Midsummer House Cambridge Reviews
An excellent wedding anniversary lunch
My wife and I had wanted to dine at Midsummer House for many years and our recent 40th wedding anniversary was the ideal occasion to book a table. We went with our two daughters and their husbands on a Saturday and chose the Corpus menu. A card congratulating our anniversary, plus personalised menus were nice touches. The service from being greeted at the door, and during the meal was top class and personable, not at all stuffy. The food, as expected, was excellent with no lapses in quality from course to course, and the length of time between courses was spot on. The additional dessert courses at the end of the meal were a welcome and delicious extra. The downside was a very expensive wine menu, with very little under £100 and virtually nothing under £50, perhaps we were being a little naive. We settled on two bottles of red and a bottle of white, for £300, and slight adjustments in our orders were not accompanied by an attempt to upsell by the sommelier which was appreciated. Would we still recommend Midsummer, yes, we would as it’s a great gastronomic experience. Just make sure there’s plenty of slack in the credit card limit.
Our anniversary lunch at Midsummer House in Cambridge was an absolute treat from start to finish. Welcomed with champagne and perfect, meaty olives in the courtyard – a special touch. The food journey was exceptional: the savoury-sweet apple sable, a delicate sardine terrine, and a superb duck liver flapjack (creamy duck, raspberry sweetness, chocolate, crunch!) were early highlights. The Bloody Mary, served like a gazpacho with a cucumber sorbet surprise, was incredibly refreshing. The cuttlefish with hazelnut and ginger jelly on cauliflower bavarois was light and fresh. The smoked butternut squash sorbet with rich pork consommé offered fantastic temperature and flavour contrasts – truly a masterclass. The duck main was a delightful blend of rich and gamey, perfectly balanced by melon puree and smokey vinegar. Even a slight doughiness in the bao buns couldn't overshadow the brilliant brik pastry duck wing portion. The Jack Daniels cafe pousse was an "OMG WOW!" moment – still unsure what was in it, but incredible! Dessert was a fantastic coconut and lime creation in a chocolate bowl, with lovely sour-sweet contrasts and a hint of chilli. Finishing with coffee and exquisite petit fours (apple pie-like beignettes and an astonishing apple tart tatin) in the courtyard was pure bliss. A huge highlight was Head Chef Liam's kitchen tour, detailing each section and relating it to our menu. Service throughout was spot on, attentive, polite, and interactive. Every dish was a thoughtful experience. Truly brilliant!
Creative, complex, visually beautiful and delicious
Creative, complex, visually beautiful and delicious top end tasting menu in a lovely setting. Possibly too much food - but wouldn't have wanted to miss anything! Excellent friendly service, delightful wine waiter. Restaurant in a glass summer house whilst "on the river"' the river itself is hidden, (Not a problem - it's not that attractive. Lovely walled garden. I have eaten in a lot of Michelin Starred restos - Daniel Clifford is clearly a very very skilled chef - the complexity and taste combinations he achieves are amazing.
Hidsummer Mouse. The Best-kept Secret in Cambridge
From the outside, Midsummer House appears to be a pleasant riverside Cambridge residence with no hint of it concealing the best restaurant that I have ever dined in underneath. The tasting menu provided a cornucopia of delicate dishes, each with its own distinctive taste and presented on the plate with panache. Our waiter, Liam, was charming and intelligent with a great sense of humour that added to the overall dining experience. I believe that the head chef's name was also Liam. He and his team in the kitchen must be highly commended for the supreme standard of the cuisine that they provided. Service was ten out of 10 and food was also a ten. I cannot recommend this culinary experience at Midsummer House highly enough. Perfect.
Unforgettable birthday meal
We came for my birthday as a treat and had the taster menu. It was hands down the best food we have ever had. The wine pairings were spot on. The staff were professional and knowledgeable without being overly formal and the atmosphere was relaxed and enjoyable. Can’t wait to go again.
Birthday Lunch
I've been coming to Midsummer House since 2002 and it is always a memorable dining experience. On this occasion, we joined foodie friends for a birthday celebration and from arrival to departure, the service was impeccable and the food exceptional. Creative and inventive dishes, knowledgable and personable staff with each course expertly delivered and beautifully presented. Elegant setting with a relaxed atmosphere. Put simply, Midsummer House is a wonderful restaurant.
Don’t miss out on this place! (Chad was great)
Me and my partner came here to watch the football, food was fantastic, drinks were great and the somehow the service was even better - Chad was attentive, friendly and super helpful overall.
Definitely would give 5 stars if I could.
What a fabulous little gem this place is! From the moment we arrived we were greeted with smiles and fabulous staff who completely made our evening. We were spotted trying to take a photo outside and a young lady at the door sprung into action to help. It was my birthday and at the table was a birthday card from the restaurant staff. The whole evening the staff were very professional and made us feel totally comfortable and went the extra mile in all they did. The food was totally delicious, not one dish I couldn't totally admire for its beauty, flavour and texture. After dinner we were invited to meet the chef and the owner, we had photos together and were encouraged to give the chef some feedback. I had the best time and would love to come back. Thank you to you all.
Good food, not so good wine
This is a Michelin starred restaurant and in our case a lunch for two cost over £500 including wine so you have to look at the overall experience in that context. The good points: it was a lovely setting next to the river in Cambridge; the decor inside was lovely; the service was excellent- knowledgeable without being overbearing. The food was very good as one would expect - interesting and tasty - but nothing was really standout that I will remember, unlike the Fat Duck which I went to many years ago. The worst part was the wine. We went for the wine flight which went with it which turned out to be only three glasses for £58 each! And the first of these did not arrive until course number four so we actually ordered another glass each at £20 a time. This is not very much to start with but then the amount of wine in a glass was minuscule which meant that you spent the whole meal trying to conserve what you had. And to be honest the wine itself was nothing special If you go I would advise buying a couple of bottles rather than the wine flight. Overall an enjoyable experience marred by the stinginess with the wine
Excellent lunch
Had the tasting lunch menu today Nice setting Excellent service - attentive and friendly and happy to chat Food was exceptional Complex and interesting - immaculately presented Only course I wasn’t totally in love with was the frog legs (still ate it mind!). I’m not a fan of frog legs in general (and this is from someone who lives part of the year in the alps) I liked them more than the French variant as they were well roasted with a crispy skin Stand outs were the Cornish cuttlefish and coconut parfait dessert I also loved the additional cheese course (tete de moines) Like I say, it was all great Had the prestige wine pairing which was great My wife was driving - she had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc (nice but pricey given the size of the pour) she didn’t really like the non—alcoholic pairings. The kitchen have clearly worked hard to craft them but she would have preferred a Diet Coke I reckon Look forward to returning
A Midsummer Day’s Dream
This was my second time dining at Midsummer House. I had decided to spoil my partner with her first visit to celebrate a Birthday. It was a delightful visit and we were made to feel very special. From the start, after you walk through the front door, there is an atmosphere you don’t feel in my places. Everyone is treated as an individual, yet the most important guest in the restaurant. It’s a real skill to spread that sort of attention. The food service is polite and done with such care which is hard to fault. Unfortunately, on this occasion, during the lunch service we were missed off the Sablé entrées. The waiter quickly resolved this a couple of starter courses in, without any fuss. The sommelier has such a warm character. He’s a real credit, as are the other staff, to the astounding chefs. Both female front of house on the day were also very discreet and welcoming. They made us feel at home. The food doesn’t need any commentary from me as it’s absolutely outstanding, recognised by Michelin and critics galore. It’s truly worth the experience. Thanks to everyone at Midsummer for making my partner’s birthday very special.
Awful experience
I had an awful experience with Midsummer House. My family went for lunch to celebrate my dad and husband’s birthdays. Following the meal, I emailed Midsummer House with some serious concerns. I was very disappointed with their poor customer service that followed. I emailed them to share my concerns before leaving a review and I was absolutely shocked at their response. They said that my intention to leave a review was by itself a "threat" and made it clear they would start legal action if I made any "slanderous statements", and that they will try to remove my review. I asked for nothing in my email, and felt their response could have been more sympathetic and less attacking. An overall very disappointing experience and I will never return.
Such a treat
My husband took me to celebrate my 50th birthday as it had been on my wish list for a while. The warm welcome as the front door opened was the start of 3 lovely hours of being looked after! The tasting menu just got better course after course - standouts for us were the rabbit, asparagus, butternut squash and chocolate parfait. I had the wines to match and hubby had the non - alcoholic pairings which were also delicious. We opted for the cheese course which was a nice surprise in how it was presented. The service was wonderful, calm and attentive, just the right amount of conversation. As we left we were handed a bag with the menus and two apple muffins to have when we got home with a cup of tea! These were delicious as anticipated and a lovely touch.
Spectacular from start to finish
What an amazing experience at Midsummer House. The staff were all brilliant, really knowledgeable and attentive. All the extra little touches made it super special. And the food and wine pairing was just divine. Every course was absolutely delicious and just right to feel full but not absolutely stuffed.
Beale's Plaice
This was our third visit and the food, drink and staff, particularly Katie, were excellent as ever. I recommend the luxurious wine pairing, which was a real treat. It's a shame that the owner was too self- important to come out of the kitchen himself to apologise for his table booking error. Sending out Adam Woodyatt (the actor who plays Ian Beale in Eastenders) instead, whilst comedic, was a bit embarrassing for all concerned and somewhat patronizing.
A fantastic and surprisingly good value experience - would definitely recommend
Just fantastic! everything so well prepared and presented - the confit of rabbit with prunes and duck liver was the most amazing thing I have ever tasted and most of the other dishes weren't far behind. One of the few restaurants of it's kind where I think everything was so good it was actually worth the money Very nice and quite knowledgable staff Maybe a little light and initially quiet in the restaurant, my only (slight) criticism My wife had the non alcoholic pairings, which were varied and all outstanding, and a great way to include people who don't drink in the whole expereince. It was a 21st birthday celebration and there was a card waiting and a goody bag with cake to take away - thanks! Great touch. Would definitely come again some day and recommend to others
A memorable lunch
Champagne on arrival followed by the Lunchtime Taster Menu; two hours and forty-five minutes of blissful indulgence. Every one of the 13 elements was exquisite in presentation and taste and the service was quietly efficient with an explanation of each ingredient (what, where from and how prepared). To accompany the meal were 3 glasses of selected excellent wines, again with a full description.
Amazing !
No wonder its rated as the best resturant in Cambridge and probably further afield Its not cheap but such high qualty food Amazing friendly staff A great setting by the Cam on the edge of Midsummer Green The staff and Chefs need to be awarded five stars ! Highly Recommended !
An outstanding experience
The best experience ever, we were lucky to have been given vouchers as presents for such a wonderful experience. From the moment we arrived the service was exceptional, the front of house staff were very attentive and knowledgeable. The tasting menu was superb, the presentation and flavours were fantastic, great wine menu, we chose a lovely English wine from Stopham Vineyard from our home county of Sussex The highlight of our trip was the opportunity to meet Daniel and his team with a visit to the kitchen, where we were introduced to the whole team and each station was explained to us. Every course was faultless, presentation wise, every plate added to the visual appeal for that course, the flavours were exceptional and such intriguing combinations. Midsummer house is a must for anyone who loves food, it was lovely to get some recommendations for other restaurants from Daniel and his wife to add to our next choices but I truly believe Midsummer will be the top of our list for a very long time to come. If we ever find ourselves in death row our last meal request will be the taster menu at midsummer house !!! Thanks for a great experience and apologies our review was later than it should have been. We look forward the a return visit some day
Nice..but very expensive
There was 6 of us..for a 3 couse meal in the evening The meals were very well presented but very small It was like dining at home as bits just a converted house by the river. Its great for a special occasion if you are not paying yourself..lol. The bill was over £600...gosh !
Sumptuous
Sumptuous food, really nice staff, and they gave us some souvenirs! Perfect venue for an extravagant couple’s treat. Highly recommended
Exceptional but don't miss out!
One can forget how exceptional Midsummer House is if leaving too long between visits! The food is sublime: delicate flavour mixes and clever texture and temperature variations, all superbly presented. It is not let down by the level of service: attentive, knowledgeable and friendly to exactly the right degree. However, don't miss out on the optional extras! The cheese course we had was superb and, after all, it's not somewhere you are going to visit every day!
Every mouthful was joyous...
A first visit for me on a miserable rainy day in March. But what a delightful experience it turned out to be. perfect, friendly service and a meal to really remember. I enjoyed everything that was put in front of me. Beautifully presented and an incredible assault on the taste buds. Everything was simply amazing.
Did not disappoint, amazing experience!
Finally managed to get a Saturday night table booked for my birthday. I have wanted to dine at this prestigious restaurant for a long time and hoped it would be as amazing as I had built it up to be, I was not disappointed! We were shown upstairs to the lounge for a pre dinner drink before being taken to our table and presented with the first delicious mouthful of the evening. What followed was a food experience like no other, 17 courses of exciting, delicious, mind bending plates of food! They just kept coming much to our delight. We had slight anxiety before dinner that it would be stuffy or pretentious and out of our comfort but we needn’t have worried. The staff, all of them from the waiters to the sommelier were absolutely delightful. Extremely knowledgable of what we were eating and are clearly involved with the menu process, they honestly made our night fabulous. My husband’s food allergies were catered for without question and his experience was not minimalized because of it. We were even treated to a quick visit to the kitchen to meet Mark and his team who were lovely. 4 1/2 hours of food pleasure and will be returning as soon as we have recovered. Thanks to the whole team at Midsummer House, can’t wait to see you all again.
WOW!
What a wonderful Friday Lunch we all had. Smiled from start to finish & enjoyed the Carrot Cake on the journey home. I am not keen on trip advisor but felt that others probably are & would like to just say that this is a really really lovely place. The food is simply incredible (do go for the “extra” cheese course) & ALL the staff were superstars - especially Tristan 😊. We will be back vvv soon & cannot recommend Midsummer House highly enough. Well Done!
AN UNFORGETABLE AMAZING EXPERIENCE
It was my husbands birthday and we love the experience of Michelin Star Restaurants. We have visited many in this country and abroad and this is up there as one of the best. For us the whole experience from a welcome arrival, beautifully presented and delicious food and attention to detail service is important as you are not going for a meal, you are going for a three hour gastronomic experience. Midsummer House delivers this in spades. The food is out of this world - an explosion in the mouth, the presentation is outstanding and looks almost too good to eat. I eat with my eyes first and what we love about this type of dining is that the food is presented totally different to what you would expect. For example the Cheese on Toast looks nothing like you would expect but as you bit into it you can taste all the flavours you would expect but at an intense level. The best Michelin Star restaurants should evoke good memories and experiences from your life and the dish that did this for me was the Chicken Wing with Smoked Candyfloss. As I bit into the candyfloss and it stuck to the front of my teeth the memory from my childhood of going to the Fair with my parents and eating a bag of candyfloss sprung to mind - something I had not thought about for many years. Great memory which brought my parents to mind and a smile to my face. The wine paring is excellent and the Sommelier's are so knowledgable and attentive, my husband had the non-alcoholic paring which I have never seen before and every glass was designed by Chef Patron Daniel Clifford and the Head Chef Mark Abbott to work well with the food - they were delicious and unique to this restaurant. Last but not least a bit shout out to the staff who were amazing, very professional, friendly and attentive, They were happy to spend time with us. We were very fortunate to be given a guided tour of the kitchen and met Mark Abbott and his team which was an excellent finish to an amazing experience. Will definitely go back - Highly recommended
Stunning food and a special celebration
Faultless food and service. Lovely location. Pricy but a super experience. Definitely a place to celebrate something special!
First Class
What an experience! From start to finish this was exceptional! Really couldn't fault it! Bravo to all the staff
Two Michelin stars?
We had lunch. A trio of canapes were pleasant but unremarkable. The first course proper - crispy hoisin duck, onion, cucumber and salad burnet was unbalanced - dominated by the flavours of sesame, onion and hoisin sauce. A dish of contrasting treatments of line caught Cornish mackerel was prettily presented but under-seasoned to the point of being tasteless. A breast of Anjou pigeon was accurately cooked, but overpowered by it's accompanying mushroom and chocolate puree. An excellent dessert , good petit fours and the concluding warm beignets served with apple puree and a creme anglaise were saving graces. Overriding impression - is that it? Even with an inclusive glass of Krug our lunch provided very few bangs for quite a lot of bucks. Our disappointment was probably heightened by a spectacular meal the previous day at a one star restaurant, similarly priced, which was clearly of two star quality. On this showing, Midsummer House is not deserving of that rating.
Food at its very best
Everything about the lunch was just amazing. The different flavours of the food blended beautifully on the palate, the presentation was just stunning, the staff were incredibly knowledgeable, they welcomed questions about the combinations of flavours that each course introduced. The wine recommended just enhanced those flavours. The whole experience was wonderful, and although expensive, what price can be attributed to the quality of service, the skill, the knowledge and the attention to detail of all staff at Midsummer House? Congratulations to all involved in providing such a high standard of fine dining in Cambridge.
AVOID - please read Previously visited Midsummer House for
AVOID - please read Previously visited Midsummer House for the 'lunch menu' for birthday celebration pre covid, so in July when couldn't seem to book online phoned to make the reservation for the lunch menu for another very special birthday celebration in September. Paid deposit and received confirmation email containing booking but no detail. Arrived with our special guest and started the lunch. Requested a menu as a keepsake during the lunch and it didn't register there were more items than previous visits pre pandemic. The food and service could not be criticized as it is special. The bill total was astronomical and was paid, we had had the tasting menu. In shock I spoke to the assistant manager before departing, he informed me that lunch menus on Saturday's ceased a few months previously. We departed the restaurant and considered the situation we had found ourselves in, concluded we had simply been misled or a casualty of circumstances changing. Phoned to challenge and discuss the matter on the next opportunity they were open for business and sent a detailed email regarding the problem. Chased a response over a week later and were told a voucher was in the post. No voucher arrived after nearly 2 weeks, so chased again. Then received the rudest most unprofessional email from CROWN MANAGEMENT the owners of Midsummer House. Basically, saying the staff had told us it was a tasting menu on booking, and we ate it, so we pay for it, and said nobody had offered us a voucher and to basically go away and they would not discuss the matter further. Replied challenging their false statements with explanations and got no response. The way the matter was ignored, and then the content of the eventual response is not what you would expect from a small-town café let alone a Michelin starred restaurant. The tasting menu is too large and is not worth the exuberant price tag BE CAREFUL as they hardly offer anything else now and this is probably why they seem to always have availability on Instagram.
