh - it's my name! ;)Upon first arrival we were a smidge concerned as we were the only people in the restaurant at 7:30pm. However, after a few minutes of being warmly welcomed by the staff my friend & I knew we had made a good decision. The food further cinched that notion as our meal was absolutely delicious. We did the 5 course tasting menu with the wine pairing, and every dish that came out was more delicious than the prior one. Two of the standout dishes for me were the crispy pork belly with mustard and kale (cooked perfectly crispy) and the chilled angel hair past with seaweed and lobster. ย The wines were also perfectly suited for each dish and the pours were very generous, although admittedly the sommelier didn't always pour the paired wine when we got each dish - not a huge deal. The restaurant did fill up as the evening progressed yet we were happy to see the service remained very attentive even so. All in all, we were very impressed with Alma and both felt it may be under-rated as a one star. My friend & I have both been to many michelins restaurants and IMHO our experience was closer to a two at least. Definitely worth a visit folks! :)
