1928 Beacon Hill Boston Reviews from The Last Year
Food was decent enough.
But that is not enough. The restaurant has several eating areas--not dining rooms--that are small, crowded and very noisey. Perhaps the thinking is this could be part of the charm of a Beacon Hill eatery. Precious, but not true. This interrupts ones enjoyment. There must be some effort being put into sound control, perhaps placing felt or some other fablic under each table to help stifle sound done very effectively at Antonia's in Key West or investing some commercial sound blocks. To make matters worse, one of the magagers sat at a table for nearly an hour or so and engaged in very animated conversation. He was asked to tone it down without much success. Eventually they left as did we. Probably not to return..
Second time here.
First time was close to their opening around a year ago. Both times this restaurant has been underwhelming. First time I've had a tuna tartare with this little flavor. Two of my friends asked for dirty martinis. Drinks took a while to get there and when they came, martinis weren't dirty at all. I got two manhattans, but with the weak pours they give, they may have equaled one cocktail if you combined the two of them. Same issue with my friends' wine pours, they were weak. I eat a lot of oysters, but wouldn't call myself an oyster expert by any means. I judge an oyster by when I eat a good one, in my head I say "dayummmn" then have another. I had one oyster here, gave the rest to the others at the table. Oysters came to $56 for a dozen. Steep. Ordered a Diet Coke when my thimble sized manhattans ran out. It was $5 and flat. Didn't have anymore after the first sip. The filet mignon was ok, but is that even possible to mess up? If you spend the same money at Abe & Louie's that I spent here, the meal, the seafood, the service, and the POURS, will be 10x better. Decor is nice in that place, but as my friend and I discussed after the dinner, "you gotta earn those prices". 1928 beacon has not.
isn't that a wonderful picture of the $27 dollar crab cake
isn't that a wonderful picture of the $27 dollar crab cake app. well we (4) ate there last night, had the dish, consisting of one crab cake and a smear of sauce, mostly consisted of a tasteless binder for what crab there was. we call BS on the pictures here. yes, we said something, but got no useful response. the service was sparse, asked for a second! drink after the meal was 85% complete. could be training or short staff but do not think so. food was not 'to die for'. sorry, but just not up to expectations.
This place is a must! The coconut shrimp app plus the claw
This place is a must! The coconut shrimp app plus the claw chowder were out of control! The oysters we delicious! The Cesar salad was fresh and crisp, perfect amount of dressing and the filet was cooked to perfection and tender. Ambiance is super cute for pictures too! Desserts were beautiful, personal favorite was the cheesecake.
Wonderful experience.
Food was excellent and service was even better. We are visiting Boston and could not be happier with our meal and the atmosphere, which is hard to find when you're not a local.
In general, come for the drinks & ambience but not the food
In general, come for the drinks & ambience but not the food or table service. We both had the new to the menu, swordfish with couscous. The fish portion was small in a soup of couscous and greens/vegatables. Tasty but no "wow factor". My companion's fish was under cooked & returned. By the time it was brought back, I was done. Our waiter pretty much disappeared between our order & the check. So go for the drinks/vibe & go elsewhere.
Excellent cocktails and atmosphere.
Jordon, is an AMAZING mixologist!!! Vibe of restaurant and bar is a mix of old Hollywood and vintage Miami. Staff is knowledgeable and helpful in choosing best cocktails for personal taste.
I was truly so excited to try this place.
I found it on social media and my other friend who I was having dinner with mentioned it was in an article for top 10 hidden gems of Boston. Walking in, the place is beautiful. Awesome flowers, decor and lighting. Our reservation was at 7:15 and we weren't seated until 7:50/8:00pm. I could tell our waiter was overwhelmed but he was also friendly so being patient wasn't a problem. Appetizers came- the shellfish tower was missing a main ingredient (and the reason why we ordered it) it was missing stone crab. The other app was very nice tuna crudo. Then about 45 minutes later our salads arrived, which clearly our waiter forgot about because the table was set with steak knives. Both times for the appetizer course and the salad course, we had to ask for share plates. Our drinks stayed empty and we waited long for them to come. I was actually the one refilling water for the table. Then the main course came. My girlfriend's entree had a rubber band in her dish... the manager briefly came over and apologized. My gf mentioned she didn't want anything but they brought over a new entree twice that we sent back. You'd also think at a fine dining restaurant they would clear empty glasses and crumb the table. It was pretty much a mess of an experience. I mentioned to the server the shellfish tower was missing crab and he kind of just shrugged his shoulders and agreed it was suppose to have crab. We left the restaurant after 10:30. An almost 4 hour dining experience that should have been 2 hours tops. They offered desert on them but we just wanted to leave. I was upset we still paid for the tower and they took off a round of drinks. To be honest, I gave an extra star because the food was great (other than the rubber band) things happen, it was probably from the produce. Either way, sadly as much as we enjoyed some of the food and the ambience, we definitely will not be retuning. The service was not good at all. Even the host stand needs improvement. The main woman at the host stand with black hair was extremely rude. If you're not going to sit someone almost 45 minutes after their reservation, at least notify them of what is going on. Wouldn't recommend coming here.

A perfect birthday -- love the ambiance, cocktails were perfect, and food delicious. We spent my birthday there last night. Best burger -- you can taste that it is cooked on an actual grill! My husband got delicious veggie options, including cacio pasta. Server was amazing with recommendations and how often he checked on us. Cannot wait to go back!
Nice place, great atmosphere, well-designed.
The food, however, is slightly better than mediocre -- fine, but uninventive and lacking creativity. The menu isn't exactly classic, and doesn't really achieve anything contemporary or inspiring, which would be fine if not for the price point. For example, the shrimp cocktail -- with only 4 shrimp! -- was a very standard (and small) portion for $27; the steak frites, while tasty enough, was a flank steak, not the traditional NY strip -- a cheaper cut of meat that downgraded the experience. Overall, we enjoyed the experience of the restaurant but felt that the menu itself didn't deliver to the level it should, given the cost. I would recommend a drink here, but I don't know that I would eat here again.

Another fantastic outing at 1928! This time I was joined by colleagues and were seated in the back area which has a 'library" vibe. The service was excellent as it was during my last visit. My colleagues heard a lot of hype from so it was great to hear they were equally impressed with everything 1928 had to offer. The food was delicious and there were plenty of drink options available as well. 1928 is now a regular spot for me to visit whenever I'm in Boston.
Came on a Sunday night and sat at the bar.
The bar is first come first serve so we found 2 open seats immediately. The service was nice and quick. Loved the vibe and design of the restaurant, great for date night! Did not try the food as we only stopped by for drinks, but their cocktails are definitely more classic ones. Would want to try their food!
I was lucky enough to be treated to a birthday dinner here
I was lucky enough to be treated to a birthday dinner here by my sister. She was a bit iffy at first from some previous reviews she read, but we decided to give it a shot anyway. The ambience was so cool, retro and hip. There was great Saturday night energy, but it wasn't overwhelming and noisy, we could still carry on a conversation. We didn't order huge quantities of food, but the food that we had was outstanding, fresh oysters, served perfectly and then scallops with shiitake mushrooms and risotto. A great cocktail selection was made with obviously fresh ingredients nothing pre-mixed or chemical tasting. Our server Sebastian could not have been more attentive, friendly, or knowledgeable. I would definitely come here again.
Must try this restaurant
Gem of a restaurant on a cobblestone street off Charles Street. Highly recommend a stop at the bar for an expertly made cocktail. I would go back for that alone! Lightning and ambience make the restaurant even more appealing. Food is excellent. They have a lovely private dining room for 35-40 people. Never disaqppoints.
Great service and fantastic food
First time in Boston for my parents and my kids. After walking around for a few hours and ending up around the park, we realized we should probably stop somewhere for a quick bite to eat. My husband found 1928 Beacon Hill on maps and we decided to try there. For a Tuesday, they were very busy. We didn’t have a reservation but instead of saying they couldn’t serve the 6 of us, they moved stuff around just to accommodate us. We weren’t overly hungry so we ordered a few apps. The lobster bisque had to be the best bisque I’ve ever had. I’m still thinking about that bisque today. The lobster tempura was so good. And the chowder and crab cakes were good as well. Overall, 110% recommend this restaurant. While we only had apps, I will absolutely come back here next time I am in Boston just to see what else they offer and would recommend this restaurant to everyone.
Great vibe and ambiance here The service was top
Great vibe and ambiance here The service was top notch! Oysters with caviar appetizer - 5/5 Creme brulee in a freaking pineapple -5/5 Salmon - 4.5/5 $90 steak special - 3/5 i don't think the flavor and texture was there for the price
Great atmosphere, friendly service, average food..
Great atmosphere and decor. Really enjoyed the cocktails. The service was friendly. The let down for us was the food. For the price point the food was tasty but not special.
Excellent and reasonably priced food and delicious
Excellent and reasonably priced food and delicious cocktails in an upscale, beautiful restaurant. Service was exceptional as well. Will be returning!
This place is certainly a hidden gem to anyone who doesn't
This place is certainly a hidden gem to anyone who doesn't know about it. The place itself is beautiful, and the food is delicious. The restaurant looks small but has many extended rooms . This review is getting four stars due to the extremely slow and unattentive service. The server clearly had too large of a section to be able to complete the steps of service. She was beyond friendly but did not meet the expectations of what a formal and somewhat expensive restaurant would typically hold. Otherwise, the dinner was great and drinks even better! Definitely recommend this place to anyone, as I'm sure this could've simply been an understaffed night.
Great find!
What a great find on beautiful Beacon Hill. I had walked by this charming restaurant many times & decided to make a reservation for Saturday Brunch. It met my expectations and then some. Great decor & lively yet personal. The food was amazing & our waiter was so professional and friendly. Definitely going back for week night dinner.
Great Hockey Night Dinner
Looking for a good meal prior to a Bruins game, we were referred to 1928. We had great steaks - better than in many so-called steak houses. My filet (rare) was tender and full-flavored. My wife's steak frittes were also very good. Two small negative details: no baked potato to go with that great steak, and no vinegar for my wife's fries. Our waiter, Anthony, gave us a great wine recommendation -a beautiful super Tuscan. The atmosphere at this off-the-beaten-path place is vintage chic. It could be a cozy date night spot - were it not for the fact that it is crowded and a little on the noisy side. We thought that the value for this meal and service was very fair.

Awesome vibe, staff and food! If near MEEI, do yourself a favor and use this spot for dinner meeting or just a meal for yourself! Will not be disappointed and only a 5 min walk from The Liberty Hotel! Will definitely be back, and bring guests too

The restaurant is very pricey for dinner with minimal selections.... However, my family thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. I had the Braised Beef ordered to a medium rare. Not perfectly prepared to medium rare but was good. Our waitress was excellent. Will return for special occasions only.
We came in as walk-ins and ate dinner at the bar.
The drinks were excellent and the ambience was great. However, I'm giving 3 stars because the food was just ok- the halibut I ordered was over cooked and very dry. A little disappointing for the price. We would definitely come back for the excellent cocktails, and maybe try some apps instead of committing to a meal.

Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.

When it says working on bid, it means there are people looking to fill it.
