The Barbary London Reviews
The Barbary is a little gem!
The food was delicious! Such a simple space with great music and a great vibeโฆloved the no frills of it all. Paloma cocktail was best I have ever had! Alex and Ceasar were beyond nice and attentive!
North African blended fusion
Oversett tekst med kameraet Amazing food... some just melted on your tongue. North African spice blend that gave a new experience to several small dishes. We were 3 people and asked them to serve a piece off everything. It just flowed with small dishes, one better than the other... The best was perhaps a piece of fish crispy fried on side, spiced up on the other - and the neck of a black pig, flambรฉed!! Absolutely recommend. They only have approx 25 seats, which are all located around a bar stol setting, souronding the kitchen, where you can watch the chefs prepare the food. A must do next time in London.
We are regular patrons of The Palomar so we wanted to try
We are regular patrons of The Palomar so we wanted to try one of their other restaurants and Barbary didn't disappoint. Excellent food, cocktails/wine and ambiance. Love all the small plates and dips.
Gets better with each visit!! Superb
Another superb visit. It seems to get better each time that I visit. We were blown away by the food, atmosphere and energy. A huge thank you to Lubna for being so welcoming and professional- what an asset she is. Thank you for another wonderful evening
Great date night
If youโre staying in the area I would not miss this fantastic restaurant. Every bite was delicious. I particularly recommend the octopus, naan and dips. The cauliflower was also fantastic. I like that they offer carafes of wine. Itโs easier to finish on a date than an entire bottle. My wife and I went here for a date night on a short visit to London. The restaurant is very small so itโll be though with a larger group.
Absolutely spectacular cuisine ! Quaint and small which
Absolutely spectacular cuisine ! Quaint and small which makes it an experience of its own .
amazing place
The food was absolutely incredible. From the spectacular presentation and creativity to the variation of flavours and textures, every dish was delicious. I was pleasantly surprised by the portion sizes, which were just perfect. To my surprise there were also several starters, side dishes, and bread provided as extras that I didn't expect as part of the menu.
Way overpriced and left hungry
Do not go here if youโre hungry. Meat was decent but way overpriced. Youโll need to have a second dinner when you leave or spend 300 pounds to get full. Meh.
Fun atmosphere, incredible food and flavors, impeccable
Fun atmosphere, incredible food and flavors, impeccable service! North African / Mediterranean influenced food delivered to perfection! Must-try! I found Barbary on the Michelin app as a recommended Bib Gourmand, and it fits! I loved EVERYTHING! This is the perfect stop pre-theatre / before a musical or theater performance. I came between Harry Potter showings of the cursed child and could not be happier -- fun atmosphere, singing and juggling to the music, delicious food, well balanced drinks, friendly staff. I totally was satiated while I sat and ate despite no reservations. This is a small round restaurant where the chefs and bartender are in the center stage to show you their magic. Highly recommend this unbelievably fantastic restaurant. I loved the cauliflower Jaffa Style and Pata Negra (star of my meal - tender with charred crunchy edges and sweet savory garlic sauce). The Naan was excellent and fried violet artichoke were served on a bed of delicious dip.
Thrilling
A very small unusual restaurant with excellent food and staff. The tables are based around the cooking grills which adds to the ambience. Every dish was perfect
CHEFS TABLE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL!
If you like eating at the chefs table to send your taste buds in to overdrive then youโll love The Barbary as all if its horseshoe shaped seating area surrounds the kitchen. We supped our lovely house cocktails (Shifkah Palomas) whilst watching the sharing plates be delicately prepared in this intimate yet energised setting. Highlights of our meal would definitely be โThe Moroccan Cigarsโ to go first with each of the dips on the menu highly recommended. Then came the most melt in your mouth pork you are ever likely to eat in the โPata Negraโ, but do make sure you save space for desert. The hashcake on any normal day would have our favourite but it was well and truly trumped with the โPistachio Knafehโ. A sweet / savoury desert made with hard and soft mozzarella guaranteed to blow your mind. We did go to town as it was a special occasion so it was a little pricey but weโd happily go back. Next time we would easily be able to make the bill stretch a little further but it was a memorable experience indeed so whoโs counting.
Brilliant casual but upmarket lunch spot
The staff were wonderful, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was buzzing - overall, TIP TOP! Keep up the great work.
Overall wonderful service and food.
From the very moment we walked in, the service was exceptional. I actually had to check with my friend to see if she knew the hosts, they were that welcoming! The exceptional service continued with our server Orlando, who was simply the best. Made us feel thoroughly special and provided great insight to the menu. Food is exceptional and I look forward to going back to try the dishes I didnโt get too. Overall wonderful service and food.
Good but not excellent
Visited the place already no. (12:15) and was almost the first. Place is small and crowded , staff is very attentive and helpful. You seat is on a bar, not the best chair. Food was ok- not great Base on small plates Overall cost was relatively high
This was definitely our favorite restaurant during our
This was definitely our favorite restaurant during our latest London trip! Couldn't recommend enough I had a few friends rave about this place, so I was on top of making a reservation as soon as it came out. The restaurant is fairly small, pretty much with only bar seating around the kitchen, so make your reservations early. I love the open kitchen concept, where everyone can get a view of the kitchen since you're in a very large semicircle. We came with a veteran Barbary friend who knew exactly what to order. They fire grill everything to PERFECTION! Highly recommend getting the jerusalem bagel with a few mezzes to dip I don't think you can go wrong with any of the dishes, but our favorites were probably the cauliflower, chicken, and octopus. But just get everything!
Our favorite meal in London was situated in the iconic
Our favorite meal in London was situated in the iconic Neal's Yard in Covent Garden. The dishes are inspired from the Barbary Coast, identified by 16th century Europeans as the area settled by the Berbers in the Atlas Mountains. The menu focuses on the culture + heritage of countries from the Atlantic Coast through to the Mediterranean Sea leading to the Middle East. Fire is at the center of everything they do. *| what we ordered Spinach Borani Ikra Whipped Feta Naan e Barbari Beetroot Tzatziki Octopus Pata Negra Hashcake - pistachio tart
North African/Middle Eastern cuisine
Enjoyed our evening here. Food is imaginative, service is friendly and well informed. North African/Middle Eastern cuisine. All seats are at bars, you are seated on stools which are not comfortable and very little space; you are literally rubbing shoulders with your neighbours. The food is generally tasty and well prepared. Some of the sauces too strong, almost overwhelming. I would rate the food B+A- The staff who served us from behind the bar were lovely. Knowledgeable, attentive, generous (we did shots before we left). Fardin and Charlotte really looked after us. The bill came: ยฃ145.00 for two people. Not wildly expensive but not good value.
Great food, great music just right for a Sunday
It is a little hard to find but once found it should not be forgotten. The food is a mix of everything that you could wish for. The dips and the bread were very tasty and the naan bread was warm and straight out of the oven in front of you. Also don't be afraid to ask if you don't know what something is as the staff are great at helping and guiding you what goes with which other dish. Our favourite was the Pata Negra which was so soft and tasty. But don't forget the specials if they are there The other bit hat made it great on a cold Sunday was the music which was just perfect for a Sunday lunch in a relaxing environment, especially as we were a walk in.
Love it
This was one of the best food that we eat in London. We try almost everything from the menu and enjoy it. Great concept and great service ๐
After attending Michelin recommended restaurants in London for six days I came to the conclusion that this is the worstโฆ
I came to this restaurant because I went to the Palomar that is its sister restaurant. While the food is god the environment is of a fast food bar โฆ. The staff are unpolite and rush you all the time , the sits are uncomfortable ( still not a chair and there is no table), the chef is shouting all the time โฆ. The place is crowdedโฆ. I will never be backโฆ. It really does not match its sister restaurant Palomar. I do not recommend this place to anyone.
Best meal in 4 years
Well what can I say, I already had good vibes about this place and reviews from friends who had been. So I had high hopes. But Barbary I know this sounds dramatic! But your food makes my soul sing! Flavour flavour off the charts. My partner and I loved it, our waitress, shout out to Mae-zing she was our server, she was fabulous talked us through the menu, I also like to ask staff what they love on the menu as they are living and breathing it , they know whatโs good, Mae -zing guided us told us what she liked and it just added to the whole experience. None of the dishes disappointed. Legend you smashed it! The set up of all people around one horse show around the kitchen, great idea you feel connected to the kitchen and staff and just adds to the whole dinning experience, I love to cook myself to seeing in to what they are doing really added it for me. Anyway Iโm rambling all I will say is go, you wonโt be disappointed fab food, fab atmosphere and amazing staff shout too our main girl Mae-zing and the Yorkshire bloke who picked me the best desert of my life. See you in feb for my birthday x
5 stars
Tasty food, fun vibe, excellent service (our waiter Alex was great). Perfect for a romantic birthday celebration. Definitely recommend!
Brilliant food and service.
Absolutely fantastic food, cannot fault anything on the menu. Will definitely be going back next time we are in London.
Amazing Mediterranean find in London! Tiny little spot with
Amazing Mediterranean find in London! Tiny little spot with only bar tables, but wow!!!! Great, fun staff and we were lucky to get a spot without a booking due to a no-show. Definitely make a booking. Best house made lebne (which we watched them making), and hummus and the naan and their "bagel" were ridiculous. Also enjoyed the halloumi and the fattoush salad. We barely had room for the lamb which was moist and full of flavor. The open kitchen is fun and interactive. Must try for sure!!!!

The Barbary is in located Covent Garden and the food is absolutely delicious. It serves flavorful and fresh tapas right in front of your eyes with the open kitchen concept. The vibe is casual. There is limited seating so make a reservation! The menu is divided into land, sea, earth, and heaven (dessert). I tried the prawns, mushroom, naan (two servings), pork, and 3 dips. Almost every dish (I kid you not) gave me a wow factor. My only gripe is the pork was a tad too salty at times. (I didn't choose this dish). I would totally recommend this restaurant to anyone. It served us well the first night. Loved watching my food being made. Excellent experience.
Ok, I have this habit of closing my eyes when I want to
Ok, I have this habit of closing my eyes when I want to focus all my attention to a taste that that is spectacular to my taste buds. The pork dish is such a dish that all my senses focused on the taste. Wow! Such a cool place to have a seat around the kitchen bar and see how all the food is made. The cooking is really basic like cooking around a group of friends. The servers are terrific too. We just traveled through Egypt, Portugal, Jordan, Kenya and Tanzania and they seem to capture the food tastes of all these regions.Amazing. Run don't walk to this amazing restaurant.
Had a Unique and intimate dining experience at the Barbary.
It's a limited seating, Tapas kind small plates restaurant. Recommend making a reservation before hand. Great services from the staff. Food was delicious.
Great food, great service.
Interesting food and presented beautifully!Cramped and very loud-not intended for a romantic dinner. We would recommend.
Don't miss going here .
Best dinner I had in London's Covent Gardens district . If you know of Ottolenghi it's like going to his personal restaurant . The food the drinks and service are outrageously fantastic . We are at the Barbary counter service and the show of the kitchen dance was a major plus. Don't miss going here .
Great dinner spot in a cool area.
Loved the whole bar setup and vibe here - everything we tried was great. The highlight was the spice chicken, which was super moist and tender. Would definitely make a return visit when I'm in London again.
Just got back from eating here and it was amazing! We
Just got back from eating here and it was amazing! We stopped by to see if they had any walk in availability, expecting to not get in but, luck have it, a reservation didn't show up and we were seated almost immediately. The staff walked us through the whole menu and identified their favorites and we went with most of the recommendations. We started with the Jerusalem bagel with the aubergine dip. The bread was so soft and chewy with an amazing crust of sesame and zatar, it paired perfectly with the spreadable eggplant that was spiced so well. Our mains were the lamb kebab, oyster mushrooms, and cauliflower. The lamb was tender and grilled just right with the simplest salt and sauce that really let the protein shine through. The mushrooms had a very understated flavor but had the right texture and became so good with the mixture of char, lemon juice and tahini that it sat in. The star though was the cauliflower. The seasoning and sauce were so well balanced and the lightly fried texture could not have been better. We finished with the pecan baklava. I prefer pecans to pistachio and this was delicious with a nice crunch from the philo. It could have been warmed up just slightly but still tasty. I can't finish the review without talking about the staff. Everyone was so nice and accommodating. I didn't get anyone's name but the staff working the night of July 30th showed how a restaurant should be run. Def a must try when you're in Soho!
Excellent
I took my teenage son here for dinner while we were in town for his birthday. We had 10 different items, including the pata negra, arissa squid, cauliflower, a few dips with naan and the Jerusalem bagel, and a couple desserts. Usually small plates style restaurants have some hits and a miss or two, this meal was different: each item really was outstanding. The setting is cool as well - stools surrounding the kitchen so you can watch the action. Service was also very good. My kid declared it his "favorite meal ever." High praise, but deserved. It was certainly the most enjoyable meal we had in our five days in London.
I was lucky to get a seat without a wait on a Friday night.
Unfortunately it wasn't at the main bar where you can watch the chefs cook. It's a tiny place, with about 20 seats. I got the naan, spinach borani dip, cauliflower, and pata negra. The naan was fluffy and well cooked but had way too much salt on it, which kind of ruined everything. The dip was ok. The cauliflower had a slight kick to it and was served with some sort of hummus which was nice. If I could do it again I'd ask for no salt on the naan and skip the dip. The pata negra was definitely the star. Nicely cooked to a medium rare, well seasoned, and the sauce that comes with it helps balance out the fatty-ness. I only wish there was more sauce! Overall, a fun intimate place in a cute little corner of Neal's Yard with good food. I'd go again to try more dishes.
Amazing
I booked this restaurant due to the reviews and secondly itโs proximity to the theatre as we were seeing the two Harry Potter shows. The restaurant is intimate with seating around the bar and overlooking the cooking area. It reminds me of traditional Spanish tapas bars. The menu is not too overwhelming either, but caters for all dietary requirements The hot bread, hummus, cauliflower, salmon and fattoush were all full of flavours and utterly delicious It also plays excellent music, who doesnโt love Johnny Cash! I cannot recommend this place enough and I will certainly return
Exciting small dishes
Great small dishes and excellent glass(es) of house white wine suggestions, definitely coming back to check more.. friendly and efficient service.
What a find!
Iโll start with the food. The highlight dishes were falafel, Jerusalem Bagel, Pata Negra, and a Smokey/spicy aubergine dip (I canโt recall the name). All of these are delicious and Iโd definitely order again next time. Portions for small plates are generous and consequently we over ordered. Iโd recommend ordering a few at a time, they serve really quickly. So youโll not be waiting long for food. The staff were all really friendly and helpful, especially Charlotte, our server. Youโll get a lot of interaction & banter from the staff given the layout. Which leads me on to the set up. I loved how you sit around the bar which surrounds the kitchen, watching the cooks. If youโre looking for a place to have private conversations over dinner, itโs probably not for you. But Iโd say it would be a great place for a date, thereโd not be awkward silences. Some people may find the seats by the door too cold. They do try to keep the curtain closed for some shelter. But being an open kitchen, it does get warm in there, so I actually welcomed the breeze. It wasnโt a long dining experience, we were probably only there for one and half hours. But others came and went quicker. It does mean itโs a good option if youโre tight for time such as pre theatre. But you have to book, they turned away so many people! They only really had single seats free.

Freaking amazing, This was our last day in London and was looking for a great restaurant, this one had unbelievably high ratings in google and yelp, so i though, hey let give it a try. I am so glad i did, it took us a bit to find the place as it is a tiny place located down a equally tiny side street, once we got in the waitress was incredibly friendly and even though we did not have a reservation, she managed to find a place to seat us, We had the cauliflower jafa style - mouthwatering with just a tickle of spice, the naan - cooked to perfection - we ended up ordering 2 of them, the Jerusalem bagel - Lie a pretzel with alot of toasted seeds and severed with a cream sauce, the morrocan cigars - this is a monkfish dish, very tasty , the lamb armonim, the chicken shawarma & the pata negra - holy mother!!, the pata negra was over the top, it was one of the most unique dishes i have ever had, I am salivating remembering it now, a must have. then to finish off this amazing meal we had the hashcake, which of course was incredible. This is a must visit restaurant in London if you are craving Mediterranean food, or even if you have never had it before, this will be a great introduction to it.
The best naan bread!
Informed and helpful staff. A fabulous menu, which includes a wide variety of plant-based options. Great taste and impeccable service. The only flipside is that it's almost always full and nearly impossible without an advance reservation. But that's just a reflection on the quality and consistency of their plates. A phenomenal place to dine at for anyone visiting London.
The most flavorful food youโll find in London
Somewhat overpriced for such small portions of food, but everything I ate was amazing! Unquestionably some of the best food Iโve had in London.
Unique dining experience
Great and unique dining experience, all guests seated at a bar circling the kitchen. You get to see the cooks preparing your plates which is super fun. Menu is varied and everything we've tried was good. Service was good and efficient. Strongly recommend.
Incredible Flavors! Unforgettable Dining Experience!
My daughter and I were blown away by the food, the chefs and the staff at Barbary! It has been our most favorite and most unforgettable experience on our London foodie extravaganza. We loved the buzz and the energy of the bar seating. Everyone feels lucky to be there and excited to dig in. The smell of grilling spiced meats and fresh baked bread wafts through the air creating a sense of anticipation for your upcoming meal. Cocktail and wine requests were efficiently explained and provided, as was a very upbeat and thorough explanation of the menu. We settled on two starters โ the spinach borani and the hummus โalong with some naan. We cleaned the plates clean and even ordered more naan. We followed the starters with Chicken Shawarma and black salmon dukkah which were both unparalleled taste sensations. Complementing these main dishes we had an unforgettable cauliflower โJaffa style โ plate that we were both mesmerized by. Sad to see the flavor sensations come to an end we agreed we needed to try the dessert. We ordered the โhashcakeโ ( a pistachio tart) that rounded out the meal in fine form. We could not have had a better meal or experience. The chefs are not only incredibly talented, but also kind enough to take a second to talk to you and explain flavor profiles โor whatever other questions you happen to ask them about. Bravo to all the cooks, chefs, wait staff, bar tenders etc as everyone was perfectly pleasant and at the top of their game! Truly incredible labor of love , talent, and devotion to food and hospitality!
Exceptional
Exceptional food, cocktails and excellent service from Alex. Great set up to see the incredible work behind the scenes. We will definitely be back!

Whoa! I was in town for some work and heard this place had great food. I decided to take a 2 mile walk across london so was starving when I arrived. I was just a party of one so was hoping i could snag a seat at the bar since it was a fairly small restaurant. As you walk in you see the central cooking area and bar area and everyone sat around the bar or along the walls. I waited about 30 minutes and was able to snag a seat on the wall. Not the greatest view, but i had no reservations. The waiter came up and asked me how hungry was I. I said i am ready to eat and told him that i trust him to deliver me a great meal. The onslaught of food started and the food was just outstanding end to end. So highly executed. The standouts for me were the Cauliflower, Lamb and Pork dish. As you can see from my pictures i got a little of everything and Everything was delicious. Highly recommended.
The Barbary is a fantastical restaurant with all seats
The Barbary is a fantastical restaurant with all seats centered around the open kitchen. The food was amazing. Every thing is made to share, and small plates means you can order tons of different things to try. I went with two others and we decided not to ask any questions or google any of the dish names. We went in blind and ordered about 8-9 plates, including dessert and wine. Highly recommend. One of the best restaurants I've been to in recent memory.
What a great restaurant with North African inspired food.
Great vibe and service. Place gets rocking as they have 2-3 seatings a night. All the appetizers, dips with the naan and bagel were amazing. Lamb grilled bites were fantastic. Chicken shawarma was super tender and the pata negra was fantastic in the sauce. Finished with knefeh dessert.
Amazing
One of the best meals Iโve had in a long time. Every dish was stand-out. Brilliant ingredients, skilfully prepared, and served by excellent staff. The layout is not your traditional restaurant and isnโt somewhere Iโd personally go with a big group because the U shaped bar/table lends itself to something more intimate. Although I love how you can see the food being prepared. A nice touch on our visit was the staff serving all the customers a little glass of punch and toasting. Made it really fun!
After being rejected by a wine bar near by, we stumbled
After being rejected by a wine bar near by, we stumbled upon this colloquial hole-in-the-wall resturaunt. But after an absolutely delectable dinner, I'd say this is a must for anyone in Soho. The Port Sa'id with poached octopus and a garlic herb oil finish literally melts in your mouth. Their salads are exquisite -- the Essaraourian tomato salad on a bed of tahini is to die for. And don't forget about your slow cooked lamb mechoi: marinated, braised, then cooked in a 130C oven for 12 hours. The chicken and apricot tagine was simply the most succulent bite of chicken this side of the pond. Well I'll stop my rambling now. Get your --insert colloquial word for booty-- to this small establishment as quickly as possible.
Simply a must-go and one of the better meals I've had in
Simply a must-go and one of the better meals I've had in London / Europe. I made reservations a week before as this was recommended to me through Yelp, and to be frank I've never really seen such a highly rated restaurant in the area before on this platform, so I figured I should try it at least once ... luckily we were able to snag a 5pm spot since almost every other time past the opening was taken already! Seating is quite limited at around 20-30 or so, with coat racks under the counter which was helpful. Our waiter was exceptionally helpful and attentive. He recommended bread, 2-3 dips, and one dish from each of the rest of the sections (meats, 'earth', etc.) We went with the naan and the ikra and za'aluk (I think?!) dips, the chicken shawarma, the lamb, and the salmon. The salmon and glaze was perfect, the chicken was unbelievably tender, and the lamb was amazing to finish off the meal. Too full for dessert, but I wish we did try it! A fantastic dinner even if it was earlier than we were used to .. but even more reason to check out a musical afterwards or stroll around and see the holiday decorations :)

Set in the extremely charming Neal's Yard, the Barbary is a gorgeous concept and serves up some super tasty food to boot. I loved the dips, the cigar was divine, and the meats were all exquisite-- the only thing I could possibly quibble with was the octopus, as it was a little too toothsome. But everything else was marvelous. Big shoutout to the staff, too, whose warmth was perfect on a chilly night, and big respect to the chefs. Being a line cook is a stressful job, but I can only imagine it's even harder when your kitchen is right out in the center of everything and you have to keep a stiff upper lip, no matter what's happening. Everyone there seems like a consummate professional. Excellent experience.Absolutely go have dinner at the barbary. They are the real deal.

Absolutely solid five stars, the food at the Barbary was one of the best we had in London. Definitely make reservations, it's a tiny restaurant of less than 30 seats and I wouldn't say it's suitable for young kids as most seats are at a large central bar. Originally I was a bit skeptical of this restaurant but after two locals highly recommended it, decided to check it out. It's in the fun and atmospheric Seven Dials area which is nice to visit too. Flavors leaned towards that of Israel / Morroco with a London twist. Two of us ordered:* Naan and Tirshi: note that this is two separate dishes. The naan was light and fluffy, reminded me of the pillowy pita at Zahav in Philly but not as transcendent. However it's mainly to pick up the Tirshi, which sounds like a boring pumpkin sauce but was an explosion of flavors! This was recommended by our waitress and I can see why. 5/5* Pata Negra: smoky meaty tender pork neck. Surprisingly tender but so full of flavor. 4/5* Cauliflower Jaffa: cauliflower has become so trendy everywhere but the dish at the Barbary was a solid rendition with smoky char and a lovely creamy sauce. Probably would have scored higher if we didn't have an outstanding cauliflower dish two days earlier. Still very tasty. 4/5* Hamra Octopus: again, perfect grill for super tender and smoky flavor. 4.5/5* Hashcake: we didn't know what this was but it was recommended by the waitress so we gave it a try. It's probably closest to a pistachio pie with the perfect touch of sweetness. 4.5/5Overall we loved our meal at the Barbary and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others. Unfortunately they ran out of the Jerusalem Bagel that day so we have a great reason to go again!
