Average dining
My husband and I were recommended Akaoni from the locals. Unfortunately our dining experience was less than to be desired. We booked on the day, the hostess was cool and quite rude on the phone when my husband asked for a space for two. When we arrived at the restaurant the hostess looked at us and said we didn’t have a booking, despite the restaurant not being full. Finally she let us sit down at one of the tables. The menu is limited, while the food was pleasant, there are other Japanese restaurants with better food and nicer hospitality. Consider other options for dinner in Carmel by the sea!

Small quaint spot. Delicious dumplings to start. Fabulous Fresh sushi. Had Chefs choice and added some extras. Would go back for sure!

We've picked 4 food items from the menu and two drinks, waitress said that we need to order minimum of $60.00.( she is standing there and calculating my order I guess) I was very surprised,,I've paid for the drinks and left. I also own a business, I couldn't tell my customer such a thing! Spend this much or I don't serve you. They didn't like my $44.00 order. Shame on the owner of this restaurant!! I mean it!! Ungrateful people!!

Very rude. I understand this place is so popular and sometimes is fully booked. However they don't even let me finish my words and hang off the phone while I as still talking. What kind customer service it is?
Be the first to ReplyThe best sushi ever!
My wife and I were the guest of our daughter and SIL. SIL set up a chefs tasting (only two per night.) and it was stellar! I never saw a menu. My SIL had raved about this place and now it is all clear. I can't recall all of the dished but it was about 12. Some one bite, some a bit more. All outstanding. I need to follow up with my SIL to get directions on setting this up in the future. This has ruined every other sushi restaurant I have ever visited. We found the chef and servers friendly and soft spoken. The entire evening was a delight

Such a hidden gem, so hidden, there is no signage for this restaurant. My friend and I had just finished the 17 mile drive and wanted to catch an early dinner. I saw on Yelp they opened at 5:00. This quaint little Japanese restaurant seats only a handful of people at a time with the Master Sushi Chef and 1 server. Service was excellent. The place is very clean. I noticed all tables fill shortly after opening, regulars in the neighborhood who knew the Chef well.
Upon sitting we ordered Sake and Beer and were given complimentary Edamame. We ordered the Jumbo Soft Shell Crab with Ponzu, Snapper, Salmon, Yellowtail and Toro Nigiri. We also ordered the Yellow Tail Green Onion Roll along with a Salmon Skin Roll. The quality of the fish was excellent along with the preparation. I would definitely go back when visiting the area again.
Funny thing, the next day we went back to Carmel and went to the Farmers Market where I saw the women who was serving us the night before buying produce and she recognized me and came over to say hello. Now I know why this place is a favorite with the locals.

You go here for the food
The food here is fantastic. The homemade tofu is heaven!!! It is worth a visit if you are in Carmel.
Be the first to ReplyVery fresh and good sushi
My boyfriend and I came here for dinner right after we got into town. It was recommended by our hotel concierge, who said she had heard nothing but good things, except that they seem to be closed a lot. Lucky for us, they were open.
The restaurant was very good. I ordered a sashimi plate and everything was very fresh and well cut. We also ordered a few rolls all of which were great. They didn't overdue the rice like some places do to cut costs. The hot sake actually had a distinct flavor. It didn't taste like your run of the mill hot sake.
The menu was fairly limited as far as roll choices. It is not one of those restaurants with 50 sushi rolls to choose from. They had maybe 7 on the menu. Very highly recommend this place to any sushi lover.
Still the best and most authentic.
We went back for a special occasion and splurged on the most expensive sashimi plate on the menu (superb), followed by the wonderful house-made salmon egg special
Be the first to ReplyHad a last minute great meal here
We thought we had a reservation at another restaurant, and discovered it was for the wrong night. We ended up here, and were not disappointed. Food was fresh and tasted great. Our server was good, had to listen carefully due to her oriental accent, but that was part of the charm of this small place.
Be the first to ReplyAuthentic, artful, exquisite
This is the best sushi in Monterey County. The chef and staff are Japanese, the quality of the fish is superior, the presentation is artful. Sit at the sushi bar to watch the masterful creations unfolding. It's a tiny location, so plan ahead and make reservations.
Be the first to ReplyVery Good food but not quite up to Japan Standards
Food was good, service pleasant, nice ambiance, reasonably priced. Perhaps this is an unreasonable standard, but just back from Japan, this doesn't quite measure up to what we were hoping to relive.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the few good Japanese restaurants but very poor service
Food is really good, and pretty close to what you get in Japan, but the owner and staff are not friendly. If you don't mind the quality of service but want good food, then this place is for you.
