I have been to Japan twice, and this restaurant in Singapore is exactly the same concept in Japan. Amazing food, crafted by the chef Brandon. Each course that came to our table was breathtaking and so delicious. The beef melted in my mouth. If I were to come back to Singapore, I would definitely come back here. When we were shown the lunch menu, there was NO mention of any change in dishes. Hence we proceeded to order the Singapore Restaurant Week prix fixe menu. Towards the end of the meal, we realized that we have not been served the Chawan & enquired with staff. Staff simply replied "changed to cold tofu (you had earlier)." Similarly, nothing was mentioned when dessert was served, except that it's "torched sponge cake with whipped cream & some normal chocolate (cream) underneath". The sponge cake was dry & looked like an attempt to plate some "leftovers" from the fridge/pantry. This is definitely different from what's stated on the menu, ie, "Binchotan Charcoal Grilled Butter Cake with Smoked Cream". Quite shocked by Akanoya's lack of integrity. It doesn't swallow well when we ordered A but was delivered B. No notification of the replacement, no attempts to apologize or seek our understanding upon serving etc. ***** The staff who served our claypot rice mentioned that we can ask for unlimited refills of the claypot rice. When we asked for our first refill, a staff simply took 1 of our bowl away, came back with a bowl of plain white rice, & walked away without saying anything. Feeling puzzled, we asked another staff about the claypot rice. The second staff explained that it was getting late for the chef, so they have stopped preparing claypot rice. He also said that if we had come earlier, we could have as much as we wanted. Excuse me, it was your staff who informed us that we could ask for refill, just a while ago. Even a casual family restaurant staff would have alerted us that their kitchen was closing soon & if we had any last orders. But nobody alerted us in this case & definitely no apologies made when we were served the bowl of plain white rice. We are also not gluttons & did not plan to ask for multiple refills! ***** As if the experience was not bad enough already, here's the conversation (in brief) when we were getting our bill: staff: "It's your first time here right? I'm sorry for the bad experience. I'll feedback to the team & see what we can do about it. If you come back for dinner, it will be better." me: "i don't think we'll be coming back anytime soon" staff: "I understand. This is considered a fine dining so it's not like you can come everyday ..." us: "it's not about the money! Today's experience is so bad, why would we even want to return?!" Quote from their homepage, "Since its inaugural opening in 2008, Akanoya Robatayaki has served many well-known celebrities and ministers who are now regulars to the restaurant." Is there some sort of customer discrimination at Akanoya? Lunch experience won't be as nice as Dinner because Lunch is of a lower revenue? Only celebrities or ministers can afford to dine here often? Because we are not them, you can simply change our dishes & not provide an equal service standard? We left the restaurant feeling terrible & insulted. Probably the worst lunch ever

In summary, it was my last night in Singapore with my European relatives that I haven’t seen since covid. We sat down at 815pm and after 30mins a flustered waiter came and said, right, so set menu in $300/head. Now it was feeling late so we said we’d prefer a la carte but the menu didn’t have prices on a bunch of things. The waiter said: no problem! I’ll bring out some dishes, you tell me what you like and we order more if them. You can have what you want and I’ll look after you. With the benefit of hindsight, we should have asked questions but it was getting late, the waiter was so charming and we felt in good hands. We also just wanted to eat as my 80 year old uncle was getting tired. Well…some strange dishes started to arrive. Squished sardines that formed a cracker, whole shells with chewy tasteless meat inside that we sent back. We reminded the waiter we wanted mainstream food and my niece was vegetarian. Some delicious chicken skewers arrived and the Waghu beef skewers were fine. Now it was 1030pm so stopped the food and asked for the bill. Yet food kept coming out: here’s the whole fish you ordered. We sent it back reminding then we were just waiting on our bill. mushrooms arrived, green chilli’s which we tried to send back and they said: no! You asked for vegetarian! I started getting frustrated so walked out to reception to find the manager. He left me waiting 10mins and finally came out with the bill for the set menu of $2k!. A very frustrating 30mins ensued where he itemised the bill and went through line by line what we had eaten and what we hadn’t. Turns out they were charging us for things we hadn’t eaten and finally he begged us to pay for the things we hadn’t eaten or the owner would dock it off his wages. Our lovely waiter wouldn’t get paid either. So awful. We ended up paying double than we ate and left tired, unsatisfied and $1.2k poorer. Such a sad way to end our trip. I’m sure there is an explanation on their side and I don’t think they were intentionally trying to rip off the tourists. My suspicion is they didn’t communicate what the deal was and didn’t listen to our needs. I’ll finish by saying regardless of how this happened, paying $50 for 5 little skewered tasteless beans each, almost $150 for a handful of crab claws (some tender, some inedible bc so chewy) and $40 per waghu skewer with 3 morsels of meat is nothing short of highway robbery. The food wasn’t great and the cost of it is outrageous.

My family of 5 (all adults) came here to celebrate a birthday. It's worth noting that there is no menu with fixed prices. You'll select the food items that gets freshly grilled, and hope for the best for your wallet when the bill eventually comes. The food itself was pretty good! The seafood was fresh, the skewers were delicious. But for the tail-end of our experience left us disappointed. We'd placed an order for more skewers and waited nearly 45 mins with nothing coming our way. Eventually, we were starting to get hungry again and asked the wait staff when our items would be coming. It was only then that they informed us that some of the items we'd ordered (nearly an hour ago!) were no longer available. I wish they'd kept the same amount of attentiveness when we were placing our (ubknwoinglt expensive) orders all the way to the end of our stay. Unfortunately, it felt like once they'd secured the big items, they disregarded the rest of our experience. 😔 For what you'll eventually fork out, you'd get the same quality food, more consistent service and overall experience at other offerings.

Special thanks to Javier and William of making a wonderful night for us. My wife enjoyed her birthday dinner very much. (Thanks again for the small birthday cake to have a good closing of the night)
Javier has been very patience in explaining the menu and price
Not forgetting the rest of the staffs that are very attentive to our needs.
We are well fed, quality of the dishes are good. We have tiger prawn (rice stuffed in the prawn head is a master stroke), gaint clams, skewer beef, pork, chicken, plus other veg and sweet potato (butter sauce is out of this world! Yummy)
This place is not a cheap eat. Like most premium restaurants.
Not a bad choice to pamper ourselves in certain important dates.
Pricey but quality food. Worth it!
Once you enter, you will be greeted by a very traditional Japan-style welcome and the staff all speak Japanese (although it must be pointed out, they are not true blue Japanese per se). The welcome, plus the overall deco, already feels very Japanese.
Next, you will be seated and you can either directly tell the waiter/waitress what you want, or you can ask them to tell you what is on the menu today and you select what you want. The food display infront of you is typically what is available and almost all of it are grilled. They do have a drinks menu, as well as rice/ cha soba and udon which is obviously prepared in the kitchen.
The price is typically not shared between the waiter/waitress to you. If you are not sure, ask the price first before ordering. This is to avoid any shocks when paying the bills. Remember, they will not tell you the price unless you ask them for it, in which case they will happily share with you.
Next, the food quality. Oh my gosh it is legit good guys. All the food are grilled to perfection and the seafood is fresh. I am typing this 5hours after I had my meal and i still cant forget the taste of the fresh tiger prawn in my mouth!
Overall, highly recommend.
Tourist trap - bad cooking, bad service, rip off prices.
We have supported this place since it first opened many years ago. It was always expensive but the food, cooking and service used to be top notch. That was 10 years ago.
Visiting Singapore again we dropped by and this evening's experience was dreadful.
Food:- Great and beautiful ingredients ruined in front of our eyes. Overcooked dried up tiger prawns, red snapper, clams over cooked to the point of being inedible; yaki onigiri that was so soaked in soy sauce it was salty beyond belief. No sense of order to the way the food arrived. Our chef who looked the part must have got his arms from body building as they can't have been a result of years of experience cooking.
Service:- indifferent and non-caring. Get them in and get them out. The traditional shouting usually so entertaining was so loud and so often conversation was very difficult.
Pricing:- $886 for 3 people without alcohol. A single clam is $36. A beef stick with 3 small cubes $40. A small side plate with a few pieces of poorly cut sashimi $68.
Stay away. These folks do not deserve to be in business

Get a grip on the prices
Went there as a group, and therefore did not ask for prices items per item...total rip off to pay 100sgd for a slice of melon, 60sgd for a skewer etc...absolutely ridiculous prices
Be the first to ReplyFood and the atmosphere is good
We went with some overseas friends. They never have Robatayaki before. They felt that it was fascinating. The food itseld was tasty. The atmosphere was good. We tried almost every food and everybody were enjoyed. However, it is a pricey place.
Be the first to ReplyJapanese traditional style "Robata-yaki"
Japanese traditional style "Robata-yaki". One of the best Japanese restaurants in Singapore. They choose very nice meat and vegetables. All foods are really delicious. But be careful, there is no price list for food. They are about 6-40 SGD each. We paid 450 SGD for 2 adults and 1 child. If you have enough money, you should try this restaurant. I promise you will be satisfied.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Japanese food
I had sushi and sashimi at the bar. The place is crowded and very popular- better to book. Food was fresh, service quick and unobtrusive. Popular with families
Be the first to ReplyAwesome experience, fantastic food...but be very aware of price
This is one of the best meals I've had in the many decades I've been around. The beef (turns out its Wagyu) was a luxury I never anticipated allowing my self. the texture and true beef flavor in a buttery texture was amazing. Ny friend had to have one more at the end of the meal it was that unbelievably satisfying and delicious. You could say he had one more for his desert.
I had eggplant, peppers, yakitori. another friend had huge fresh scallops and the biggest prawns I've ever seen. All reported as delicious as the rest.
One caution, there is no menu, you choose from the food options displayed on your "table". each of us were a bit surprised when we had each spent about SGD200. In reading other reviews, the same thing happened.
For a night and a meal you will never forget, come to Akanoya. Make it a special night and event. You won't regret it.
Can't even call it day light robbery it was very late......
We had a tonic water and coke to drink, 2 pieces of chicken, a small noodle soup and some rice and £75 later were now looking for the Macdonalds we should have gone to in the first place. No price list, very little translation yet your presented with a bill at the end, beyond the prices of some Chelsea restaurants I've had to be rolled out of.....AVoid avoid avoid.....
