2nd Ave Deli New York Reviews from The Last Year
A trip to NY wouldn't be complete without a few trips to
A trip to NY wouldn't be complete without a few trips to 2nd Ave Deli when I'm staying in Manhattan. I lived on W 96th street for a long time and had a large number of deli's to choose from. My friend 'Ben' wasn't in the city then and the 2nd Ave Deli and was always my weekly stop. I went to Manhattan recently and enjoyed them like the old days! I'll add a yummy picture soon. Where I live there's zero deli's, so you're stuck with supermarket sliced meat!
Service TERRIBLE! Short, caddy, abrupt, made you feel like
Service TERRIBLE! Short, caddy, abrupt, made you feel like hurry up eat and get the heck out. Don't got time for you! Not helpful at all. Food was good, loved that it had a variety of options for those who didn't want the pastrami sandwich. Portion size on the pastrami was very stingy compared to Katz generous portion for the price was similar. Just disappointed in the service. Won't return back even if food was good! SERVICE matters and this establishment lacked it! Everyone had a RBF! Go to Katz!
That may have been one of the best hot pastrami sandwiches
That may have been one of the best hot pastrami sandwiches I've ever eaten. And I can't believe I ate the whole thing but I did, and enjoyed every bite. The service was prompt, friendly, and helpful. It was a terrific spot to introduce my husband to an authentic Jewish deli experience. We also got a pint of their matzoh ball soup ("Jewish penicillin") and some black and white cookies to go. I haven't felt so sated in a long time.
Cute little Jewish deli not far from Grand Central Station.
The matzoh ball soup is just what my Jewish friend's grandma suggested for a cold while in the city. Went down so nicely! My family had frankfurters and potato pancakes. We enjoyed the pickles and loved the slaw! Cookies were a great finishing touch. Staff were so observant but not on top of us the whole time - felt right at home!
$27 for a pastrami sandwich, ridiculous.
..kasha varnish pasta was dry and nit very edible. Will never go back. *No rating
When you think of a New York Deli, 2nd Avenue Deli is
When you think of a New York Deli, 2nd Avenue Deli is exactly what you should think! We were warmly greeted when we entered and escorted to a seat by the window. Then they took our order, and brought the table the best pickles I've ever had, along with a heaping bowl of delicious Cole slaw. Then the star of the deli arrived, perfect pastrami sandwiches and crispy fries. The end of the meal was just as magical, complimentary black & white cookies. It simply doesn't get better than this restaurant. It's a perfect setting to soak in the New York Deli experience.
Very poor
Don't waste your money if you're looking to see if it's as good as Katz Deli...it is not. No ambiance. Half the meat you'd get at Katz, I've been there. Bread was dry and falling apart. Meat was thin , very thin but flavorful. More expensive than Katz. Servers arguing Very quiet Went in a recommendation that it was as good as Katz....Def not, don't waste your time or money.
It's not cheap but lordy is it good.
Just DoorDashed a pastrami sandwich with a few extra pickles to my hotel and, at least, it was cheaper than room service and a ton better. A $27 pastrami sandwich is well, a lot, so I held off on the potato salad, drank water, and put all my monetary bets on the sandwich. And they paid off. Great pastrami is hard to find and this is real deal. I'd do it again. Though, were I hungrier, I wish they had a triple decker with pastrami and chopped liver and I didn't see one on the menu. For next time.

First stop to eat on our trip to Big Apple and it was amazing. Delicious food , pleasant attentive and brisk service were appreciated. Free pickles and cabbage plus complimentary cookies at the end were very much appreciated.
I pick up from the UPTOWN Second Ave Deli in the 70's about
I pick up from the UPTOWN Second Ave Deli in the 70's about ten times a year. But atypically, today which is 5/20/24, I found myself outside the older downtown similarly named in Second Ave Deli on East 33rd Street, which I occasionally frequented before I retired. The difference is stark. I would recommend the UPTOWN restaurant to diners wanting to sample a decent Manhattan deli. I would discourage anyone from eating at the DOWNTOWN location. This applies to the food itself, and even more strikingly to the service. The staff UPTOWN is sincerely friendly and informed. The several staffers by the door at the DOWNTOWN location for lunch have their daily customers whom they know and joke with pleasantly. But they are utterly unconcerned with anyone else, except to hustle them inside to a table. The takeout customers they do not know are treated with a combination of total indifference and unhelpfulness that I found astonishing. Frankly, it was the most unpleasant and scamlike takeout experience I've had in years. I am in my 80's and have been a Manhattan resident since 1970. I am a retired lawyer and have zero of an axe to grind. The food was much less reliable downtown --- watered down applesauce, inedible and unrecognizable Russian dressing for an otherwise decent brisket sandwich, coleslaw nor provided at all, a far more meager inclusion of pickles, and a slightly less well prepared potato pancake.
This is a great deli.
The sandwiches are exceptional. The prices are a little expensive, but one sandwich could easily feed two people. The ingredients and flavors on the sandwich are top-notch. The gentleman that created my sandwich provided great customer service. I would visit this deli again.

This place is the REAL DEAL.
If you are looking for a legit Jewish Deli in NY, look no further. Menu is huge with all the expected sandwiches with meat piled high, but also all the delicious Jewish food classics, like Chicken Noodle Soup, knishes, stuffed cabbage, gefilte fish - you name it! Meals also come with the traditional pickles and cole slaw delivered to your table and cookies afterwards! I had to have the stuffed cabbage and this was literally exactly like my Grandma from Poland used to make, sweet and sour with the raisins. Not too sweet, not too sour, and huge! It was practically the size of a burrito. Husband's corned beef was delicious. Of course, brown mustard served on the side for the sandwiches and the knishes. Absolutely will make it every trip to NY now!
This is such a nice classic deli, and the food was
This is such a nice classic deli, and the food was great! Matzoh ball soup: 9/10 This was one of the best matzoh ball soups ever! The matzoh ball was so soft and flavorful. I loved it. The broth was fine, but the matzoh ball was delicious. Latkes: 8.5/10 Very crispy, well-made latke. Enjoyed! It's really big. Pastrami sandwich: 7/10 The bread was good, but dry at all, but the pastrami was a bit too thinly cut and lean. Not my favorite. Challah French toast: 9.5/10 This is delicious! Perfectly crisped up and fluffy. The challah soaks up the sugar so well!
One of 10 best restaurants in NYC - terrific food & service - this is where locals eat
Ten stars. No waiting and fantastic food. Even before we order, slaw and pickels were brought to the table. We had two sandwiches, one corned beef, one pastrami. they were TERRIFIC. Virtually no fat. Friendly, rapid service. We heard from people in NYC that this is considered the top local deli and we agree. STRONGLY recommend.
OMG!! What has happened to this place? We had planned on
OMG!! What has happened to this place? We had planned on going there today but my brother-in-law law and his wife, bonafide food mavens, advised against it as they were there twice within the past few weeks and said it sucks nowadays. What used to be a fabulous place has become crappy and way overpriced. How sad
Watery pea and barley soup.
Cold fries. Really nice people working there. The felafel looked good.

The hot corned beef was great! It's tasty without being overly salty. The ambience is great and gives you that retro feeling. Unfortunately, the service was understaffed.

My food, the pastrami sandwich, was pretty decent, but in no way justifies the $27 price tag (not including tax and tip). The meat often felt stringy--hard to bite and got stuck in my teeth. But on its own outside of the sandwich it was very tasty. I also ordered the potato pancake--It was alright. I could and probably will go my whole life without ever craving another one. The service was acceptable, but nothing spectacular. However, the cookies they laid down at the end of my meal were quite delicious, the deli's take on a black and white cookie. Stop by if your pockets are fat or you really love a pastrami... or don't, it's not that great.
Classic Deli! The food is wonderful, just like Grandma's
Classic Deli! The food is wonderful, just like Grandma's matzo ball soup (I love all of it) and pastrami as delicious as I have ever had. 2nd Avenue Deli also provides pickles and cole slaw which are both excellent. The service is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The ambiance is classic deli with a side of schmaltz. Five Stars! This was my second time visiting and each time has my mouth watering to come back.
A go to when I'm in the mood for traditional deli like
A go to when I'm in the mood for traditional deli like corned beef , pastrami & tongue. One of my favorites.
Their food is decent I can't deny that.
But what I can deny is their decency towards their customers. The guy at front insulted me when I asked them to ensure they watched over my belonging they said I could not bring inside. Specifically saying "oh that's a cheap item no one will steal it." I decided to leave and on my way out another worker told me I'm "too sensitive" and to stop being upset about their rude attitude. I'm really disappointed that I need to give a bad review but I'm being honest. They really are rude and don't care to be kind to people. Some workers are great but those 2 main guys are arrogant and are creating a big Chillul H-Shem.
I love 2nd Ave deli, they have great authentic kosher items
I love 2nd Ave deli, they have great authentic kosher items and I have been a happy customer in the past. Sadly I will not be returning. Iv never taken out soup from here and decided to today but left extremely frustrated because a pint of matzo ball soup was 30$ after taxes. I couldn't believe it and frankly it's just robbery. I understand inflation but I think this is absurd. I was dumbfounded at the register but when I got home I'm sad to say it was not worth the hefty price tag.
This place is horrible with rude staff.
They don't take Apple Pay and I requested help and they just chastised me for not being "a normal person" for not having my wallet instead of using any kindness seeing how stressed I was about this. They are far too overpriced to be treating people this way. The waiter who was rude should be fired for giving them such a bad name. All I wanted was some soup, get with the times! Everyone takes Apple Pay but you. Get rid of your dinosaur staff who doesn't know how to treat people and maybe you'll have more business. Idiots.
Poor service- I am never going back.
The customer facing team was unfriendly and rude.
Disappointed
Very disappointed in the pastrami sandwich. $27 for a less than average sandwich (dry, smallish). It was not even close to what I remember it being years ago (sadly). Don't waste your money.
So disappointed from previous trips
This review is for the uptown location. My son took me for lunch. I had a pastrami sandwich. A previous visit to 33st resulted in my having a memorable melt in your mouth experience. Not do this time. Total disappointment sadly. A very firm tough slices of meat resembling nothing of the previous glory. Of course the price was higher.
Poor sandwich
pastrami in pastrami sandwich had too much gristle. Fat on meat is fine but not gristle. Grisle should be trimmed I won't be back.
Yummy Jewish delicatessen
Service was amazing. Matzo ball soup was very good and was light and fluffy. Not too salty. Amazing knish’s and was piping hot! Brisket was very good. Pastrami was amazing and was falling apart in the best way. Krepela was very good. Overall an amazing experience and was worth the $!
Amazing pastrami
Amazing place to eat pastrami. Traditional restaurant in NY close to Central Park. Well attended, pleasant, good service.
Perfect!
Everything was perfect! When you are seated, a server brings each diner a bowl of coke slaw and two pickles. I enjoyed a bowl of matzoh ball soup with two added kreplach. Delicious! Then I had part of a potato knish. My dining companion enjoyed soup, too, and a triple decker meat sandwich. The service was great and we had a lovely, memorable lunch.
Great, worth the visit
Traditional place with very well-defined offerings, but with the confidence that what they serve is of high quality and delicious.
Yum!
Typical kosher deli. Great food. Decent service. The black and white cookies are to die for. And the matza ball soup is amazing. But not the place for a vegetarian.

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
