The View at Chaminade Santa Cruz Reviews
Chef's kiss
Gorgeous view of the ocean from the forest. Great service and excellent food. Definitely coming back. Thank you to our amazing server Kelsey.
My fiancé and I attend this restaurant / bar often.
We, of course, love the view. But we also really appreciate the menu. And the drink selection. They have the best smokey old-fashioned drink ever! But beyond the menu, drinks, and view, the staff is exceptional! Everyone we get are knowledgeable, exceedingly friendly, and helpful. We would like to give a special acknkwkegrm to our latest server, Ira! This young man was outstanding in every way! He went above and beyond to see that we had the best experience possible. Thank you Ira!!!

Food - 4 stars We had ahi-poke + tacos for appetizers and cold salmon salad + wild salmon for mains. Food was fresh, plated very nicely, and well balanced. The only issue is the cold salmon salad was supposed to made with butter lettuce (per the menu) but was made with romaine/iceberg. (not great), which we were not told until we took a few bites and asked. (-one star) Ambiance - decor - 4 stars It has a nice view as the name of the restaurant suggests. The place was clean and has a nice upscale country vibe. The only issue was someone coming around and asking for tips for the musicians playing some chill blues songs. Kind of tacky. Service - 2 stars I understand going for a chill and relaxed (ie slow) pace, which I can deal with (even though it wasn't busy at all) but when you can't refill my water and I have to drink my friend's water - and you still can't refill it - or clear our appetizers plates for 30min - Or when your customer asks where is the butter lettuce when we specifically mentioned we are ordering the dish because of the butter lettuce only to be told when they brought the check that they ran out - makes this place seem just like an overpriced restaurant because of the "view." These "little" things make the place seem less like a high end restaurant and more like an everyday restaurant that has a nice view and good food. In spite of my take on the service, the food was very good and with nice weather, a nice view in a clean relaxing environment the View was a decent experience given the price and expectations.
The service and ambiance at The View are great, but the
The service and ambiance at The View are great, but the menu suffers. My simple salad with crisp greens topped with grilled salmon was the best of the four entrees our group ordered. The vegan pancakes my friend ordered were unpleasant. They looked nice, with assorted shredded vegetables, but the seasoning was lacking and/or the griddle had nasty (rancid? fishy?) oil on it. Each of us had a taste, and each said some version of "Eww." The waitress returned the dish to the kitchen and comped a green salad. On previous visits I'd decided the kitchen is figuring out shortcuts that allow a plate to have all of the elements you traditionally expect of a dish, but the elements are cooked separately and assembled in a "just in time" fashion. Another friend ordered corned beef hash as a special treat, and it turned out to be cottage fries tossed with cubes of corned beef. There was nothing hashed about this and it was not very good. Chilaquiles I had on a prior trip were tortilla chips, scrambled eggs, and toppings. There was no melding of sautéed corn tortilla with the eggs. I might return for coffee and a pastry, just so I can enjoy the view, but, honestly, the coffee wasn't very good either. 2 stars for the gingery salmon salad.
Two Issues: Deafening noise and a soon to be illegal charge.
1) I'll admit my expectations for this restaurant were high. I thought it would be perfect for a friend's birthday lunch, far more special than our usual coffee or noon time haunts where you approach the counter and order for yourself! I wanted the quintessential meal outdoors with a view and cloth napkins! Shortly after we'd settled in and had received our beverages, a chainsaw started up. Just below us, a huge tree was being cut up into large rounds. When it seemed that it might go on through our entire meal we asked the server to ask about stopping it until lunch was over. He said he spoke to his manager and they tried but failed to reach anyone to stop. The idyllic lunch ruined. A table near us left. I wish we had. We confirmed that the tree was on Chaminade property and wondered still about the wisdom of scheduling this task during meal service. Certainly they don't do tree work everyday, but the fact that no one cared about the experience they were providing diners was a good reason to never return. It would have been far better to close the restaurant or at least close the patio dining until the work was complete. An apology, "I tried" from the server didn't make it better at all. Same response from the manager on duty. 2) Okay, it won't be illegal for 10 days...but there was a BS 4% "Living Wage Charge" on our bill. This hidden fee ("junk fee") will have to be disclosed up front beginning July 1, 2024. The server says they put off adding the fee and were one of the last restaurants to impose it. I can't say I've seen it at any of the places we've eaten recently
This review is just for the Fathers day brunch buffet.
I hope this restaurant runs smoother on regular days but yesterdays brunch was a mess. My dad wanted to come here for Fathers day as we haven't been back in a while. We also had Mothers day brunch here years prior and we had a good experience so we were excited to come visit again. We were seated pretty quickly, the room was basically a conference room divided into two portions which was not what I was expecting. The conference room is pretty bare bones, nothing fancy about it at all. The buffet side was constantly out of plates so people were just waiting around for plates to come out and when they did, the plates disappeared so quickly that a little crowd was always waiting. The food was forgettable. Chicken and salmon were absolutely overcooked, the butternut squash ravioli was on the sweeter side, and some of the oysters looked questionable. The person carving the prime rib gave me a paper thin slice but my husband received a decent slice. The desserts looked like they came from Safeway. The omelette station was the only thing I truly enjoyed yesterday and the guy at this station was so nice and patient even though he was super busy. The staff tried their hardest which was much appreciated but it seems like this brunch wasn't planned out well at all which just screamed poor management. They seemed understaffed and and overwhelmed. I don't think I'll do a brunch buffet here again. You truly get what you pay for, low price for low quality. I don't mind the junk fees, service charge 18% and living fee 4% as the staff truly deserved it yesterday but management needs to be better.
We came for brunch buffet on Father's day.
It has been a 6ish years since we have been to brunch buffet here. They have moved the rooms used for it to a smaller area with less of a view. The staff was kind and trying their best but they were clearly over extended. The buffet was constantly out of things. At many points there were people just waiting for plates to even start eating. The staff was stocking as fast as they could but they were clearly not set up for success by management. Food was good when it was stocked, drinks were great, but again understaffed so slow. On a holiday when most people are making reservations management should either staff accordingly or limit reservations so that staff is set up for success. Overall, a bit of a bummer experience because we were constantly waiting for things or listening to staff try hard to give a great experience to frustrated patrons. I hope these things are fixed because prior to 2020 this was our favorite brunch place.
Went to the View today for lunch.
We sat outside on the upper deck.We had fish & chips which was great. We got there just in time to get our drink and food order in. Sadly once we were served the service was nowhere to be seen. It was worst for those who came in after us - they couldn't even get served - had to go to the bar themselves for drinks and were finally served their food as we were leaving. If you do not have enough serverers to serve, you should not continue seating!
Impeccable Service!
At Chaminade Resort's The View restaurant, Andrew E. Delivered impeccable service contributing to our wonderful dining experience. The restaurant's atmosphere was inviting, and the cuisine was exquisite. Andrew's attentive care further elevated our meal. I highly recommend dining at The View and enjoying Andrew's exceptional service.

We visited this restaurant for a Mother's Day dinner, and it was a disappointing experience. The location is difficult to find both on maps and within the resort. Despite the beautiful views, the overall experience was forgettable. The staff were just okay, and the food arrived suspiciously fast, suggesting it had been sitting in a warmer. The server mixed up our orders, confusing the lamb with the ribeye. Both dishes were mediocre at best. The drinks were basic and overpriced at $17 each. The flourless lava cake was extremely bitter and decorated with a flower that looked absurd. We won't be returning to this restaurant, though we might consider staying at the resort in the future.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME! Mother's Day brunch was a total disaster. The service was extremely horrible. You will wait over 45 minutes past your reservation time to be seated. The server will only check on you once. If you ask for anything expect it to be delivered 15+ minutes later or not even show up. The host will seat you at any seat just to keep people moving along. They couldn't care less where you sit or the experience. It's not worth $85 per person. The buffet will be low on food and all the food will be cold. The buffet stations will be dirty with food all over the tables They will run out of food. So what's the point of paying $85 if I'm not getting what I want on the menu? You will have people running around interrupting your experience. Nothing from the restaurant or staff was done to make a Mother's Day experience memorable. Even better, expect to wait over an hour for the valet to find and deliver your car. Long lines to receive your car and that's if they can find it. Only thing positive was the view outside. Everything else felt like a low level diner. I would ask for a full refund from this catastrophe experience
Yum... they have flourless chocolate cake! My favorite.

Bad food!!!
The Chaminade is located atop a hill with gorgeous views and that is the reason we go there fairly often. They did have a good 'chef' many moons ago. Now they have a 'cook' who churned out 'steak, 2 eggs and potatoes' that were so greasy that we had to abandon the meal. We tried to order a simple meal as their food has deteriorated recently, but this was beyond bad. It is difficult to ruin 'eggs, over easy' but they did.
Breakfast at the Chaminade.
Andrew took great care of us during breakfast. He was very polite and professional. The food was tasty and the view was spectacular, even though it was raining on the day we were there. We would definitely come back, hopefully on a day with more sunshine so we can watch the sunset.
Dog-friendly brunch spot with great views
The View gets top marks for its location and atmosphere as it offers breathtaking views, perfect for a lazy Sunday brunch with your furry friend. Andrew E. was our server and provided excellent service. The food itself left a bit to be desired. Thankfully, the drinks saved the day. Their mimosa selection was good, with creative flavor combinations like blueberry with sage. They also boast an impressive selection of local craft beers. Overall, it is a great place to enjoy a refreshing drink, and catch up with family (both human and canine).
Fantastic dining experience!
My friend and I heard of this place through the grapevine, and decided to try it out for dinner last week. Although I came in with an open mind, the dishes I had still blew my expectations away! I ordered an entree of their Local Rockfish, perfectly seasoned calamari, and their raspberry cheesecake paired with a dessert wine. Everything was delicious, and the meal left us more than satisfied. The atmosphere of the area was warm and inviting, with live music and excellent customer service. Our server Ira was very charismatic and attentive, and patiently yet clearly answered our numerous questions regarding their menu. Overall it was a great dining experience, and I recommend going for any meal of the day, regardless of whether you’re staying at their resort or not.

My bf and I came here for lunch on my day off and the restaurant was expected considering it was at a resort. Interior, exterior, overall ambiance was relaxing. Did not feel like I was in Santa Cruz because of the overall luxurious feel. Ordered their chicken Caesar salad- chicken was great and had grilled Smokey flavor. The club sandwich was also good with the fries, drinks top notch.

It was burger week this past week in Santa Cruz and decided on this delectable burger from the View at chaminade! It was very delicious, a burger consisting of an 8oz patty, some birria stewed meat, slices of pineapple and peppers, and topped with cotija cheese! All while being able to dip every bite into a delicious beef consommé! The restaurant itself was very nice, a gorgeous view of a clear Santa Cruz winter evening! Great service and live music while we dined! Highly recommend!

Ambiance and view is what this place is all about.
The bar is amazing. Shout out to the bartender who makes good old fashions. The breakfast food and service was terrible... the hotel was so rundown too but that's for another yelp review. So we were in Santa Cruz for our brother's warriors game and stayed at the hotel. We had many meals at The View while staying there. My family had a dinner at the view for my grandfathers memorial in the spring. We had high expectations after that amazing experience. We learned our lesson: go for the dinner and leave it at that. Wonderful view and great ambiance!
Maybe I came here while staying at the hotel.
The views are indeed amazing but the service was some of the strangest I've ever received. We asked for silverware and none was ever brought. I asked for a macchiato during breakfast and the server had no idea what that was. Upon getting our food some of it arrived incorrectly, was given to wrong people or was cold. Maybe it was an off day but I'm not sure I'll be back.
Want to start off by saying the service here was amazing!
Want to start off by saying the service here was amazing! Everyone was so friendly and kind I honestly was surprised. Not because I expected bad service but I think I was overwhelmed with how good the service was in the best way possible. The view and drinks just added to the experience. I will say the food was just okay. But i had to give it an additional star for service.
Amazing Service!
A friend and I went to hear a local artist that we love. We had dinner and drinks on the outside patio. The service was impeccable - we felt so well taken care of (Drew was very professional, well dressed, and polite with perfect manners). We observed that all of the servers were right there for the other patrons as well. No one was left waiting for service, ever! This is so rare these days where most restaurants are short-staffed. I highly recommend this place for Great Food, Beautiful atmosphere, and service that is top notch.
Spectacular view and very good food!
The views really are the draw. Food was very good and service was attentive. For a good meal at a spectacular location, this is a great choice.
My friend booked here for her bday brunch.
She truly wanted a view and it did not disappoint. The view from the patio is stunning. The food also pretty good too. I ordered the huevos rancheros and it was super delicious. The tostadas with birra, beans, avocado, sunny side egg and side of salsa to top did not disappoint. The staff was also super helpful and the service was quick. I would come back to try more of the menu.
This is a beautiful setting with a view of forested area.
You can sit inside or outside. We chose to sit outside because the view was stunning. However, the service was very slow and the server was unfamiliar with the menu options. When the food finally came, it was mediocre, especially for the price tag. The fish and chips was probably the best thing we ate. My husband ordered a virgin moscow mule and they charged us full price. Lastly, parking is a bit limited and we had a bit of a walk to get to the restaurant, which was frustrating in heels. Valet was unavailable.
Always one of my favorite places to have lunch or dinner
Always one of my favorite places to have lunch or dinner especially if you're staying at the resort. The staff was super friendly and knowledge about the menu. The food was good, nothing to fancy. The view was enjoyable especially on a beautiful sunny day.
Enjoy "The View"!
My husband and I reside in south Santa Cruz county. Great to know that we have such a stellar restaurant in our backyard! We dined at The View on a warm summer evening. Both "views" were stellar: we shared a savory salmon dish and an over-the-top-delicious dish called "Mushroom Pithivier" ( a french dish that prepares locally-foraged mushrooms in a puff-pastry pie). Forgot to mention that both ordered cocktails at the bar during our short wait for our table. Mine was a Venus Gin martini made to perfection!
Never again
We had an anniversary dinner reservation @ 6.00 pm. We were on time and were greeted and seated within 5 Minutes. Beautiful grounds, that's the good news. Without going into boring detail our food had not arrived at 7.30 despite repeatedly reminding our waiter of our presence. After an our and a half we had enough. Right when we got up to leave the manager came over and suggested rather rudely that we could take the ordered food home in a doggy bag. Thank you but no thank you. I wish I had read the numerous negative reviews before booking, in retrospect, they all sounded oh so true, unfortunately. Take your money elsewhere would be my advise.
"We're out of everything, sorry"
We had a 3:30pm reservation for six for Mother's Day. I can't rate the food because were never seated after waiting 30 minutes. The hostesses eventually admitted that since brunch was almost over, they had no clean linens, silverware, servers, and food was almost gone. I have never in my life showed up for a reservation and told "we have no food left, sorry." They were nominally apologetic for ruining our Mother's Day. Basically they shrugged at us. Abysmal. NEVER AGAIN.
Worst Operation in Santa Cruz
I challenge you to find a poorer run bar and restaurant than The View. We have been here multiple times in the past three years (glutton for punishment) and every time we come, it’s a new experience in incompetence and disappointment. From the bubble headed receptionist who’s rarely at her post to the bartenders who ignore you when you’ve been standing in front of them for ten minutes - and then don’t smoke your smokey cocktail or don’t fill a drink order for 30 minutes only to tell your waiter that they’re out of ingredients for that evening’s signature drink, to the food that is mediocre and small portioned and takes FOREVER to come out, it’s an exercise in gastronomic lunacy. Obviously the majority of chronic issues are the result of failed management that doesn’t train staff and runs a terribly inefficient kitchen - because they don’t know what they’re doing. If this place didn’t have a pretty patio overlooking a forested valley and distant sea and wasn’t attached to a hotel, they would have been out of business years ago. I highly recommend you come for a cocktail at the fire pit (plan to wait for that drink) and head down the hill for much better food, prices, and competent hospitality/service somewhere else.
Wonderful Experience. . . Full Stop!
I had a solo stay the Chaminade with the intention of not leaving the property for the entire weekend. I did two dinner and brunch at the restaurant and each experience was lovely. The food is made from fresh local ingredients and the menu quite varied. Sat at the bar both dinners, and thoroughly enjoyed the repartee between customers and staff. I rarely write reviews (despite my best intentions) but Daniel and his team deserve this one and more. Whether you are just seeking a cocktail and an app, or full dinner, The View is a delight all around.
SERVICE AT ITS FINEST
I will be back!! This restaurant checks all the boxes!! I was immediately acknowledged by bartender, ADAM when I approached the hostess stand. The hostess quickly greeted me and confirmed my party of 10 reservation. She led me to a beautifully set table lined with a variety of succulents with a great view to the ocean. I was the first to arrive from my group and was prepared to wait for others to arrive before receiving service. I was pleasantly surprised to be immediately, warmly greeted by ANDREW. He was attentive and effortlessly serviced our group despite staggered arrivals with such alertness, positive vibes and high energy! We were all impressed with the generous portions and very delicious dishes that were served. The heirloom tomato and aleppo pepper Hollandaise sauce on my Chaminade Benedict were such a yummy twist on a traditional Benedict. It is refreshing to receive such impeccable service! Thank you Andrew! You are amazing!!
